In Vital Harmony: Charlotte Mason and the Natural Laws of Education Paperback – November 11, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
She devoted her life to finding the key principles of education and then developing methods to make the most of them. The result is a comprehensive picture of living and learning that breathes life into education at every level—from babyhood to the adult years. It’s not a rote system, but a flexible set of ideas that keep education in focus.
These principles are for everyone concerned with teaching and learning. They are no more difficult to implement than the principle of gravity which allows you to walk, run, and even--when you know what you are doing--to soar.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2020Today I (Tammy Glaser) had my teachers and staff read the chapter on the third principle (authority and obedience). Karen Glass's ability to apply Charlotte Mason's thinking to modern readers is fantastic. Her analogies are spot on and helped us come up with ways to help our students see that following extra rules this year is a duty and, when done well, is in service of our friends and loved ones and it honors our King. Her illustration of a traffic free-for-all will be especially helpful in helping middle and high schoolers understand because they are either driving or they are looking forward to driving some day. The thoughtful conversations it inspired will help us lead by example since we too are under authority and we have opportunities to practice obedience when it is right.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2019An excellent book that contains powerful ideas presented in illuminating and clear ways. I appreciated reading this book. I have read many Charlotte Mason themed books but this one helped me crystallize the ideas in a new way and gives me more hope in implementing them to the fullest. Highly recommended to anyone interested in learning and teaching (yourself and others). Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 30, 2022Great resource for homeschooling families utilizing Charlotte Mason's method. Breaks down Miss Mason's principles in an easy to understand way.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2020This book gives a thorough explanation of Charlotte Mason's 20 principles. Karen Glass boils them down to the two main ones and shows how all the others fit nicely within the main two. I have more confidence in implementing Mason's educational philosophy after reading Glass' book. It's easy to read but full of insight and brings clarity to Charlotte Mason's philosophy. I recommend for newbies and veterans of Charlotte Mason!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2020The analogies in this book are amazing! Karen does a great job of clearly defining Charlotte Masons principles and how they all fit together. A must have book!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2020As always, Karen takes a busy swirl of ideas and principles and walks you along the path, shedding light on the nooks and crannies not immediately visible. Charlotte Mason’s 20 principles have been discussed and studied by many, but I really appreciated the way this book presents them and gives inspiration.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2020As always Karen makes you think.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2021This is a excellent must-read for any home educator, especially those who seek a Charlotte Mason education for their children. You will be uplifted, encouraged, set free, and directed in what constitutes “true education” according to the natural laws of education and the universe. 10/10.

A brilliant explanation. Highly recommended to anyone interested in education - teachers, parents, policy-makers. If we understand what education is, and who we are educating, many concerns will fall into place.
