"The depth of research, generosity of spirit, and brilliance of biblical imagination make this remarkable book one of my favorite reads of a lifetime. I confess I need to see Jesus more alive and present. Blaine brings the presence of Jesus through the stories of the Hebrew Bible with such a vivid, lush, and compelling craft that as each chapter ended, I couldn’t stop."—Dan B. Allender, Ph.D. Professor of Counseling Psychology and Founding President, The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology

The Bible is a piercing drama, a tale of prophets and wandering spirits, heroic mothers and flashing swords, cosmic mountains and dry, shadowy Sheol. It is a true story that defines the nature and purpose of reality, and its claims are astonishing.

But few modern readers experience the Bible that way.

In this groundbreaking book, celebrated storyteller Blaine Eldredge draws upon years of research to illuminate the story of the Bible through the lives of six kingly characters. From Adam to Jesus, Eldredge combines thrilling retellings of famous stories with cutting-edge scholarship and robust theology to explore topics such as the Bible’s picture of evil, its sophisticated supernatural worldview, and its complex picture of the human condition.

The result is a stunning portrait of Jesus of Nazareth, the king and God and sacrifice who conquered death and overthrew the spiritual powers of this world and whose offer remains open to all:
Follow me, come home to reality, and heal your humanity.

I am not a big reviewer. But this book is absolutely incredible. The storytelling mixed with the harmony of scripture and high-level research makes it an easy yet profound read. On some levels you will feel as though you were reading Tolkien or Lewis; yet grounded firmly in the gospels or in the Paul. This is a must read!

Just finished this read. Wow.

It's difficult for me to adequately describe the scope of Eldredge's work in this book and it's effect on the reader. The Choruses are heroic, immersive and span ages of dramatic turns in the Ancient Near Eastern narrative. Each of the 6 kings profiled are handled in masterful fashion, with both a depth of imagination and love for the grand story of Scripture that are hard to disregard. Blaine's work in language is like an ancient artisan; he finds unique ways to reunite you with old truths and takes you on a tour de force through tales of the Bible which, while you know already, feel freshly unwrapped. It's so good. The bit about King Josiah was tragic, but totally enthralling, and just one example of the power of an author doing what God destined them to do - make words come alive and convey deep realities with eloquence, intensity and yet, raw compassion.

I was moved pretty profoundly by this book as a whole (especially the concluding chapter) and plan on reading it again. Blaine Eldredge has composed an absolutely breathtaking journey for people to revisit the ultimate Drama that is the Bible and come out the other side seeing King Jesus in an even more compelling light. As would be most fitting after finishing these pages, all I'm left to say is:

"Behold!"

On a recent trip, I pulled this book out to read it on the airplane during my downtime. But Blaine Eldridge is done in the Paradise King is nothing short of phenomenal. He is beautiful. He imaginatively crafted the story of Jesus, and it’s context from the beginning, with great faithfulness to biblical scholarship and orthodoxy.

I found myself interrupting my sleep to read it. I put down my phone and pick this up in order to gain insight again into the story.

I’m even considering giving this to my ordination candidates. I think everyone could benefit by reading. This is a wonderful book That I will revisit again and again

Friends, I just canNOT say enough about this book. It’s truly astonishing!
If you are bored with God and Jesus abd the Bible and church and religious activities…if other things seem more attractive than even the real Jesus…if your faith needs a boost…really, I cannot say enough about this book and the Audible version (both seem to be completely different experiences!) After 30 years of exploring the things of God from different tribes in the kingdom, few things have taken my breath. This does each time I give it even 10 minutes! So…I’m crawling through the audio and even slower through the book, letting my heart be swept up again, get arrested again in one of the highest visions of God I’ve ever encountered. It’s written by John Eldredge’s son and is somewhere between Shakespeare, Taylor Sheridan, the cutting-edge best scholarship today and Eldredge himself. Check it out…

It's genius.

I never imagined such a combination of theology, history, and Bible woven together like poetry. I read quite a bit and this is unlike anything else I've read. The level of detail and vivid description is remarkable. Amazing, really. I felt like I was in the garden with Adam, on the road with Abraham... and was in tears the last few pages of the Eschaton. Such hope. Redemption is coming and it's better than we thought.

Adding a chorus between chapters is creative and very helpful.

I don't know Blaine, but it's obvious he's an academic, historian, wordsmith and best of all, a lover of God. I can only imagine the research that went into this, the intimate conversations with God, as well as the countless hours to make it a joy to read.

I come away wanting to read the bible all over again. This book has helped me know Jesus, and makes me want to know him more. Most enjoyable book I've read in years.

Blaine Eldridge is an author with incredible imagination and talent. This story was like a roller coaster ride through the ups and downs of the lives of Bible characters. He opens up a big picture from the beginning of the world to its climactic ending and then forever.
I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for those who long to know and serve the King worthy of the throne.

Blaine Eldredge is hewn from the same rock as CS Lewis and - more recently - John White. He has written a beautiful story - a truly grand, sweeping narrative, yet one grounded in reality, that draws the reader into an unveiling of the circumambience that we live and move in.
The chronicle rolls inexorably forward, like wave building upon wave, gathering momentum, unfolding the revelation of King Jesus, until it breaks on the shore of eternity.
And "...there He is. What can I possibly say? Here at last is the earth shaker. Here is the cloud rider. He is the guardian of widows and orphans and the servant king who..."

This book impacts. The graphic historical context drew me into the story, and the significance of Jesus in history emerged with clarity. Somehow this book that is not a novel, and is not a theology lesson achieves the best of both. I found it to be a compelling story, as well as convicting and encouraging. This book is utterly unique and a blessing to anyone who reads it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Familiar stories in unfamiliar ways
Reviewed in Australia on November 7, 2023
The Paradise King tells familiar stories in unfamiliar ways. Like a literary version of The Chosen, but superiorly executed.

Eldredge reanimates the stories of Adam, Abram, Moses, David, Josiah & Jesus and then provides synthesised commentaries on each, weaving in some personal perspectives and his own stories, which at times are heartbreaking. Blaine adds further insights through extensive footnotes covering a mix of exegesis, further reading, and etymology.

Familiarity, or at least perceived familiarity, with a thing can sometimes be a dangerous thing. This is because familiarity can assume there is no new territory and can bring on a creeping passivity and disengagement. It takes much to shake oneself out of this kind of numbness that comes from hearing the same message over and over again, in which you end up taking it for granted and the message loses its impact. The Paradise King shakes you out of this. Blaine’s infectious passion both for Jesus and desire for people to be united to Jesus comes through in full force.

Chapter Nine: Eschaton is where this book for me hit its stride and really began to crescendo. Here it brought all that came before it and invites you to take it off the page, reminding you of the story you are in, the hope of the Gospel, and compels you to respond.
