- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2019This is one of the required texts in one of my masters filmmaking courses. It’s an excellent survey of horror film history, why horror is transnational in nature and how the genre is used to make political and social statements and present psychological insights.
The author uses clear examples of movie treatments and humor to keep the discussion ‘alive’.
Ultimately, it’s informative and entertaining.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2014I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the horror film. I had to purchase it for a horror film class and I found it to be an enjoyable book. Easy to read, and very in-depth of major horror films throughout history.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2021The book is exactly the one I ordered, and it was received on time. The condition appears to be new. However, a number of the pages seem to not be attached and are loose in the book. It’s still readable, just disappointing for such a price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Scarily good!
Easily accessible to readers of all levels, but at the same time sufficiently in depth to be a quality academic text. I could not have written my honors dissertation without reference to Worland's book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good read
I bought this for my course in college called "Cinema in Horror". We don't read exclusively from this text, we read other articles and books as well. But I sat down and read it cover to cover by myself and was throughly enjoying reading about the different ways to interpret classic horror films.
A great book for a horror film buff.
