Review

"Kate L. Mary's World of Blood is a dystopian story broken into two distinct parts. Part one begins with a missionary being killed by the Andaman tribe. When India refused to retrieve his body, the United States sent a special operative troop. While they were digging up his body, a dozen natives attacked the soldiers. Andra noticed one soldier looked ill when he appeared on a talk show. Reports of a deadly virus outbreak in India follow a news report that several soldiers have succumbed to a mysterious illness. The second part occurs several months later when they have no power, water, or internet. Olivia becomes hateful when her mother refuses to leave the house to get her best friend. Andra and Sean risk going out to a pharmacy for medication but what they find is far worse than they could ever imagine.

Kate L. Mary uses Andra's point of view as a dystopian author to reveal the events that led to preparing for the pandemic. Andra's writing was a strength and a weakness when she watched social media posts. The scientific approach to several events caused several unpredictable twists. I felt chills with the feeling of eeriness generated by the atmosphere's vivid details. I agreed with Andra's suspicions about Quinn's presence after he was evasive when answering questions. The behavior of each character was understandable and realistic. For example, Olivia was a moody teenager who lashed out because she couldn't control her life during lockdown. I couldn't pry myself from the book when I read about the effects of the virus. World of Blood's suspense builds in intensity from start to finish and the cliffhanger ending leaves a variety of scenarios for the sequel that I am eager to read." -

Brutal dystopian societies rife with apocalyptic doom have always been author Andra's specialty. She has for a knack for the doomsday special. However, when fiction meets reality, nothing could ever prepare Andra for the new world surrounding her. She curses the day modern man ever stepped foot on the Andaman Islands and wrought havoc in the world around them. But she will stop at nothing to survive and to ensure her daughter's survival as well. In real life, that may be more difficult than in the novels she writes, especially with violent creatures lurking about.

From the very beginning, Kate L. Mary creates an intense, thrilling, and mysterious world that incites chills of terror. The first two chapters of the book feel as though they belong in an entirely different novel, but they offer an incredible look into the origins of the apocalypse. As the story shifts to focus on Andra and her family, however, the characters from the first chapters remain pivotal as Andra learns of the U.S. Mission to the Andaman Islands. Andra watches as their behavior sparks concern. All the characters interact flawlessly together, and their character development is written to fit perfectly into the story's apocalyptic world. There is even slight humor in the "end-of-times romance" that Andra mocks; however, this small dose of humor is nothing in comparison to the thrills and fear of the story. Every turn of the page will have readers peeking around the corners of their house at night in search of monstrous creatures! - Sadie Wilson for InD'tale Magazine

I'm a mom of four, Air Force wife, and author of adult and young adult dystopian, post-apocalyptic, and science fiction. I love intense world building and character driven stories that feature strong female leads - as well as a side of romance - and any end of the world scenario. Zombies, aliens, a distant future where people have no clue how the world ended in the first place, you name it, I will create a story there!

Having lived in a lot of different places after more than a decade as an Air Force wife, I love setting my books in cities I've actually lived in to give them authenticity. I've resided in: Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, California, and Oklahoma but am currently back in my home state of Ohio where I live with my husband, four kids, two dogs, and three cats.

When I'm not writing, you can find me by my pool (in the summer), getting lost in some binge-worthy show or at a play with my husband, patronizing one of the great restaurants in my small town of Troy, Ohio with my family, or traveling. I want to see everything and make a point of visiting a new place every year!

Some of my favorite books are The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, The Host, and The Stand. My favorite movies are Aliens, Jaws, Signs, Say Anything, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Greatest Showman.

It’s a different twist on a popular post apocalyptic theme. It grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. All of Kate l Mary’s books do this, so I’m not surprised. We have 5” of snow coming and I’m going to be by my fireplace finishing this series.
  • Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2024
Kate Mary is clearly a talented writer. Her first chapter especially was so excellently written that I think she might have the upside to write Literature with a capital L.

Unfortunately, however, there are a variety of issues that keep this book from shining as bright as it could have.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

Showing character growth is important and that often means taking flawed characters and "fixing" them. However, the characters often did stuff that was so dumb it rattles your suspension of disbelief.

For example, a special ops soldier in an opening chapter ends up facing off with some enemies and literally throws his gun down to fight a bunch of threats like it's a drunken bar fight. It was just absolutely but accidentally hilarious and silly. No special ops soldier is doing that.

Later, India has collapsed as a mysterious illness swept through the country with a near 100 percent fatality rate. India, the most populous country in the world, is literally wiped off the face for the Earth and suddenly people all across the USA are getting the illness as well. But even so, some of the characters are trying to argue that it's not a big deal and everyone is overreacting, blah blah. Sorry, no, there is absolutely no sane person who is going to think there's an overreaction to look at a fatality rate approaching 100% and that has already wiped out India, and then think "you know this probably isn't a big deal." This is never going to happen.

Outside of these issues, the writer also describes some things in way, way too much detail. Many chapters could and should be trimmed down by 25 percent or more.

The author also has a tendency to restate the same thing over and over. The MC, for example, is a dystopian fiction writer (love the meta), which means she has a decent idea of what is coming and what they need to do. Good stuff, except the MC has to remind us page after page after page that she's a dystopian fiction author. You only need to mention that a few times, however, and from there on out you should rely on showing rather than telling. But nope, we have to be reminded like every other paragraph that the MC is a dystopian fiction writer, thus giving her a unique perspective.

There are some other issues as well. For example, we hear several times about the President of India leading India. Problem is, it's the Prime Minister of India that calls the shots and the President is more of a figurehead. This is easily discovered with a quick search.

Reading the above, you might think that I'm not a fan of the author or the book. That's not the case, but with editing and some adjustments I genuinely this book would be able to stand up against well-regarded novels from well-regarded authors publishing through traditional publishers. The talent is there but tweaks are needed.

What a start to the series. The opening and set up was easy to follow but not entirely predictable. Thrilling drama, dynamic characters and relationships, immersive world building. It felt like I stepped right into this new world with Andra. Could not put it down, finished the first 3 books in 24 hours.

This is my first book by Kate L. Mary & it was extraordinary & unique & I couldn't put it down. It popped up as a recommendation after I completed another post-apocalyptic book. I'll be honest I was skeptical because I've read so many & they can run along the same storyline, but this one did not.

World of Blood was completely unique with the completely isolated island cutoff from all outsiders where the extremely violent & territorial Andamanian tribe lives. The bits of history that are known of them are slim but terrifying. They kill anyone who dares to come near their island with bows & spears. The legends surrounding them couldn't be true, or could they?

A young missionary from Oklahoma finds out how true they are, as does the secret group of American soldiers who illegally go onto the island to retrieve the young missionary body. Things go horrifically bad quickly. We get to experience every nail-biting moment through one woman & her family's eyes. It's a crazy ride & I loved it. Best post-apocalyptic book I've read in a long time & I read a lot.

Gotta go now. I have the next book to read :)

It was a little slow going for me but it finally took off. It wasn't the best of her World Series but it was good. I love me a good zombie book but I'm trying to get Into other types of apocalypse es? If that's a word. These things will take time for me to get use to but I'm into the story now. I need to see where they'll go and if they'll meet up with others. So far its got me interested.

Slow start which needs a lot of editing of the first 1/3 ish. Fairly well developed characters with some odd glitches that were hard to believe. When a character says the monsters have nothing in common with zombies, they sounded stupid or short sighted given that both come on after a virus, both seek to eat the living, and both die from a head shot.

I love the concept of the antagonist being a post-apocalyptic author, especially a female one, to match the real one. The only drawback was that it could have used another grammatical review. There were just a few, but enough to be noticeable. No matter, though, I'm on my way to get book 2: World of Rot.

I loved reading the real life inspiration for this story and actually made me love it and enjoy it more. The various real world references to shows was appreciated as I love most of those mentioned. I vaguely remember watching Tremors a very long time ago but am definitely going to give it a rewatch. Definitely one of my favorite authors. I did wonder about the lack of reference to the Covid 19 pandemic so really appreciate the explanation. Now on to the next book with bated breath.

I have read so many books in the horror genre that sometimes it starts to feel like the same stories are retold with a few minor tweaks.
Not this one, though! It's a unique premise combined with a sprinkle of pop culture that weaves a story that is interesting and unexpected.
I love that the main character is a fan of apocalyptic fiction, and I enjoyed relating to her diverse but mostly functional blended family.
The beginning days feel very covid-like and mention strange social practices that occurred during this era, which helped to make this storyline extremely relatable to the reader.
I love the scary creatures, and I am invested in knowing what is next for these characters.
    I highly recommend 👌

This book is a page turner & it was hard to put down. It has a good twist on zombpoc, good character development and a good storyline. Also it is nice to read an apocalyptic book where the main characters names are a bit more unique than Jennifer or John (no offense to the Jennifer's and John's of the world).

This is my original review but I've changed the title of the review.

First book in what looks like is going to be a great new series.

Kate L Mary has come up with another great take on the apocalypse genre.

I really enjoyed the book & am looking forward to the next in series, just wish we didn't have to wait so long between books.

Why not 5 stars if I enjoyed it so much, well the author doesn't seem to employ an editor but relies on her friends to point out typos etc. Unfortunately I've found that in each of her books a few get missed. So she's never going to get 5 stars off me. Another little niggle was Andra's hyper focus on saving her daughter & not seeming to care the same about the twins. Surely if they were such a happily blended family she would care for her ex's twins the same way his wife seems to care for her daughter.
