- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2023The chapter about red light leaders and their lack of awareness, apology, or change behavior is chillingly accurate. I also appreciated the chapter on narcissism. It was spot on even if it’s a little lenient towards these character-disordered individuals. This helped me process psychological abuse from a church leader as well as the spiritual abuse that resulted from the complacency of other church leaders. It will also help my husband and I as we seek out a healthy church after leaving a toxic one. I hope more church leaders read this rather than only those who have been harmed.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020There is a not-so-well known show in US called "F for Food" where Gordon Ramsay goes back to the roots - sourcing ingredients that make up food, application - teaching and breaking down techniques and methods of cooking, and presentation - the outcome of what a beautifully presented self-cooked meal is - not just to all the senses, but also the soul.
What Gordon Ramsay does for us with culinary nourishment - Jeff and Terra Mattson do for us with human life and relational nourishment. They go deep to the roots of what makes up the composition, flavor, sights and ingredients of our personalities, traits, and preferences. They teach practical tools on how to observe, give voice, and take action on practical aspects of our lives that help ourselves and those around us heal, grow and thrive.
In the western world - including Christian church - where so much of leadership is attributed - and focused on "I" - Mattsons take us on a journey to see the rest of the word-picture that lies beyond "I" what we so rarely explore - "ntegrity".
Reading and re-reading this book helps me drive in into succulent "how" and "why" that continuously teach me how to "cook" a nourishing meal and share it with those whom I interact with - in relationships, family, work, organizations, church, government...
Take a break from widely-accessible "fast food" of motivational platitudes, re-heated TV dinner-like sermons, and esoteric chips of psychology texbooks, and give Mattsons' book a taste. It will change your life.
Your emotional and intellectual taste buds will come to experience such wide array of flavors, textures in your relationships, you will not shut up about it and people around you will want have some of what what you have been having.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2020This book offers a unique perspective into the sensitive but overwhelmingly needed issue of leaders that cause harm, intentionally or unintentionally, due to gaps between “what they practice versus what they preach.” The authors of the book bring over two decades of clinical experience in psychotherapy and organizational leadership to deliver a hope for more authentic leadership in the home, church, and workplace. They use a trauma informed approach that recognizes generational tendencies and neurobiology to help inform how certain leaders, despite their dissociation from reality, continue to hold power and spread a wake of harm in their respective systems. As a millennial reading this book, my hope is that it will come into the hands of even younger generations as the work toward authentic leadership should begin as early as possible! The book is well-constructed and easy to read. Each chapter ends with practical antidotes that readers can use to self-reflect and guide their actions in response to information learned. Thanks, Terra and Jeff for having the courage to deliver such a sensitive but necessary message to leaders of all kinds.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 7, 2021Filled with a wealth of wisdom and grace, Jeff and Terra, open up space to engage in conversations we often want to hide from others. This book goes straight to the hard topics. Issues that hold us captive and covered with shame. We all have places in our lives where there is a gap between what we say and how we live. Through practical faith-centered suggestions, the Mattsons describe caring ways loving communities can create safe places for people to bring their hidden personal challenges into the light. Healing and wholeness are possible for the struggles we face. Every page of the book offers grace-filled steps forward and a direction for living a life of integrity. This is a book every leader needs to read over and over again to leave a lasting impact of integrity within our homes, workplaces and faith communities.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2021I am thankful for “Shrinking the Integrity Gap”… this work is timely and acutely focused on some of the greatness needs for those who serve God’s ppl in the highly and even the less visible roles of ministry. In efforts to serve our God — who is Holy — we need to follow Him wholly — Spiritually, Physically, Emotionally, Relationally, & Mentally — this book offers great handles & ‘how to’s’ in navigating the GAP between what we believe and how we behave… such a GREAT read!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2020As a Christian leader for the past 3 decades who's experienced his own share of pitfalls & valleys, I can attest to the competency that Jeff and Terra bring to the table; as well as their tenacity to uncover the root issues we all deal with in our souls. After just finishing the intro and first chapter, I'm hooked... and ready for the challenge & growth that God will bring me through their proven perspectives.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2020Jeff and Terra Mattson have written a timely, yet timeless book. I picked this book up and was unable to put it down. Their words cut to the heart, challenging and convicting the reader to look at the integrity gaps in their own story. Jeff and Terra humbly offer wisdom, expertise, and a clear pathway forward, pointing leaders all of all ages towards health and wholeness. This book is a must-read!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2021Solid leadership guidance. I go back to this book over and over and have highlighted the living daylights out of it. This is timeless, helpful, and relevant information that isn’t going to be replaced with the next “hot” leadership trend.
