- Reviewed in the United States on November 2, 2018Noteworthy hunts exist afterwards in the stories we tell. I was raised on hunting stories, from the stories that my great grandfather told me about the South Dakota plains, to the stories my grandfather told me about Northern California, to the stories that my father told me about the high Sierras. All hunters tell, and even better, retell stories. The best of these stories are retold over and over again and become myths. By myth I don’t mean that they are untrue, but instead I mean that they become something more than a collection of facts and impressions. These myths define us as hunters and tell truths through narrative. These stories enrich, instruct, and entertain us. All of the great hunting and fishing writing is mythological in this sense. They are not simply instructional. They do instruct but they also tell us how and who to be in the field. Andrew Wayment has added to the body of this mythology with his honest (he misses a lot even on the first outing with his new side by side!), descriptive, and exciting book.
Wayment takes us along on his grouse hunts in Idaho and tells us about many of his misses, and, thankfully, many of his hits! But more importantly as a writer he shows more than he tells. We get to know his dogs and feel the urgency when one is on point. He gives us the names of his coverts and how they earned their names. Most of the hunting Wayment describes is on public land that he’s burned the boot leather to find and that gives him the right to name them, and maybe even feel a bit possessive of these coverts, but don’t worry, he shares the coverts with us and with the many friends he takes along with him.
Wayment is a family man and most importantly a husband. His wife figures prominently in her generosity and like most of us he has to work to balance being in the field with being home with his family. Two of the best stories in the book involve his wife coming out to rescue him. Once, when he’s stuck (most of us have gotten ourselves stuck but not all of us on our wife’s birthday) and another time when he almost dies of anaphylactic shock after being stung multiple times by hornets—that time Wayment’s wife likely saved his life.
The best compliment one can give to a hunting story, any story really, is to say that it never gets old in the retelling, or, the re-reading, that in fact it grows and takes on a life of its own that becomes a part of all us who spend as much time as we can following after dogs with shotguns. Idaho Ruffed Grouse Hunting is a collection of stories that has earned its place in this pantheon.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2024Excellent book and great reading
- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2022I moved to Idaho from the Great Plains recently and began furred grouse hunting last fall. I should have read this book in the fall rather than the winter so I could get a head start into, what I didnt know at the time of purchase of thos book, my life-long grouse hunting grand adventure. I fell in love with the sport of grouse hunting and passion I feel while in the places they call home, and after my season ended, I read this book. This book had me laughing, smiling, smacking myself while thinking, 'why didn't I hunt more earlier in the season!!', crying from the pure truthfulness of it all. This book hugged my soul, and as a new grouse hunter to Idaho (who was a die hard duck hunter in North Dakota), I feel I've been handed a key to a whole new world that the author has truly captured so well. My feelings while hunting ruffed grouse are simply appreciation for these birds, their habitat, the love for my dog, and they have all been raised greatly after reading this book. I read it in one sitting, mesmerized by the parallels between the author's stories and my own, and I can't wait to get back to the grouse woods this fall.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2021I just finished reading Andy’s book and it has made me more excited to be in the grouse woods than I have been in a long time. He has a way of making the stories come alive and reminding you of all those great moments in the grouse woods.
I appreciate that the author is human. This is not a book about never missing a shot or never having an empty trip. Andy readily accepts missed birds and empty bags as part of the journey, part of the challenge, and part of of the allure of grouse hunting. It is easy to see his passion in the birds, the woods, the dogs, and every other part of the experience.
I know Andy didn’t set out to write a how-to, but there is great info on tactics and habitat if you read between the lines. If nothing else, you’ll come away reliving old adventures and longing for new ones. What more can you ask?
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2018My wife and I recently moved from Maryland to Colorado and I was looking for something of a primer to Western grouse hunting that I'd heard so much about from my military buddies. I was scrolling through Instagram one day when I saw that Andy, whom I'd already followed had authored just the book for me! While not an instructional tome, he linked many other classical grouse authors as well as told his story. A great mix of the solitary hunter examining new coverts and the social hunter bringing both family and friends to the grouse woods Andy tells his story in quick digestible chunks.
He's well read, and I'm not sure I know any lawyer that isn't, I found myself taking notes of other books to read after I'd finished his. Highly recommend adding this to your upland hunting library.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2023Great read for passionate upland hunters whether they are in the Idaho area or not. Ruffed grouse, in particular, seem to carry across the country in lore and reverence.
I enjoyed reading about the dogs, the “coverts”, and the days afield. Readers will enjoy Wayment’s honesty and ability to tell these stories in a universal way that makes them incredibly relatable across geography and species. I enjoyed the artwork throughout the book and I have some new prints to acquire. 5 stars.
