The Business Case is developed during the planning and evaluation phase of a Project/Program.

A business case captures the logic for commencing a Project or Project/Program . The reason for a business case is that, whenever resources such as money or effort are to be expended, this should be done in the support of a specific business requirement or initiative.

A credible business case sufficiently captures both the quantifiable and unquantifiable features of a proposed Project/Program. Once approved the Business Case represents the agreed justification for work effort on a Project/Program. It summarises the results of the evaluation, and defines the agreement between the Project/Program Manager and the Sponsor for the Project/Program.

Consequently, it also sets the delivery baseline for the Project/Program from strategic alignment through to delivered benefits.

A well-structured and well-justified business case is a foundation of effective project and program management. It provides the necessary rationale, alignment with strategic goals, and justification for resource allocation. It serves as a guiding document, ensuring that the work undertaken remains in line with the organisation's objectives and delivers the intended benefits.

Business cases are used to ensure that:
  • the proposed investment has value and importance to the business
  • the project/program will be correctly managed and governed
  • the business has the capacity to deliver the benefits identified
  • the business's own resources are working on the most relevant and valued opportunities
  • projects/programs with interrelated dependencies are carried out in the best possible sequence.
