A veteran police detective, Robert Snow was devoted to evidence and hard facts―he had never given any thought to reincarnation. But during a hypnotic regression, he experiences a vivid awareness of being alive in three separate historical scenes. Remaining skeptical, Snow begins to investigate with the intention of disproving reincarnation. Instead, diligent research and corroboration from multiple sources reveal solid evidence that he lived a former life as Carroll Beckwith, a nineteenth-century American artist. Portrait of a Past Life Skeptic tells the fascinating story of Robert Snow's transformation from skeptic to believer.

I grew up where Captain Robert Snow was the highly respected Chief of Homocide in Indianapolis. I was astonished to learn that he'd written a book on reincarnation. His story is compelling and even though I am a HUGE skeptic I cannot discount this book. I've read this book at least three times, trying to find the B.S. but I can find none. Probably the ONLY book I've ever read on this subject that I actually believe is true.

This is a quick read, I read it in one night. I bought it after hearing the author on NPR. I found the info. contained in it to be quite convincing, as I also did after reading the book "Soul Survivor" by the Leiningers (which I recommend). Both accounts contain factual details which could not have been known by normal means. This book needs some more editing, however, as the author takes longer than necessary to say things, and is often redundant when he does so. Probably 1/3 of the book could be eliminated without detracting from the story, in my opinion. Nonetheless, I would recommend it to anyone considering the possibility of the reality of reincarnation, who wants to see if there are inexplicable facts which do indeed support such a belief. Not just wishful thinking, religious bias, or superstition, but FACTS.

This is an updated edition where Robert Snow talks about what's happened since he wrote about his incredible experiences: He was able to verify 26 out of 28 data points from his past life regression session, and with readers’ help this has been pushed to 100%, but, hey: 26 out of 28 is enough to make me a believer!... how else do you explain it?

But not everybody can accept it, not even when the facts are staring them right in the face. Several years after the book came out Snow agreed to take a lie detector test for the show “Proof Prositive”. He ended up taking two seperate lie detector tests for the show and passed them both. It was during this time that he was interviewed by a local alternative news magazine called “NUVO” which wanted to do a feature story on his book — soon afterwards NUVO news-boxes all over downtown Indianapolis had Robert Snow’s face plastered on the front of the magazine with the insulting caption: “Captain Karma” . Understandably, this caused the Indianapolis police department considerable embarrassment, but they didn’t take any administrative action then. The tipping point came shortly afterwards when when the Proof Positive segment aired on national television: without any reason given, Snow was removed from his position and transferred to the Citizens Service Desk, which is the next stop before retirement. Captain Snow got the strong hint, and he decided to retire several years after this. His police writing career also greatly suffered. But despite all this he has no regrets, and while his own police department unfairly threw him away for sharing his incredible experiences with the public, a lot of fellow officers privately thanked him and said they found the message of his book inspiring.

Do we continue on in some way after death? Robert Snow’s incredible journey says YES. The only remaining question for me is did this journey happen inside of him, or was he able to access some greater consciousness while in the hypnotic state that allowed him to discover these facts about Beckwith’s life? On this note, it's worth looking into Kozyrev's Mirrors where occupants are supposedly able to access other lives.

And speaking of other lives, I wish Robert Snow would do more past life regressions to see if any other past life experiences not having to do with Beckwith become rock-solid, like Beckwith’s —

The best and most compelling case in favor of reincarnation I have come across. The conclusion is inescapable: the most plausible explanation is that the memories of the past life are real. The fact the author is a police Captain adds credibility to the story and to his investigation of the origin of the vivid memories and specific details he experienced during a regression performed by a hypnotherapist (if you read the book, keep in mind these events happened in the early 1990's before Google and the prolific use of the world wide web). It is also worth noting the CPT Snow was required to take 2 lie detector tests in order to tell his story in the TV program Proof Positive (he passed both). Captain Snow wrote this book because he felt the information should be revealed, even though he felt it would have negative repercussions. Indeed, he had to retire from his job a few years later, and it also affected for several years the publication of his other books (Captain Snow has written many other books on law enforcement topics and was interviewed by CNN correspondent Daryn Kagan in October of 2002 on the topic of the sniper shootings in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia).

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting - even compelling

This is a retelling and republication of Snow’s original book about his sceptical discovery of the phenomenon of past life regression and reincarnation. It is definitely a book to be read by anyone investigating consciousness and near-death experiences. The story flows well, but more importantly you have strong sense of the author’s commitment to truth based on fact. Snow has natural gifts as a writer, displayed well here. Don’t take my word for it. Read it.
