Editorial Reviews

Review

"I really like how this book emphasizes building on the talents and strengths of a person with high-functioning autism. It contains many useful case histories and combines both scientific and practical information for parents, teachers, and other professionals."--Temple Grandin, PhD, author of Thinking in Pictures

“What an immensely readable and empowering book! It contains everything a parent needs to know in order to understand, support, and advocate for a child with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder. The authors are leaders in the field--sensitive and compassionate clinicians as well as highly respected clinical researchers. This second edition provides practical insights and useful strategies that are well grounded in the most current scientific knowledge.”--Wendy L. Stone, PhD, Department of Psychology, University of Washington; Director, Research on Early Autism Detection and Intervention (READi) Lab

“This is the indispensable book I would want were I the parent of a child, adolescent, or adult with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome. Written and organized in a way that is highly engaging and accessible, the expert authors show parents how to maximize success at each stage of life from toddlerhood to adulthood. Unique in its positive approach, the
Guide focuses on how to capitalize on the strengths shown by affected individuals, offering practical strategies that promote self-esteem and better emotional health. Parents will find this hands-on guide engaging, informative, sometimes funny, and most important, highly useful.”--Deborah Fein, PhD, Departments of Psychology and Pediatrics, University of Connecticut

“With a plethora of books available about autism, this is one of the few that I recommend to parents whose child has just received a diagnosis. It is written by some of the world’s leading authorities, who combine up-to-date research and practice in a highly accessible way. While the content is grounded in research, it has many down-to-earth practical tips and advice. The second edition will be on the reading list I give my clinical students in child psychology and psychiatry.”--Tony Charman, PhD, Chair in Clinical Psychology, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, United Kingdom

"This is the book that I recommend you read first after receiving your child's diagnosis--you'll find researched treatments, strategies, and resources to begin helping your son or daughter right away. It will help you prioritize and chart the course for 'what's next.' The authors emphasize how gaining a deeper understanding of your child's strengths, talents, and preferences can help you create meaningful supports as he or she grows into adulthood."--Lynne Weissmann, mother of an adult with Asperger syndrome

"This is a really great book for parents….It is upbeat, positive, practical, and succeeds in being both jargon free and highly informative....Unlike many books for parents, this is very well referenced, has a good index, and is also full of useful information about relevant websites, newsletters and special centers. In short, although...it is a parents’ guide, the book is likely to be equally helpful to clinicians and educators working in this area, providing them with strategies that they themselves can use, as well as a host of practical approaches that they can pass on to parents."
(on the first edition) ― Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Published On: 2004-01-01

"A valuable resource. It not only informs readers but also leaves them with a sense of hope. They will realize that it is possible for children with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism to lead full and happy lives."
(on the first edition) ― Family Ministry Published On: 2014-03-24

"The positive approach of this book will be encouraging to parents and will also be very practical. I have recommended this book to the parents of affected children with whom I have worked and also to my graduate students who are eager to better understand the world of children with Asperger syndrome and high-functioning autism."
(on the first edition) ― Child Neuropsychology Published On: 2014-03-24

"Parents and clinicians alike will be hard-pressed to find a finer guide and resource.*****"
(on the first edition) ― Doody's Review Service Published On: 2003-03-03

"Throughout, readers will find excellent examples and solutions to basic problems; also included are numerous instances of older children who went beyond basic communication issues to social situations such as dating, school, living on their own, and employment. Most books on Asperger syndrome/high-functioning autism focus on early intervention and basic skills, but this book offers help for older children and adults as well, making it very valuable. Strongly recommended for public libraries and academic libraries with autism or education collections."
(on the first edition) ― Library Journal Published On: 2002-08-01

"You know an excellent book when it generously delivers on both the title and the subtitle’s promises….This book is one that truly follows through. The book is outstanding when it comes to helping parents in turn help their child on the spectrum. The authors present a powerfully humanistic perspective on the cognitive, behavioral, and social idiosyncrasies of high-functioning autismand they manage to reframe these symptoms as characteristics. This allows the reader to see these aspects as strengths that are ripe for utilization….You could say this book has two audiences: children with high-functioning autism, and their parents. Ozonoff, Dawson, and McPartland take great care of both communities.”

Wow this book was probably the most helpful book I’ve read. Most books are not so specific with practical help. But this one was. It gave me real ideas and tools to try. I highly recommend this to anyone with a child that has high functioning autism

Part of being a parent is to continuously search for answers for one thing or another. When our 6 yr old son was diagnosed with HFASD, we were shocked and left searching for answers. The evaluation report recommended this book and it provided many of the answers and guidance we needed to get started on treatments, schools, strategies, etc., and also what to expect and plan for in the future. It's proving to be an invaluable resource at a time when intervention is time critical and just getting started is itself a struggle.

The first part of the book goes over HFASD - how it presents, how it affects children and families, diagnosis, causes, treatments, etc. The description of how HFASD presents and how it affects socialization, education, behavior, etc. describes much of what we were seeing in our son. The second part of the book is an invaluable guide on living with HFASD that covers methods and strategies. The content is suburb and is helping us to become informed, make decisions, and develop approaches and roadmaps. The section on education and schools is particularly helpful at the moment given the state of our current school district.

I'll add that one of the heart breaking facets of dealing with HFASD is the exposure to other kids with similar or worse problems who aren't getting the help they need, live in bad environments, and/or don't have good or informed adult advocates. I've been recommending this book to our son's doctors, teachers, school, library etc. in the hopes that it can have an impact on these cases.

My 6 year old was diagnosed earlier this year with level 1 ASD. I was afraid the information in this would be outdated but it wasn't. I found myself nodding along, relating to almost all of the book. It was a great read after my son was diagnosed and I'm glad I got it!

This book is a good introduction to what the Autism Spectrum is and why it occurs. It is a good read for someone who may have had a family member recently diagnosed and knows little about this subject. It gives information on education and discipline that is very useful and explains how to go about getting a correct diagnosis which is very important. It also explains how to become an advocate for your family member in making sure he or she gets the best treatment to help them manage their behavior. It gave me a whole new perspective on this condition.

Well written for a beginner to the field of Autism Spectrum, this book is a great reference for what to expect and allows the novice to realize that this is so much more common than one might imagine and 20 years ago when I went through this process with another child, there was nothing out there compared to what there is this time around. The frustration comes in finding parent support groups in small communities. They just don't exist and parents are far too busy with all that is going on in the new developments of their lives along with full time jobs and other children, to begin a group. This book does not help in knowing where to go for supportive parent resources as much as it is helpful in diagnostic and clinical resources. All three elements are necessary but the third is sorely neglected.

Great book filled with valuable information for parents who want to understand their kids or any other kids with ASD in the high functioning areas and as well for kids in the non high functioning area. I recommended to all parents and people that was to learn more about autism.

This is a book every parent with a child on the Autism Spectrum needs to have in their library. The authors write in a clear, concise style that gives you the information you need without having to dig for it.

The book is divided into two parts. Part One discusses what Autism Spectrum Disorder is, how it is diagnosed, possible causes, and treatments. Part Two gives you the day-to-day advice and practical information about helping children with autism from early childhood through adulthood. If you find the material in Part One too theoretical to follow, or you are most interested in learning something to help you and your child right away, you can start with Part Two. I started with Part Two, since the possible causes of my son's autism, while interesting, was a case of "water under the bridge".

Good general advise. Nothing new that I hadn’t already heard. pg243 was a very weird page talking about teaching ASD teens about masturbating and even gives an example of a mom giving her son nude pictures to do so...Very weird and disturbing advice on that front.

This book actually gave me hope for my poor son.
I live in Cambridge where there is no provisions for Autistic Children, just some meetings here and there and my local assessment centre 'The Croft' could not understand him at all.
So, in search of some sort of understanding as to why no school would accept my quiet son, it was this book that filled in all the gaps. I am now armed with fuel to fight for his education. Why a little professor can't be part of a school is just simply discrimination! Thanks for sharing your story and your mum must be really great.

Best of luck for your future.
