Best solution for extending WiFi - read this review to understand why
    5 Stars
Best solution for extending WiFi - read this review to understand why
As I said in one of my previous reviews, buying technical products based on Amazon ratings can be pretty frustrating. NETGEAR EX6100 AC750 is a great example of why that is. Most of the complaints that you'll find in 1 star reviews are based on misunderstanding on how this type of product works. If you'll use this piece of hardware to extend your WiFi coverage - expect 50% less bandwidth when you connect to it since it uses that 50% to communicate with router. If you need 100% speed, you do have alternatives:1. This devices supports Access Point mode. Simply move slider from Extender to Access Point, connect LAN cable to this device and then use same SSID and password for WiFi.2. If you don't want to spend time laying LAN cable, you can use one band (2.4 GHz) to communicate with router and other one (5 GHz) to communicate with devices. This can be problematic because most of the devices support only 2.4 GHz... and 5 GHz band signal will tie you closer to router.3. Finally, you can try with other devices like TP-LINK AV500 that utilize powerline:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWRUICG/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00AWRUICG&linkCode=as2&tag=codeproject-20&linkId=5LNJ5PAFCLAMLAIGIn my case, this product was the best option because even with 50% dropdown in communication I get 15 MBit/s Internet (instead of 30 MBit/s Internet). And when I have time to spare I'll connect it with LAN cable. On the other hand, TP-LINK AV500 would require me to connect WiFi router / buy WiFi add-on at endpoint (since it is powerline + LAN).So, if you have problems with WiFi coverage, this is probably the BEST solution for you. If you need to connect just one device using LAN cable in some remote place in your home, powerline may work (it depends on how your power lines are installed, I had really bad experience with powerline tech).Just whatever you do, do not buy extra antennas for your router. I've left two detailed reviews on products that I've tried out and their price ($20+) is way too much for what they offer. Here are the reviews I mention, they contain more recommendations on EX6100:Asus WL-ANT-157 Antenna:http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R17FRD2FTCRJIB/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B005UBNJ48&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=codeproject-20&linkId=DGRPI7ZB4KW6LULE3 x 9dBi 2.4GHz 5GHz Dual Band WiFi RP-SMA Antenna:http://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1R1FM9PYRM8VM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8linkCode=ur2&tag=codeproject-20&linkId=TUFLTMG2TA7W7DYR&ASIN=B00DMJI9TA&camp=1789&creative=390957&Speaking of price, another VERY important point - buy REFURBISHED EX6100 (~$40). Devices like this are highly unlikely to malfunction - because of low heat generation and no mechanical parts. If they work within 90 days (refurbished guarantee period)... it's highly likely they'll work for years without problems.Let that be it for this review. If you have any questions, feel free to leave comment and I'll try to answer. For example, I see few reviews mention that EX6100 doesn't allow you to setup same SSID/password as your primary network, and have your devices autoswitch. That's simply untrue - you can easily setup same SSID/password in EX6100 administration. Finally, if this review helped you, I would appreciate marking it as helpful. Whatever you decide, good luck with your WiFi network!

2.4Ghz is slower speed wifi but the signal travels farther
5Ghz is faster speed wifi but the signal doesn't travel as far

    _______________________________

    My Goal:
Extend my verizon fios router wifi signal for both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz to my entire NYC apartment.
(Large apartment with many bedrooms, many walls, some of those walls are concrete)

My Verison fios wifi router is on one end of my apartment and i need to boost the signal from that to the other end of the apartment.

    _______________________________

    Currently:
I have a Linksys wifi extender i bought years ago but it's too weak to boost both 2.4ghz & 5ghz to the other side of my apartment, it's not strong enough to penetrate all the walls.

All the walls in my apartment eat up the wifi signal.

    _______________________________

    New Setup:
With this new Netgear wifi extender, i was able to remove my older wifi extender and i plugged this new Netgear wifi extender into an outlet on the other end of the apartment and now i get FULL BARS for both 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz in the ENTIRE apartment!

    _______________________________

The Netgear status shows me the signal strength the extender is picking up:
    2.4Ghz signal strength: 162Mbps
    5Ghz signal strength: 585Mbps

    _______________________________

    INSTALLATION (setup):

(It comes with a paper instructions booklet plus the instructions are online)

    Google: EX6250
The instructions are on the Netgear website.
    Very basic simple instructions.

Connect to the netgear extender using a device that has wifi (i used a windows 10 PC), connect it to the netgear wifi extender and then in your web browser go enter this URL address:
    http://192.168.1.250

(You should be able to do this same thing on a mobile phone or tablet)

That will take you to the Netgear admin page where you can follow the steps to configure your device.

    _______________________________

    Additional options:
There is an ethernet port on the device if you want to hardwire an ethernet cable to the wifi extender to configure the admin settings and as another way to connect the wifi extender to your network.

Fastlane option. From what i read, that will boost your 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz signal. You have to turn this option on and then you need to pick which signal to boost. You can only do one. So have to pick 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. So if you only need 5Ghz then you can use fastlane on the 5Ghz and the 2.4Ghz will be turned off. And now your 5Ghz will be faster.

    NOTE:
I would not use the "fastlane" option because Amazon Alexa smart plugs use 2.4Ghz. They won't work with 5Ghz unless you can find ones that do.

There is a 1 button quick setup. (WPS) but i don't use that. That basically lets you configure your home router so that if you press the WPS button on two devices (router and wifi extender). They will quickly sync together (quick setup) but you need to have that WPS option on your home router for it to work and that option needs to be enabled to allow it.

    NOTE:
I don't use that because that will also allow anyone to walk over to your router and connect themselves to your network without needing any passwords. (bad security)

Access point option. I don't plan to use that option. The wifi extender has a ethernet port on it, for the access point to work you need to use an ethernet cable and connect your router and this wifi extender together. I'm not 100% sure what the access point would be good for because the wifi extender option works really well. It's all you really need.

I don't know much about how that access point would work or how you should or could use it so i wont comment much on that.

In the end i ended up using the Ethernet port on the WIFI Extender to connect an ethernet cable from the WIFI Extender to my Roku.

Another good option, buy a small 8 or less port Ethernet Hub. Connect an Ethernet cable from the WIFI extender into the Hub. Now you can connect devices with an Ethernet cable (laptop, ethernet printer, etc), directly to the WIFI extender (assuming you need / want a wired connection)

The only reason to do this? Possibly a more stable internet connection? If all else fails. Try that.

    CONCLUSION:
This Netgear wifi extender is POWERFUL while being very compact. No external antennas required. Looks very clean when installed into a wall outlet. If you install at the top outlet, the bottom outlet will NOT be blocked.

I highly recommend buying it. A little pricey but it works well! Now it may be overkill if your apartment is very tiny. But if you have a ton of bedrooms with lots of walls & weak wifi signal. This should easily fix it.

If you have a big home especially with a big backyard and you currently have a weak signal. This might also be useful to cover a huge range and get wifi across your whole home and yard.

BUT check the specs first. The specs show the range it covers. It looks like you can connect two of these wifi extenders together if you need a bigger range but start with only 1 because it works so well you might only need 1.

    I've tried both the EX6100 and EX6200. The EX6100 is a solid 4-5 star product. The EX6200 is a 0 star paperweight.

    EX6100:
This device can serve as an extender or an access point, but is best used as a wired access point. When wired directly to another router, I get a 260 megabit connection in the room with the device on 5 ghz. However, when used wirelessy, and placed close to the source router which only has around 40% signal strength (Less than 100mbits), the transfer speeds then drop to around 40-80 megabit. This will happen with the 2.4 ghz radio in the same way, but it travels around twice as far, so there is more leeway. It is possible to use the 2.4g radio to communicate with the router, and 5ghz for clients. However, if your only option is wireless with 2.4 ghz, you should just get a cheaper repeater or refurbished router, as 5ghz has a short range, and Gigabit is pointless due to the low speed of the degraded signal.

It works by creating a new ssid for both 2.4 and 5ghz bands, which uses another wireless channel that wireless clients can then connect to. A physical button changes repeater and ap mode. In repeater mode, it uses wifi to connect to your main network. The ethernet port and new ssids can then connect new clients to your network (all data is sent over wifi, and half of this wireless traffic will be the repeater communicating with the first router). In ap mode, the ethernet port is used to make a physical connection to another router, and the wifi radios are only used for connecting clients.

Almost any full sized router can do what this device does, and custom firmware makes this easy. this device is basically a lightweight wireless router with an integrated power supply and single ethernet port. it has a DHCP server and NAT which can be enabled if required.

I purchased this because refurbished at 47$, it provides a good 5ghz signal to the back rooms of the house, where signal strength before was very poor. There is also an existing and unused ethernet connection at that location which allows it to create a high speed hotspot. If a free ethernet line did not exist, it would have to be used in repeater mode wirelessly, which does not allow it to be placed conveniently as it needs to be in range of the other router's wifi.

    Pros:
Cheaper than a second full scale AC router with external antennas.
    Small form factor.
    2.4ghz dual band N, and 5ghz ac.
Fairly good signal strength and good wireless speeds.
Gigabit ethernet port allows for full speeds in AP mode.
    MAC address filter.
Physical button to help configure/power device.
Status LEDs to help setup repeater or see usage.

    cons:
Only one ethernet port, which may require a seperate switch in AP mode.
Slow if used as a repeater without wired connection (not the device's fault).
Power supply integrated into device, so it can not be optimally positioned.
Antennas are small, not removable, swivel is fairly low quality.
Very simple web interface, no features seen in many high end network devices.

This would be better if it had 2 Ethernet ports, removable antennas, and detachable/hybrid power plug + screw slot for mounting.

Edit, there is a newer model with more bandwidth available, the ex6150. However, it would be near impossible to use all the bandwidth on the 5 ghz band. And for 120$, it would be smarter to just buy a router.

opening the device reveals three standard antenna connectors. 2x 2.4 ghz, and one 5ghz. You can very easily modify this to use 3 external antennas by using 2 inch IPX to RP-SMA pigtails. I have done this, and removed the wall-wart power supply. The device runs off of a 4.9v power supply, so if you remove it, you can just solder on a USB cable or use any DC 5v adapter that is rated for 2 amps.

    EX6200:
    - Very poor range and speeds on the 2.4 bands, even with different/directional antennas.
    - Randomly crashes and the 5 band stops working properly.
    - Some devices can't see the 5 band, this hasn't happened with any of the other AC/N routers I've used
    - Can be flashed with DD-WRT if you downgrade to an earlier netgear build first, but there is still poor performance on 2.4 and random crashes of 5g radio. This device is just very poorly engineered.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works perfectly BUT comes with travel adaptor

Works perfectly and does the jobs. Very easy to connect. Unfortunately it doesn't have an Australian plug so it arrived with a very flimsy travel adaptor. I didn't trust this adaptor (it was really unstable) so I went to Officeworks and purchased my own surge protected adaptor. It was unfortunate that I incurred another purchase for this product.
Other than that, all was well.
