Patrick Carman on his mission:

Since 2003, I’ve been writing books for young readers and spending a lot of time on the road, meeting them where they’re at. More than 2500 school visits later, I can report from the field that kids still love books, even as a tidal wave of distraction try to keep them from turning pages. Books still shape young minds, and they still provide unparalleled advantages every kid needs. My mission after nearly two decades and thousands of school visits hasn’t changed: get every kid excited about reading, because reading helps every kid thrive.

When I visit schools I always ask lots of kids the same question: what’s keeping you from reading? Let me count the ways! Netflix, YouTube, Fortnite, Minecraft, Snapchat, Roblox, and Instagram top the list. None of these things are bad in and of themselves, but taken together, they build a wall around books that can be difficult for a kid to climb. That’s why Skeleton Creek goes looking for kids where they are. Through the use of video content and words, Skeleton Creek draws kids in and hooks them on reading. Sometimes we just have to be willing to meet them halfway.

Ok so I know “scary” is a relative term. This book is really good...I just wanted to warn people because I was not prepared enough! I read lots of reviews that said their kids around 5th grade liked it, and only that it was “creepy.” To me, creepy < scary. I have a 5th grader, and he also has a 2nd grade sister. Traditionally speaking, the 5th grader is the easily scared kid, and the 2nd grader is BRAVE. She loves stuff like Five Nights at Freddy’s, for reference. So when I read this book was “creepy” and for the middle grades bunch, I thought it was the perfect compromised read-aloud for us to read together at night. WELL we were doing great until we got to the first video. Holy crap! I won’t spoil but I’ll just say it has a really scary jump-scare in it! And my 2nd grader ftfo! 😂😩🤦🏻‍♀️ Mom of the year right here. Maybe I’m just dumb but I wanted to warn others just in case! Watch the videos yourself first to gauge if your kid can handle it. I wish I had!

I am a 7th grade teacher and have been reading this book to my class. My students just love this book. Before this book it was very hard to get them to read but now they ask me everyday if we are going to read from Skeleton Creek. The students now want to take out the other books from this series and read on their own. The connection with the written word and the internet really appeals to students of this age. I would recommend this book to any teacher who wants to get their students actively involved in reading.

Every year in my 5th grade class we read the Skeleton Creek series. I read the books to them about 10 minutes a day. Several have bought the series to read again. Great mysteries for middle school students.

My middle schoolers love this series. One thing I do not like is that the page numbers continue rather than starting over for each book.

My son liked the videos that went along with the stories. They were a nice visual for him.

In case you are as book illiterate as me, Omnibus means all 4 books are in one book, so one huge book.
As far as the story, my 11 year old son liked it, but stopped around book 2 because the videos were too scary for him. It's been a month and he hasn't picked it up again yet.

Questo libro è il primo di una tetralogia, se non mi sbaglio, della quale solo i primi due sono stati tradotti in italiano. Devo dire che è veramente appassionante, un mix di giallo e horror .

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I have spent the last few weeks reading this book to my children at bedtime, so I have held off from reviewing it until now. All I can say is that it is the most innovative approach to storytelling I have ever seen. Every night there was a buzz as to whether we would reach another password to access another video on Sarah Fincher's website. Every night was an event with some of the videos being genuinely scary. The acting of Amber Larsen who plays Sarah is essential to the success of the approach. She totally inhabits the character and makes it clear why Ryan, whose diary we read, would follow her anywhere.
This book would be a fantastic teaching tool for reluctant readers as it would take a stubborn reader indeed who won't get hooked after the first password is entered.
