Byline: How Local Journalists Can Improve the Global News Industry and Change the World Hardcover – September 19, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Journalism is in crisis, but the solution is right in front of us.
It’s no secret that news outlets are struggling to maintain their audience, and journalism jobs are being cut to accommodate tighter and tighter budgets―all while the public regularly falls prey to “fake news.” Today, news consumers have lost trust in journalism. They sense, rightly, they aren’t getting the whole story.
By reimagining a model for international journalism, Cristi Hegranes has proven we can reverse this trend―by changing who tells our stories. Local reporters with proximity to events and access to diverse sources tell fuller, more accurate stories―the sort of news consumers have been demanding for years.
Featuring original interviews with some of the biggest names in journalism, including Nicholas Kristof, Carroll Bogert, Bobby Ghosh, Lauren Williams and Global Press reporters across the planet, Byline makes a bold case that international coverage led by local journalists can restore trust in the entire industry.
To enact this solution, the industry will have to let go of many outdated assumptions about what news people want, who has a right to tell their story, and just what security means in the new era of journalism.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Cristi Hegranes's Byline upends the idea of foreign reporting as historically practiced, and thoughtfully offers better, accurate ways forward. Her oft-amusing examples of "parachute journalism" are eye-opening, expose dangers and limitations of mainstream media, and inspire all of us to do better. Where this book most shines is in proffering solutions, such as how communities can tell their own stories or how audience feedback can be revolutionary. There's nothing parochial about Hegranes's vision for local news; indeed, it's an essential guide to committing and consuming journalism in the new world order.
S. Mitra Kalita, CEO, URL Media
Byline is an essential book for anyone who cares about international journalism. Drawing on 17 years' experience building and running one of the most transformative models for journalism to be found anywhere in the world, Hegranes is uniquely positioned to explain what’s wrong with the current system and, most importantly, how it can genuinely be improved.
David Bornstein, Co-founder, Solutions Journalism Network
Byline is many things, prescient, erudite, and timely but it is especially an affirmation of the value of journalism when it is done well.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023It’s unlike any journalism/state of the media book I’ve read. It helped me understand why news is the way it is and offers a glimmer of hope for how it can be better.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2023What a compelling read! Hegranes makes a strong case for accurate, ethical, and dignified international journalism. Highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2023Just finished this book - blew through it, to be honest, and will be giving copies to lots of friends!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 20, 2024TL;DR -- Don't waste your time on this thinly-disguised advertisement for the author's white-savior-complex vanity project.
Hint: For someone raising millions on the argument that foreign correspondents like CNN's Sanjay Gupta get things wrong because they lack local knowledge and context, Cristi Hegranes conveniently ignores all the corrections the Global Press Journal's journalists have also had to issue. (Those that they've admitted to or caught, anyway. How many readers do they have, including those who could confidently flag mistakes or fabrications out of rural Congo, Mongolia, and Sri Lanka?) It's also worth checking out how many foreign-based story editors, research editors, copy editors, fact-checkers, graphic designers, and photo editors are credited on every "local" GPJ story, and how long it takes those stories to get published, before holding this up as a viable model to replace the "parachute journalism" needed for delivering breaking news to international audiences.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024Cristi Hegranes has done an excellent job of documenting how journalism is not making use of existing local resources in covering international news. As cutbacks continue at newspapers throughout America, her insights have a direct application to how we cover the news in America. This is a must-read book for anyone in the journalism business. There are obvious strategies that flow out of this book that can help us all do a better job in covering the news.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are concerned about the future of news, I highly recommend reading Byline.
Byline is an essential read for anyone who cares about the future of journalism. In this timely and important book, Cristi Hegranes argues that the global news industry is in crisis, and that the best way to fix it is to empower local journalists.
Cristi draws on her own experience as the founder and CEO of Global Press, a nonprofit that supports local journalism around the world. She shows how local journalists are uniquely positioned to tell the stories that matter most to their communities, and how they can use technology and innovation to reach a global audience.
Byline is not just a critique of the current state of journalism. It is also a blueprint for a better future. Hegranes offers practical advice on how to support local journalism, both as a consumer and as a donor. She also calls on journalists themselves to embrace new technologies and new ways of storytelling.
If you are concerned about the future of news, I highly recommend reading Byline. It is a hopeful and inspiring book that offers a clear path forward.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2023This book was enlightening on so many fronts. The author gains access to some incredible names in journalism and sheds light on archaic, practices that must be changed. Her writing is accessible even for those not in journalism and the detailed, engaging and illustrative examples within the book help to better illuminate some of the challenges that this industry must address.
I strongly recommend Byline for anyone looking to learn more about international journalism practices, media literacy, and also just a good read!
What is rare about this book and the author is that it’s not only well researched and written, the author founded an international news organization and has over two decades of experience practising the solutions she offers. Most books on the journalism industry only criticize or point out challenges, but this book leaves you inspired by the stories of local journalists around the world, and the actionable steps that all news organizations can take today.
