This book is a good resource to have for anyone interested in apologetics. There is a massive amount of information contained in this book that is not only based on evidentialism but also presuppositional apologetics as well. Many authors top thinkers are referenced in this book which also makes it helpful.
I would recommend this book to anyone dealing regularly with college students and even the general public who are Biblically illiterate. It will help answer some of the fundamental questions asked today.
That being said, I believe this book has some major flaws common to Christian academia.
1) It assumes that the major problem facing the sinner is information based.
The sinner is in rebellion against God not because of a lack of information but because of selfishness. His problem is moral and not theological or evidential in nature (Romans 1:20, 3:23, 6:23). Presuppositional apologetics and other philosophical approaches are more effective when dealing with the skeptic.
2) It assumes that the Bible is reliable because of manuscript evidence and not due to a special preservation
The Bible, like the God of the Bible, must be accepted by faith. Faith does not indicate a lack of evidence, but is grounded primarily on God's promises rather than man's ability to explain something. God promised to preserve His word and that His word is perfect (Psalm 12:6-7, 119:128; 2 Tim 3:16-17 etc.) I believe that Mr. McDowell, in attempting to provide manuscript evidence, actually does more damage to the reliability of the Bible by attempting to validate corrupt manuscripts that underly modern Bible versions. The Textus-Receptus is God's preserved Word throughout history and not the latest revision of Biblical texts peddled in the marketplace today.
Claiming the Bible is "almost perfect" is pointless because with a flawed Bible a person can only relate to the God of the Bible in a flawed manner. The Bible is either absolute or obsolete. This is why it is critical to understand the truth of God's Word being preserved through time in the TR/Masoretic texts.
Six months after the memorial gift to a Presbyterian church library of a large Presbyterian church, my gift to my friend with the acknowledgement of how much he had meant to me in the few years I had known him, had not been acknowledged. Upon contacting the church library, they indicated they had not received the book and therefore had not inventoried it in the church library. Back tracking, Amazon dot Com's records should the book had been shipped and received by the church. What happened to the book?
I never received a proper answer to that question. I have some ideas about the matter. THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT is not heresy and should not cause a schism in any believing individual or denomination. Shortly after my inquiry, the acknowledgements came. I hope the individual or individuals who withheld this wonderful reference from the church library were blessed by their readings by the Holy Spirit, strengthening their faith, in those areas where there are doubts, and if the reader was a none believer, hopefully his or her questions have been answered and that now they are a part of the body of Christ.
