In Ruined Music, the failures that come with living are redeemed by the lyricism, tenderness, and humor of their telling. Valentina Gnup says in one poem, "I want the rain to fall like petals / every morning across the thirsty world." The poems in this book seem to do just that.

Editorial Reviews

Review

In Ruined Music the poet embraces the ruining with redemptive tenderness, fury, and humor. Divided into the four phases of any day-morning, afternoon, evening, midnight-these poems are alchemic, making of the ruin (relationships gone sour, lousy jobs, abusive religion, the burden of poverty) a testament to survival. These poems do what Nobel laureate Tomas Tranströmer said was his poetic aim: to be present, to use reality, to experience it, and to make something of it.

--Brad Davis, author of Trespassing on the Mount of Olives

Poet Valentina Gnup summons a full chord made from longing, grace, and awe. In this astonishing collection, we experience wonder and acceptance, desire and deliverance as if in real time; these poems breathe and dance. Deftly, Gnup sways with us through a songbook of the heart, hitting every note, the beautiful and the ruined. You will want to keep dancing, you will reach out for her long after.

- Brendan Constantine, author of Dementia, My Darling

There is music in these pages. The poems of Valentina Gnup sing songs of longing, loss, heartbreak and death. They are the lyrical expression of a poet who has lived deeply, and who has the talent to capture life in words that startle and delight.

With passion, compassion, humility and humor, Gnup takes her individual experiences and transforms them into universal truths that will connect with everyone, serving to remind each and every one of us that we are not alone.

Jane Hirshfield wrote that “Poetry’s work is the clarification and magnification of being.” I can think of no better description for the poems in Ruined Music, a collection I will be rereading for years to come.

Ruined Music is a beautifully nuanced work of art. Valentina Gnup confronts mortality, love and the aching poverty of the world in language that hums with sadness, grace, resignation and wisdom. The theme weaves in and out of every poem, the notion that many things in life are ruined (or will become ruined) by time, politics, greed, and suffering, but they are still worth reaching for in spite of the fallen world they inhabit. This is the mature work of a mature and gifted poet who more than deserves to be read.

This book is my new companion. I’ll pick it up throughout the day, read a poem or two, then find myself having to pause, exhale, and feel the enormity of what just happened on the page.

Valentina Gnup's extraordinary craftsmanship pulls me in with everyday images, then knocks me over with some devastating truth. This collection is at once wrenching, refreshing, relatable, and restorative. I just want to keep reading...

In Ruined Music, Valentina Gnup shares her unique experiences, and through them, uncovers the universal truths amongst us all. For the poet, non poet, and even the reluctant to read poetry person, this book is awaiting your discovery. Read it, and you will be moved. Of that, I am certain.

Clever, creative, and thought provoking.

Valentina Gnup’s title is a bit deceptive, Ruined Music. Music, yes, a whole book full, but ruined, hardly. Her poems are accessible, which means you always know what she’s talking about, which is nothing less than what it means to be an adult navigating these harrowing times. She does this masterfully in clear, beautifully crafted language, and with piercing insights, laced with humor. It’s all here: husbands, children, marriages, divorces, dating debacles, pathos, and resolutions. Ruined Music serves as a manual for understanding, surviving, and succeeding in the American 21st century, and it’s as good as any poetry being written anywhere.

These poems are so beautiful - strong and powerful yet fragile and vulnerable at the same time. Val captures the magic in quiet moments as well as the heartbreak and pain of the human experience. I connected with so many of the images and feelings expressed in her poems. I am sure I will return to this book again and again!

The poems in Ruined Music are resonant, open-hearted, and evocative. They speak of life’s heartaches and hard-won triumphs, with astonishing empathy.
