This book is a cold, hard dose of reality. And I needed it. My 8 (almost 9) year old and I read this right before Juneteenth. We love books/streaming shows where you get to chose the ending. The author pulls no punches in this book. This book is a good reminder about the harsh realities of reconstruction. Though Juneteenth is supposed to be a modern celebration, we can't forget the struggles that still continued after the enslaved were emancipated.

We really enjoyed the interactive approach. It helped the kids to really see the unfair and costly consequences of the choices the enslaved were stuck with.

I read this book as a summer Boot Camp reading course. I absolutely love the interaction I was able to have with my students from a far. Having the different perspectives in the different options really puts in hindsight of what it means to celebrate Juneteenth

Was an easy read with my 7 and 11 year old sons, helped them understand more about what life was like for their ancestors back then. Great book to read and pass along.

"It’s a day not just for African-Americans, but for all Americans who believe in justice and equality."

This book starts and ends with basic history, and the information you "expect", but in the middle it transforms into a storybook reminiscent of the choose your own adventure books of the 1980s where you choose one of two options at the turning point of events, and find out what happens next for the characters.

This was a fun way to learn about Juneteenth. Each of us took a turn trying to navigate the stories and then shared how we did. Educational without being onerous or preach-y. Loved the interactive aspect...which worked much better than I expected in ebook format.

Great book. My 9 year old was obsessed with it and read the entire book to me and our family in less than a day. She had us go through each story journey/option and it was a great learning tool. I highly recommend it.
