This is a wonderful book for those wanting to work with complex trauma, parts and dissociation. I am a schema therapist and EMDR therapist and have found myself blocked with IFS due to the position the model takes on phased-based treatment and medication. In this book Joanne integrates and accepts the necessity for phased-based treatment and medication in clients with complex trauma and dissociative disorders. But what is the greatest thing about this work, is Joanne's use of masterful phrasing and techniques to work with all sorts of issues related to parts work. I have read a number of books and trained with world renowned experts and Joanne's way of phrasing and approaching parts/ dissociation is outstanding and the most accessible and easy to follow and apply. I have already been using Joanne's ideas and phrasing with immediate impact in my therapy room. Thank you Joanne for sharing your wisdom.

As a therapist with more than 30 years experience working with individuals experiencing severe and persistent mental illness and trauma, I can honestly the information presented in this book on IFS trauma work has truly increased my compassion and understanding of how trauma affects every area of our lives. I have assigned this book as part of our department’s training protocol and have been delighted to be able to listen to a novice clinician describe the strides her client is making now that she has been able to utilize Joanne’s IFS language in her sessions. Truly amazing work with direct practical easy to understand interventions. Thank you Joanne!

Joanne Twombly's ability to convey the complexities involved in this kind of treatment makes her book a real gem. Her introduction to IFS concepts and language, and her ability to convey the integration of IFS with other aspects of complex trauma treatment, are real strengths of this book. Her voice a a writer and clinician is concise and clear: The language she uses to explain dissociation, adaptation to trauma, and treatment is straightforward and understandable, and non-pathologizing. She manages to describe extremely complex topics and processes in a way that makes them seem simple - the mark of a gifted clinician and teacher! This is a book to read and then come back to again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important reading for those who utilize IFS Therapy when working with trauma

Far too many therapists and coaches suggest that they know how to work with complex trauma clients without understanding dissociation. This book is an important bridge between IFS Therapy which is a very popular therapy and understanding trauma which fills in the substantial gap between the IFS world and the trauma and dissociation world.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was OK.

It was an OK read. I really liked and appreciated the foreword about gender/ race etc as its not often to find books on trauma/ therapy that are inclusive. It was quite a simple read in alot of aspects but also found some of the writing about parts/ the self confusing.
