#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER · INSTANT INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER
From Dr. Nicole LePera, creator of "the holistic psychologist"—the online phenomenon with more than two million Instagram followers—comes a revolutionary approach to healing that harnesses the power of the self to produce lasting change.
As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Nicole LePera often found herself frustrated by the limitations of traditional psychotherapy. Wanting more for her patients—and for herself—she began a journey to develop a united philosophy of mental, physical and spiritual wellness that equips people with the interdisciplinary tools necessary to heal themselves. After experiencing the life-changing results herself, she began to share what she’d learned with others—and soon “The Holistic Psychologist” was born.
Now, Dr. LePera is ready to share her much-requested protocol with the world. In How to Do the Work, she offers both a manifesto for SelfHealing as well as an essential guide to creating a more vibrant, authentic, and joyful life. Drawing on the latest research from a diversity of scientific fields and healing modalities, Dr. LePera helps us recognize how adverse experiences and trauma in childhood live with us, resulting in whole body dysfunction—activating harmful stress responses that keep us stuck engaging in patterns of codependency, emotional immaturity, and trauma bonds. Unless addressed, these self-sabotaging behaviors can quickly become cyclical, leaving people feeling unhappy, unfulfilled, and unwell.
In How to Do the Work, Dr. LePera offers readers the support and tools that will allow them to break free from destructive behaviors to reclaim and recreate their lives. Nothing short of a paradigm shift, this is a celebration of empowerment that will forever change the way we approach mental wellness and self-care.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2024This was an easy read, with a ton of great information that I hadn't read in other books of this type. Has scientifically backed date and information as well as ways to use that information to make changes in your life. One of my favorite books this far! I can't recommend this book enough! You will not be disappointed!!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2024I found this author on YouTube and had to buy her first book. It comes with a corresponding workbook, but you don't need it. Just buy a notebook and keep it handy. She writes in a very easy to understand style that's logical and follows a well thought out series of progression from chapter to chapter. It's not the kind of book you "read through." Instead, if you need healing from past trauma and repeating negative thoughts and emotions, this book includes the steps you need to apply to start the healing. I cannot recommend this book enough as it has helped me work through my own past issues.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025I am at a point in life I want to find myself. I don’t want to be my past trauma. This book is amazing at showing the way to find your inner child and control emotions.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024It is a age turner and learned so much from reading this book about myself. It provided great tools to heal.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2024This book is so good!!! There were a lot of things I was on the cusp of understanding until I read it and I was able to connect a lot of the dots.
I can’t recommend this enough for someone who is looking for steps to take to self healing.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021I started reading my copy from it’s release date and purposely took my time finishing it. Three months later, after putting lessons in practice, doing journal prompts, and assessing myself afterwards, I can honestly say this book has helped me heal from my own personal trauma and feel more authenticity for myself.
However, this book is not for everyone, and the author makes you well aware of that fact early on. To put it bluntly, this is not an easy read. I found the content to be very technical and the terminology to be hard to comprehend. (This will definitely act as a reference book as I learn more moving forward.) Additionally, the stories and questions in here will prompt you to think of things you’ve set aside in your subconscious because they were too uncomfortable or painful to remember, and it asks you to take responsibility in your own healing. The title says it all and if you’re not prepared to “do the work,” this isn’t your book. It’s a commitment to yourself and, because the work is never done, it’s a continuous practice you learn to do.
My only gripe with this book was the very brief mentions of BIPOC and how this particular paradigm shift in mental health could affect this community. Don’t get me wrong, she touches on this topic a few times within the book, but it would be interesting to learn more — perhaps from a more qualified (BIPOC) perspective within the field.
Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable read and it gave me plenty to think about.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2024Dr. LePera’s book has helped me tremendously. She opens your eyes to self-defeating behaviors by sharing her own personal transformational story. She gives you all the tips you meed to do the work. This is by far the best self-help book I have ever read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2024First, this book was such an easy read. That’s essential and rare when it comes to books like this.
It really helped me sit and think about how my upbringing has influenced my relationships (and lack of). I’m excited to take the tools and work on myself!

5.0 out of 5 stars muy buena lectura
Realmente es un libro muy interesante y muy profesional que da consejos muy válidos. Además la autora menciona pocos libros, pero realmente son libros en mi opinión de lo mejor que hay en la materia.
