From the NEW YORK TIMES, WALL STREET JOURNAL, & USA TODAY bestselling series.

Make a deal with the devil and you might get what you want, but will it be what you need?

Jennifer Sylvester wants one thing, and that one thing is NOT to be Tennessee’s reigning Banana Cake Queen. Ever the perpetual good girl and obedient daughter, Jennifer is buckling under the weight of her social media celebrity, her mother’s ambitions, and her father’s puritanical mandates. Jennifer is officially desperate.

And desperate times call for Cletus Winston.

Cletus Winston is a puzzle wrapped in a mystery covered in conundrum sauce, and now he’s in a pickle. Despite being convinced of his own omniscience, extortion by the exalted Banana Cake Queen of Green Valley has taken him completely by surprise. So... what’s a maniacal mastermind to do?

Likely, the last thing you expect.

Beard Science is book #1 in the Solving for Pie: Cletus and Jenn Mysteries series and Book #3 in the WInston Brothers series. Each book is a standalone, full length (110k words), contemporary romantic comedy novel, and follows the romantic exploits and adventures of one of the six Winston Brothers.

Review

“This book is bone achingly sweet, and had me laughing out loud in places in true Penny Reid form.”
–Heroes and Heartbreakers

“Penny Reid’s
Beard Science is awkwardly and wonderfully odd, and no carefully selected combination of adjectives can adequately communicate the mind-bending deliciousness of this thoroughly enjoyable book.”

Amazing, Amazing, AMAZING
WOW WHAT THE HOLY MOLY!!!SERIOUSLY I AM SO SHOCKED OVER HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK.WTF CLEUTUS I WASN'T SUPPOSED TO FALL IN LOVE WITH YOU!!!!I'm going to be painfully honest, I never wanted to read this book. I never understood why everyone was so obsessed with Cletus because for me, he wasn't really that special. I know! I don't know what was wrong with me, but in the previous books I thought he was cool but I wasn't rushing to get his story. In fact, the way everyone looked up to him like he had all the answers used to irk me a bit and subsequently, made me dislike Cletus a bit.So yeah, I was in no rush to read his book. And it felt like the more people told me how much I was going to love this book and "omg you need to read it he will change your life", the more I didn't want to read it and made me want to hate the book.Again, I don't know what was wrong with me. I was judging Cletus and this book pretty harshly but I guess it was one of those things where I just didn't want to expect amazing because I figured I'd be the one person to hate the book because that's what tended to happen when a book was a popular and loved as this book is.So I started the book, and I was holding pretty tightly onto my prejudices and judgments of Cletus. And then slowly, without me even noticing, I was falling in love with Cletus, Jennifer and this whole book. And trust me, no one was more surprised than me to find myself feeling that heart squeezing, smiling off at nothing, rereading lines over and over because you don't want to let go, feeling than me. It's a feeling I rarely feel anymore and is held only for books that are favorites and will surely be read many times in the years to come. And I was so shocked that I was and am feeling that way towards Beard Science.I loved the first two books so much but (and it kind of kills me to say this a bit because, ya know, pride and all that) but I think that Beard Science might be my favorite book in the series, and possibly my favorite book by Penny Reid. It's definitely in close second with Beauty and the Mustache and Elements of Chemistry.I feel so incredibly stupid for not wanting to read this book and more importantly, for assuming it wasn't going to be good. What a moron I was, truly!Cletus was...amazing. Simply amazing. The way he loves Jennifer makes my heart hurt in the best way, I cannot explain it.Jennifer was so freaking relatable I loved her so much. I loved everything about her and I loved seeing her grow a backbone and finally stand up for herself. I thought maybe she would annoy me because she was kind of weak but it was the opposite. It was because she was so weak that she was so strong. Maybe that doesn't make sense but it was the hidden strength behind her weakness that made me love her.I loved seeing all the Winston brothers and their women again. It was so great. I'm also DYING to get Beau's story with Shelly. I'm also really excited to read Roscoe's story, especially after something that was hinted on Penny Reid's Facebook page. And lastly, I am a bit scared (but still excited) to read Billy's story. I have a feeling it's going to be angsty (cue my scaredy cat-ness) but I'm so ready for Billy and Claire to finally be together. To wrap up my long fangirling review: I'm an idiot for not wanting to read this and Cletus is being added to my list of book boyfriends because I love him. Also, read this series.

I keep trying to review this book, only to come up with- astounding speachlessness.
Mind you this is not because I don't have anything to say. NOT at all. I don't know where to start, nor do I know how to write this review without it become a rampling fangirling mess...
So after a ridiculous amount of trials, that all completely failed. I have decided to go about this the scientific way. I am a scientist after all. I shall structure this properly. Go about it very scholarly. Add my fangirling at the end AND most importantly: I will try and keep my rambling to an absolute minimum
Okay here it goes:
Review

CRITICALLY

story line 4Stars

A slow smoldering (and o boy does it smolder!) romance between two unlikely love matches, who discover that sometimes what you think is the right thing for you, isn't really what you really want or need.
It's quirky, swooning and fabulous cute & fluffy with a good splash of real and lots of heart. Just like we all have gotten to expect from Reid

writing style 5Stars

I have read everything Reid has published so far. And I find myself re-reading her novels, which if you know me, you know MEANS something. I rarely re-read. Too many books on my TBR. I not only re-read Reids books, I adore them. That should be enough of an explanations, that I utterly adore her writing style. It's funny, clever and to the point. Yet it also beautiful, sensual and moving. Beard Science is one of her best to date, in my opinion, when it comes to prose.

character building 4.5 Stars

Now. I will try really hard to remind objective. Which is really hard, when you feel like you actually know all the characters, when they feel so real. That in itself, tell you how I feel about the character building, I guess.
Cletus was one of my favorite characters, right from his first appearance in Beauty and the Mustache. I completely and utterly fell in love with him from the get go. So I started this book feeling divided. Because I had this HUGE expectations. First I couldn't wait to read Cletus' story but what if he wouldn't live up to my expectations?! After I finished I felt divided because, Cletus' story was over. BUT Reid managed to not only meet my expectations, nope, she exceeded fare beyond them.
Cletus, who was a little bit of an enigma, but to whom I felt kinship somehow, now feels real, I feel like I understand him, the different layers that make him tick and yet to my utter delight, he still is a little bit of an enigma. Just like a real close friend would be. Reid's character building here is basically genius.
Jennifer has very little in common with me. Except our mutual love of baking (small batches, and her love in the food theory came straight out of my heart!!). Otherwise I found myself watching her with interest, getting to know a her, exploring who she was and who she became. I really couldn't relate to her relationship with her parents. BUT and here, comes again, why I love this book so much, while her character is alien to mine, I like her, I care for her and in the end absolutely adored her. I enjoyed discovering who she was and watch her grow.
As I said I couldn't relate to her relationship with her parents. And here is my biggest complaint about the book. And when I say biggest it's the only thing I didn't like much while I was reading. I found the parents too much. I felt like it was exaggerated. I couldn't believe that there were people out there, who treated family like that... and yet I love where Reid went with them. I reconciled myself that while a bit strong, it has aspects that could be real. Then I ended up reading so many readers review, where they said, they had similar issues like Jen. THIS just breaks my heart. I love how Reid responded to it. AND I found myself realising that I was wrong. Just lucky enough to have been surrounded by people who accepted who I was and supported me in my choices.
The support cast is awesome sauce. Though I wish there was more of the rest of the Winstons. Because really.. I adore the entire bunch!

EMOTIONALLY 5 Stars

I am moved and excited - yet astounded by this novel. I found myself pondering over it on many occasions since I read it. When I finished it I was sad, because I didn't want it to end. Yet I am excited about Billy's story, can't wait to get my hands on it. And then again I am worried about one of my series coming soon to an end... it will be too soon.
Straight after reading I rated this 4.5 Stars... yet a couple of weeks in.. it is 5 stars. Because as time progressed I discovered how much I really love it, how deeply it touched me... and how amazing this really is. I will not go into my feeling of kinship for Cletus, or how much I adore Duane.. how I feel kinda ridiculous about how much I care about them. How well written they all are.. But rather let me try and explain how much I have to come to admire Reid. I honestly have a total girl crush on her. She is not only a talented story teller, she is witty and clever- and she does geeky beyond well! -but she also has insight and heart. If I had any stalker tendencies.. I'd totally become her main stalker. The good news is she is in luck, I ain't a stalker, I just fangirl. And I promised to keep that at a minimum. (I am trying!) So I will just say, this book is the reason to why I love romance books. This book epitomises why Reid is not only one of my favorite authors but is someone I greatly admire. I love how she supports girl power and encourages individuality. Which is evident in her Facebook group and while I'm at it, I love the Sharks of awesome!

OVERALL

One of the best releases in 2016.
It's fun, swoony cute & fluffy. One of those books you can't put down and leaves you happy, yet wanting more.
One of my favorite books. ever.

Cletus is hilarious. He has been my favorite brother side character in the previous books of this series and so I was excited to read his story. After Jenn’s confession to Jethro in the prior book about hating being the banana cake queen and her true desires, I wondered how she was snag Cletus, with blackmail it seems. How fitting.

Cletus is a plotter and if you get on the wrong side of him, he will plot some revenge against you. It might be harmless like itching powder in your shirt or he might work on framing your motorcycle gang for racketeering (deservedly so) but he will get back at you. Jennifer accidentally caught Cletus stealing procuring some evidence from the police to add to his collection against the Wraith’s motorcycle club and she needs help breaking away from her parents and their expectations of her. Cletus is the most dangerous person she knows and so she enlists his help in procuring a husband.

***“You'll know one day, Cletus. You'll discover what it's like to find the other part of yourself. You'll know it's her, only her, always her. Maybe not right away, but eventually you'll know. She'll be your beginning, middle, and end. And your intentions won't matter. Love brings its own intentions, and all other plans, hopes, and dreams fade to insignificance in the face of love.” ***

I liked that Jenn surprised Cletus, she was nothing like he expected and he helps her a little at a time to breakout of the mold that her mother has made for her. It was refreshing to see how he helped to give her permission to choose things for herself and decide what she likes. I felt so bad for how Jen’s parents had treated her all her life, their expectations of her and how they kept her locked down and dependent on them.

This was my favorite story so far. It was great to see Cletus knocked off his stride and all the plans that he thought he had in concerns to Jenn thrown so far off track that he’d never recover. She is perfect for him and he was so good for her as well. Jenn’s growth was fantastic and I liked that it was a little bit at a time she was able to take back her independence.

Cletus, that guy cracks me up and I really loved all the interactions he had with his family. He is funny and strange and wonderful. It was funny watching him fall in love without even noticing it.

***“I changed my mind.”
“You changed—”
“My. Mind.” I stopped short and faced him, placing my hands on my hips. “It’s like underpants, Jethro.”
“Dirty and dark?” He smirked.
“No.” I scowled at his facial expression. “A mind is like underpants because people change them all the time.”
“But you don’t.”
“I do change my underpants all the time, Jethro. And, for the record, I think it’s mighty rude of you to assume I don’t.”
He almost rolled his eyes, but caught the urge. “I meant your mind, Cletus. You don’t change your mind.” ***

There was one little thing I didn’t like and that was at the very end [they have sex without any form of protection happening and Jenn isn’t on birth control but oh well if we get pregnant, we get pregnant. (hide spoiler)] stuff like always tends to bug me just a little. It did kinda fit their characters though so like I said it was only minor.

When I was reading the previous books in the series, I thought Cletus was a strange duck. Then again I thought the same of the Banana Cake Queen. But Jenn and Cletus are a perfect match. He is probably one of the most intriguing characters I’ve ever met.

Yes for Cletus and Jen! I am so happy Jen finally broke out of her shell and Cletus got trapped in one of his own meddling! I find Cletus fascinating and couldn’t wait to see more of him and of course what would happen when he would fall head over heels for someone! And that was everything I could hope for!
