Editorial Reviews
Review
—Jack Stern, MD, PhD, professor of neurosurgery at New York Medical College; author of Ending Back Pain; editorial review board member of Spine and The Spine Journal; and past president of the board of governors at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
“This book challenges the reader to take a science-based, potentially transformative journey toward recovery from chronic pain, surely one of the most burdensome health problems we face. Rachel Zoffness has captured that precious sweet spot where scientific discovery, clinical expertise, compassion, and respect overlap. If you are ready for a journey that may well change your life, then pack this book.”
—Lorimer Moseley, DSc, PhD, FAAHMS, HonFFPMANZFA, HonMAPA, professor of clinical neuroscience, and director of IIMPACT in Health at the University of South Australia; and CEO of Pain Revolution
“This workbook is a must-have for anyone experiencing chronic pain. Based on science, Rachel Zoffness provides easy-to-follow strategies to understand and change the experience of pain while infusing humor, compassion, authenticity, and courage throughout. Each chapter introduces a new skill, so by the end of the workbook you have everything needed to reclaim your life.”
—Heather Poupore-King, PhD, clinical assistant professor in the department of anesthesiology and perioperative pain medicine, and director of the Pain Psychology Fellowship at Stanford University School of Medicine
“Rachel Zoffness has done it again. In The Pain Management Workbook, she skillfully describes how negative emotions, stress, and anger can impact pain. More importantly, she provides a range of evidence-based, behavioral approaches, including mindfulness, relaxation, and healthy choices—as well as a plethora of exercises to promote transformation. If you are in pain or work with those who are, this workbook contains welcome recipes for self-care and healing.”
—Robert Bonakdar, MD, FAAFP, FACN, director of pain management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, coeditor of Integrative Pain Management, and 2018 Mayday Pain Advocacy Fellow
“If you feel pain will never end or want alternatives to opioids, The Pain Management Workbook provides solutions for taking control of your pain. It’s grounded in science, based on extensive clinical experience, and integrates the power of mind and body to mobilize health. The guided practices are actually doable—and promote healing. It’s the best self-care workbook that I can recommend.”
—Erik Peper, PhD, professor of holistic health at San Francisco State University; coauthor of Tech Stress; and producer of the blog, peperperspective.com
“Treating chronic pain is one of the most vexing medical challenges that physicians ever confront. In a field offering many approaches to care, Rachel Zoffness’s workbook stands out for its comprehensive and scientifically grounded approach to pain management. Her step-by-step, collaborative method promises a clear path toward healing that is realistic and effective. As a physician, I am thrilled to have this valuable tool to recommend to my own patients.”
—Jacob M. Appel, MD, PhD, JD, MPH, assistant professor of psychiatry and of medical education, and director of ethics education in psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
“Rachel Zoffness skillfully unravels the complexities underlying chronic pain, and presents the reader with an approachable way of conceptualizing the condition. She provides a clear, scientifically based pathway to break free from its firm grip and reclaim quality of life. This empowering book is an excellent resource for anyone in pain, or for people wanting to help those living with painful conditions.”
—Ravi Prasad, PhD, clinical professor and director of behavioral health in the department of anesthesiology and pain medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine
“If you are in chronic pain, want to understand why you have it and what you can do for it, you need not look beyond Rachel Zoffness’s excellent book. She has highlighted many of the difficult, important-to-understand concepts of chronic pain, including the biopsychosocial aspects of pain, and offers a mechanism for people to work through their pain.”

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2021We’ve heard of Triple P for parenting now there’s Triple C for CBT - Catch it, Check it, Change it! These and other fun catchy phrases are abundant in this easy-to-read pain management book. Kia Ora, I am a Pain Psychologist who works in and studies pain. Whilst I was ‘gifted’ this book for the review process - having done all of Dr. Zoffness’ courses and read her other book – I would definitely have bought this book anyway – it is great value for money, is sturdy and nerdy with each chapter having a full list of references! In Dr. Zoffness’ book, difficult concepts are broken down for us to readily understand. This leads to great buy in and motivation for use of proposed strategies that are based on a strong analysis of the latest research and sometimes in consultation with leaders of the field. Highlights of this book are many and for me as a psychologist it is the importance of contextualization that I particularly like given pain is contextually driven and management of the pain experience needs to be relevant for the person in their context at that particular time. The analogies in the book are another highlight as are the handouts that are downloadable and the extensive resource list of readings, apps, websites, guided audio tracks and podcasts. Whilst predominately CBT in nature, ‘doing what matters’ via such exercises such as goal setting and diffusion through turning down the power of unhelpful thoughts alongside many mind-body activities really does see the biopsychosocial management strategies come alive. Normalization of many worries a pain patient may have is also embedded throughout the book as are important lifestyle factors that also promote biopsychosocial practice. While probably for most people in pain the book is a lengthy read so a clinician may need to be alongside to help get to the end, which Zoffness notes is actually the beginning.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2023Got this book as part of my own therapy journey working with chronic pain, heart issues, and childhood trauma with effects on my health.
It's very conversational, like the author is speaking to you. It feels mostly comfortable, but can be a bit cheesy sometimes.
The good: Great insight from CBT to understand pain, pain volume, and seeing where the pain comes from and how it affects consciousness and thought. Some really innovative ways to imagine/externalize your pain to understand it. From this book I was able to sort of identify my pain as a spirit animal, who needs attention, can tell me when something is wrong, but i can love and care for. This has been very helpful in my pain journey.
The bad: Not really much bad in it. If you don't like writing a lot, you may not enjoy it so much. Sometimes it also leans into a theme of how pain leads people to stay at home and do nothing. That doesn't apply to me personally, much, but I can see how that could be helpful for others. Some of the suggestions are pretty obvious though. Overall not bad though.
The ugly: Sometimes the author falls into the trap of "Write down your symptoms/feelings/throughts about this thing. Here are some examples. Now what are yours?" And the examples are already there. For a thoughtful person, it's a bit patronizing, but it's overall well intentioned and has a lot of research supporting it, and honestly this kind of thing might actually be really helpful for some.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2021I am 4-time cancer survivor who, after my second stem cell transplant, has struggled with chronic pain that originates in my thoracic spine, runs through my shoulders, and then travels down my arms so that I have a burning sensation on the tops of my forearms. I know with certainty that the pain started while I was in isolation for my second transplant nine years ago, and it threw my medical team off because it was not really something they had seen. In the years since I have had an MRI of my complete spine to search for structural damage that could cause my pain. None was found, nor was any nerve damage despite that we all agree my pain is nerve pain the way it travels around. Only recently, due to my persistence in finding a cause, my team at Sloan Kettering agree that my pain is most likely due to brain injury sustained from two battles with brain cancer and the additional treatment beyond that which saved me from systemic non-hodgkins lymphoma twice before. I have been taking drugs like Gabapentin and Lyrica combined with Cymbalta with mild benefits for about five years, but my goal is to get off those meds. A few months ago, I happened upon a podcast that Rachel had done and her methods of managing pain intrigued me because they had nothing to do with medications. I then found this book, and my view regarding my pain began to change. Give me a re-hab or assignment that I can work at to rid me of pain or disease and I'm all-in, so this workbook nailed it for me. Rachel's idea of 'turning the pain volume down' really caught me, and I've learned how to do just that. Mindfulness is a practice just like meditation or yoga, and it is something I practice every day to turn my pain volume down. If you are looking for pain relief that doesn't come in the form of a pill, then this book is for you. I highly recommend this workbook for anyone who is struggling with chronic pain that literally destroys your quality of life. I have fought too hard to survive up to this point, so I cannot let pain reduce my quality of life and neither can you. Thank you Rachel Zoffness for offering this amazing workbook for all of us.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2025After being diagnosed with a chronic nerve illness, my neurologist recommended this workbook. Since there’s no cure or real treatment plan for my condition, I needed something to help me manage pain holistically. This book does just that! It helps retrain your brain to cope with chronic pain, and while it’s not a magic fix, it’s a valuable tool for anyone dealing with long-term pain.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most important book you can get to recover
Rachel Zoffness is a brilliant pain psychologist, author and speaker. Her depth of understanding and extensive work and knowledge into the "biopsychosocial" allows the reader (chronic pain sufferer) to understand that pain is a construct of the mind, and that you can overcome it. The mind/body/surroundings are always connected, 100% of the time.
This is a must read/do CBT book, unlike any that has come before it.
