A Ship of Bones & Teeth: A dark Little Mermaid retelling (Nightwind Book 1) Kindle Edition
Princess Maren is a woman with a secret.
When she was just 16-years old, she sold her soul to the sea witch Edonia, giving up a life underwater in exchange for the love of Prince Aerik on land. But after a decade of abuse and misery inflicted by the cruel prince, Maren wants nothing more than to leave him and her royal role behind and find Edonia to reverse the spell.
An opportunity for escape presents itself when the prince and princess are traveling overseas and are taken hostage by a band of notorious pirates, led by the fearsome Captain Ramsay "Bones" Battista. Maren has heard the sordid stories about the infamous pirate--not only is his ship supposedly haunted and crewed by the damned, but that no prisoners ever survive. Fortunately for Maren, she learns that the captain also has a score to settle with the sea witch. With any luck, Maren may be able to get her old life back, even if it's being held in the captain's wicked hands.
But Ramsay gets more than he bargained for when he learns who--and what--Maren is, and that her appetite for revenge, freedom, and bloodlust rivals his.
Meanwhile Maren finds herself falling for the pirate's dark nature, even as she discovers that Ramsay has a secret more deadly than her own.
When it comes to the high seas, not all monsters lurk beneath the surface.
Content Warning: Though this is a fantasy, it is also a dark(ISH) romance with potential triggers. A full list can be found inside the book. There is a spinoff of this book called Ocean of Sin and Starlight about another couple. However A Ship of Bones and Teeth acts as a standalone and has an HEA with no cliffhanger.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025I'm not usually into pirates so I was hesitant to read this book, but now I can't wait to start the spin off! Maren is amazing and the scene where she ***SPOILER ALERT *** goes feral and eats her abuser's heart made me want to get up and cheer. The spice is hot and just enough to not overwhelm the gripping story. Very rarely will I skip sleep to finish a book but tonight that's what I did- I just HAD to know how it ended. And it did NOT disappoint. Characters are savage syren (don't call them mermaids!) that mate men and then eat their organs, a shark bestie, an abusive human POS husband, sea witches, and vicious blood-thirsty vampire pirates. If you love a good enemies to lovers trope, mixed with high seas adventure, a tale of vengeance, and bloodthirsty vampire sex, you'll be delighted by this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2024I rated A Ship of Bones and Teeth about 3.5 stars, rounded up to four. Karina Halle has been one of my favorite authors ever since I first got hooked on her Experiment in Terror series, which still holds a spot in my top 10 favorite books. So when my book club chose this dark fantasy pirate romance that re imagines The Little Mermaid, I was curious to see how it would compare.
The Little Mermaid meets Pirates of the Caribbean in this standalone adult dark fantasy that weaves a tale of revenge, betrayal, and romance on the high seas. Princess Maren, who traded her life underwater for a cruel prince’s love, finds herself on a desperate quest to undo the curse she made with the sea witch Edonia. When she and the prince are captured by the notorious Captain Ramsay “Bones” Battista, Maren sees a chance to reclaim her old life. But as she and Ramsay forge a dangerous bond, secrets unravel, and both must face the monsters within and beyond.
First off, I have to commend Karina for the detailed trigger warnings at the start of the book. This is a dark story, and it’s clear she put thought into preparing her readers for what’s ahead. If you decide to keep reading, know that you’re diving in at your own risk!
I listened to the audiobook version, and while the production was solid overall, I had some mixed feelings. For some reason, the narrator’s portrayal of Maren didn’t quite match the image I had in my head; she sounded much older, which took me out of the story at times. Aside from that, it was an easy listen, though I must admit that the heavy emphasis on dark romance and smut was a bit much for my usual taste. I’m all for fantasy and romance, but the mood just didn’t hit right this time around, and I found myself fast-forwarding through most of the sex scenes. By the time they reached the point where Maren and Ramsay have sex while she’s in siren form, I was pretty much done and ready for the book to wrap up.
Honestly, if I hadn’t been listening to the audiobook, I might’ve stopped reading earlier. The story felt overly long, and I just wasn’t as invested as I’d hoped to be. Prince Aerik was an ass, Maren was okay, Ramsay was okay… but I did like the cat, even if I’m still puzzled about why there was a super-smart cat helping Maren with no real explanation.
All in all, A Ship of Bones and Teeth is expertly written, with a compelling and thrilling dark fantasy romance plot, but it didn’t quite live up to my high expectations. Maybe it’s because her EIT series sets the gold standard for me, or maybe it was just a matter of mood. Regardless, it was still an enjoyable read, and I’d definitely recommend it to fans of retellings, dark romance, and smut.
Despite this one not being exactly my cup of tea, I still have Karina Halle’s standalone An Ocean of Sin and Starlight, and I definitely plan to read that one.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2023🌶️🌶️/5 (some descriptive spice or repetitive)
A little mermaid retelling, this is dark, but not so dark you run screaming. Spicy, but repetitive so it wasn’t really anything groundbreaking. Definitely a great take on the story.
I really enjoyed Maren, but she didn’t really have this standout characteristic that made me say she was unique and something I’ve never read before. I love how she embraces her monster (syren) and isn’t afraid to show her teeth.
Ramsay was a good complement, the “villain” who is really just misunderstood and has built a strong family around him.
I think where this story falls a bit to the average side for me is the technical side of things. And yes, I know, this is *fantasy*. It’s clear there was some research done for ships and all that fun stuff about being on the seas, but the action, capabilities, and minutiae that I think some can overlook were kind of glaring issues for me.
Example: skirmishes on the sea were roughly explained and I never felt tension or fear based on the descriptions. Example: Ramsay and Maren have an entire conversation and fight under water (with legs) and they just walk over to the enemy. And talk. Under. Water. Yeah, it just kind of felt like we ignored physics and the whole existence of pressure that deep in the sea.
Overall, it was decent, but I definitely hesitate for anything more considering this took me over a week to read. I usually consume these kinds of books in two days. I just didn’t really have any motivation to come back to it except until around 80% when I was ready for it to be over. Cant say the plot was anything driving.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2025This book brought back my love of pirates! Combined with vampires, it’s off the charts. Told from both POV, I absolutely loved both main characters. Ramsey is definitely rough around the edges, though he has a sense of vulnerability that Maren seems to lack. I love how Ramsey relishes in Marin’s monstrous side and how possessive he is almost from the start. It’s fast paced and interesting…wondering what will happen next. I wouldn’t call this a dark romance but it has some elements that are dark.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2025“I’m a Syren. Mermaids are mythical creatures that you men made up, as if there were swarms of females in the seas just waiting to worship you.” I let out a mirthless laugh. “Syrens, on the other hand, we don’t want to worship you. We want to eat you.”
Omg haha this book was absolutely unhinged! There were a few parts that almost made me DNF and then all of sudden I absolutely loved both the FMC and MMC! Total whiplash!
Mind your triggers with this one- it gets progressively darker as the story unfolds! And the deaths are rather graphic!
Ultimately the ending sealed the deal for me! It was very cute and honestly kinda perfect.
I don’t know that I would reread this book again but I’m gong to rate it 4 Stars!
I’ll end with my favorite quote of the book-
“Of all the battles we fight, grief is the one that we cannot win. There is no winning and there is no losing.
Grief makes a home within your bones so that you'll carry it for all time.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Captivating
I can't say enough how much I love this book and the story. It pulls you and beckons you to keep reading. Love the spicy scenes and the whole flow of the book. Love the narrative from both sides as well

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy mother of god
I have read a lot of pirate romances. This one however hit differently. It is dark, like dark af — I’d say darker than Sea of Ruin. It’s a the little mermaid remake where the prince isn’t what he seemed and the grass isn’t greener. There’s pride, curses, action and pirates (duh obviously). This is a fantasy but the fantasy doesn’t overtake the whole book and the story is set in the 18-century?

5.0 out of 5 stars A fish and dirty pirate
Aaah amazing book....after so long i read Karina halle's book and it didn't disappoint me. I was hooked from the start and kept reading. It got intense as it moved forward. It was. Bittersweet ending. I was really sad for some characters. Maren and Ramsey I must say after so long im read a book where MFC is as equal to MMC.

5.0 out of 5 stars You’re the moon and I’m the tides and every thought, every need, every want, is drawn to you, Maren.
With a heavy hangover from Blood Orange I had this book preordered as soon as the prologue hit my mailbox and I wasn't disappointed. With a world building always so compelling and immersive Karina is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors in the genre. And while I was a little sceptical to begin with (I'm not a big fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and I never seen Little Mermaid either, just read the story as a child long time ago), to say that in the end I was happy I gave it a go would be a gross underestimation.
This book picks up with little mermaid story pretty much where Disney left off, the life with prince Aerik being on the side of a harsh reality rather than a fairytale bliss. He's not Prince Charming by any means - unfortunately so for our mermaid (syren, I'm sorry Maren, syren of course!) who is forced to reconcile her naivete stemming from her young age and a sheltered life so far with the cruel fate at the hands of a wife abuser. But let's just say the insecure prick gets what he deserves (though still a too much of a merciful ending for him, as far as I'm concerned).
Maren is a fierceful little thing and her character development is brilliant - from naive, shy and abused young girl to a strong woman confident in herself and her abilities. She has to come to terms with what she truly is as well as her life, and take back the control she got swindled out of.
She blossoms into what she was always meant to be, all thanks to Bones who through his affection and admiration allows her to accept, even like, the monster within her.
As for Captain Ramsey Bones Battista, well.. I actually had to reconcile myself with the name because you say Ramsey and I see Bolton - for those who know who I'm referring to: you know what I mean when I say that is not necessarily a bad thing but at the same time it very much is (and I'm fully aware that says more about me than it does about the author's choice of character names).
But pass that, this Captain with magic in the sails of his dreaded pirate ship the Nightwind is the real Prince Charming here. He's dangerous, absolutely lethal, as handsome as they come, and a man strong enough to not be hiding his emotions. He's unscrupulous in the pursuit of his desires and confident enough to not be intimidated by a strong woman - he actually wants her by his side. He's everything we love and more.
And I was chuffed to find out he has a lot in common with my beloved Valtu as well - who, by the way, I'm still reeling about (I read several books since Blood Orange and still can't shake off this masterpiece of Karina's imagination).
The interactions between Ramsey and Maren are great - the banter is fun, the chemistry is off the charts and the spice is as hot as it comes. They are both scary monsters in their own right, wild and dangerous, feral and passionate, free out there in their kingdom of the high seas. They are a perfect match to each other.
This isn't a super complicated story but it's a good fun, it flows well with plenty of action and in its own way it portrays a world just as romantic as Disney's fairytales, albeit quite a bit grittier and definitely not meant for children. It's closer to the original tale from Brothers Grimm in the atmospheric feel than the animated Disney world - the trade itself with the sea witch in the prologue sets the tone for what's to come. Though I'm actually not sure I would call it dark as the take on things is more grey rather than anything else, but alas that made a refreshing change to what I usually read.
(Definitely check the triggers though in case any of that applies to you - it's not too heavy on them but there are still some.)
A standalone story, no cliffhanger and all loose ends are nicely tied. While there is a bit of a distant connection to some of Karina's other books this is more about using tropes of a world already meticulously built rather than being an overlap or even a reference. It takes place in the past and while I can imagine Bones still being around to this day given all we know about him, there's no implication whatsoever that that's the case. Though I'd love to see how he would fit in with the likes of Solon or Valtu (pretty please, Karina, hint hint?).
Overall a great read that I cannot but recommend and I would give it quite a bit more than just five stars if that was possible.
Certainly worth the spend and I will be quite happy to read it all again in time.
SPOILER (as vague as possible):
The only thing I really didn't like (and I mean REALLY didn't like) was at the end where Maren pushed for hostages to be kept alive and released. I think that was unnecessary and it went against the nature of everyone on the Nightwind including Maren herself. It felt like it was there because HEA was only allowed for good characters, not the ones morally ambiguous. It felt forced for the sake of it and for me it took the edge off of the Nightwind. Like trying to apply current criminal code to a fantasy world to make it more palatable. Perhaps that's just me but I think it was out of place, out of character and it shouldn't have been there. It's not enough to warrant knocking a star off though, I just pretend it never happened:-)
