An unexpected, mysterious discovery in Cambodia leads Emily Mclean on a journey through the country’s painful history and toward personal redemption.

After a horrific accident shatters her world and leaves her an amputee, American attorney Emily Mclean moves to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to work with landmine survivors. She hopes to reinvent herself in this new land, leaving behind her sense of culpability in the death of her husband and the loss of her unborn child.

While visiting the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide, Emily discovers that she shares an eerie resemblance to a portrait of a former prison inmate, Milijana Petrova, a Yugoslavian communist revolutionary who, in the 1970s, became fatally enmeshed with the brutal Khmer Rouge regime. Emily is not the only one who notices the astonishing similarity—her Cambodian driver insists she is the ghost of Milijana, come back to complete a mysterious task.

This unexpected discovery consumes Emily, who starts desperately searching for answers about Milijana in historical documents from Cambodia’s devastating civil war. As she begins to uncover more clues about Milijana’s life—from the horrible mistakes she made to the terrible price she paid—further similarities between the two women start to emerge, and their stories become intertwined. What happens when life is turned upside down and the boundaries between past and present, life and death, are blurred? Can Emily’s discoveries help her to finally emerge from the pain of her own past, or will Milijana’s tragic end foretell her own?

This was a riveting book for me. I took it on the airplane and the time went by quickly. I love the way this book is structured, weaving the stories of the two women, Emily and Milijana. The dates and titles anchored me. All of the characters were compelling and well developed. I learned about Cambodia, a country I have been intrigued by but never really knew anything about. The plot is entirely convincing perhaps due to the authors own experiences there. I liked the mixture of languages which made it believable as well. The strength of both protagonists was evident throughout the book making both characters likeable. The novel has a spiritual presence as well. I found the communication with the dead and past experiences totally authentic. Everything contrasted well with Western rational logic.

After completing this book, I had to sit with its mental images and emotions for a while before writing this review. Reading it is an invitation to witness. This novel takes up the Khmer Rouge’s brutal torture and genocide of thousands of Cambodians during its civil war. Written as a dual timeline, the story moves between present-day Emily, an American human rights worker, and Milijana, a prisoner of the Khmer Rouge in the late 1970s. The events carry the authenticity of the author drawing from her own experience documenting genocide records and interviewing insurgents in the nineties. The result is a brilliant, multi-layered novel. It explores the tension between Western and Khmer cultures; otherworldly ghosts and journalistic facts; and the idealism of Communism’s nirvana promise and its degradation in the hands of tyrants. The writing is sensuous: We smell the rank odor of the torture cells and feel the clamminess of heavy humidity. And through it all, Emily’s pursuit of truth, which is caught up with Milijana’s gradually unraveled story, drove me to keep the pages turning. I love how the author’s love for this country and its people shine through the pages. I love her sensitivity and honesty in writing about fragile, horrific events. But most of all, I love the hope that the more books such as these are written, the closer humankind can get to ending horrific acts. Repost of review on goodreads.

Energy, emotions and redemption mixed in one work of art always produces flood of feelings. When these emotions are mixed with, to me familiar locations (Cambodia, Montana, Seattle, Yugoslavia) and excellent writing, then this artistic mix creates the discovery into my own inner self. Lya’s impressive character-building and understanding of history where these events had happened makes this novel not just a page-turner but also a work of art that will forever remain in my heart my mind and on my book shelf.

I read a lot of murder mystery books and did not know what to expect as I started reading this book. I was impressed with the flow of words and found it very educational. I knew little about Cambodia even though I spent many hours flying over and around refueling fighters during the Vietnam War. I want to learn more about Cambodia's current situation.

Lya made the characters come alive and seem so real. In the beginning I struggled keeping track of all the characters from the two different time periods. Bottom line - very well written. I hope there is a sequel.

I just finished reading "The Foreigner's Confession" and enjoyed it from start to finish. The author was able to weave together the stories of two women in a compelling way and I eagerly turned the page to find out what would happen next. Written as historical fiction, it gives the reader insight into the
atrocities and heartbreak of Cambodia during it's war torn years yet ultimately, it's a story about the power of healing and love. I highly recommend it!

I am at a loss trying to decide if I like The Foreigner's Confession more than The Worth of a Ruby. Both are amazing works of art. Both spoke to me in the most intimate way. Both made me feel great. Your ability to expose women's strength and frailty at the same time is astonishing. All I can say to Lyla is: WRITE MORE.

I loved the way Lya led us through an amazing historical moment leaving you to search to see if one of her characters were indeed real. Knowing she had actually microfilmed documents for the Tuol Sleng Museum of Genocide in Cambodia gave the reader an intriguing glimpse of her writing. Well done!

I totally enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who likes historical fiction, great dialog, vivid sense of place, compelling story line and, for me, exotic locations. It was hard to put down and I was sorry when it ended.
