It's not fair!
The sounds are misbehaving and the children have to work extra hard to get them to do what they're supposed to do. L's run away and turn into W's; the Shhhh sound pops up all over and won't stay where it should; some sounds get stuck in odd places, and others play hide and seek.
Based on the lived experience of the author, who has speech sound disorders, this heartfelt story emphasizes patience and understanding. Full of tongue twisters, empathy, and fun, this uplifting book takes a fresh approach to living with speech differences.
The message is clear - you are not alone, we see how hard you're working, and there's no mistaking how we feel when we speak heart to heart.

Product description
About the Author
A funny thing happened after Sherry McMillan published her acclaimed book What The Seal Saw. Speech Language Pathologists started reaching out to tell her that they were using her book in their practices.
In connecting with her readers, she found that many of them, like her, had speech sound disorders. She was encouraged to write a book specifically for children with speech differences, and those who love and support them.
So she did!
My S's Are Messes is the book she wishes she'd had when she was a child.
Sherry McMillan is an author, speaker, technologist, and an avid kayaker.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Carla Maskall is an award winning artist who has been drawing and painting since she was a child. As a parent of a child with a speech difference, Carla was excited when Sherry approached her with this subject. Carla watched her child growing up struggling to communicate with the outside world and was very touched with Sherry's story.
My S's Are Messes is the book she wishes she'd had for her child.
Carla is very active in the arts community and especially loves working with children and seniors. Her work has been featured in multiple galleries, magazines, and books.

For anyone with speech difficulties :)
We LOVE this book, for so many reasons! The first being, that it is such an important story to tell: how tricky it can be to have speech difficulties, but that it is OK! Our students all need this story- those with speech difficulties, for the reminder that they are not alone. And for ALL of our students, to learn, to understand better, and to have empathy & compassion. We also loved the sing-song rhyming pattern, the cute characters, and the entertaining illustrations! This makes for a great read-aloud, and really allows listeners to 'feel' the letters and sounds getting away from you.We had the privilege of hosting Sherry at our school last year for her first picture book- and we can wholeheartedly say she is a delight! A warm & friendly author, who has an important story to share :)

Images in this review - Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2023This book is such a beautiful book that helps children know it's okay when our words and sounds don't do what we expect them to do. It offers such care in the lovely rhyme, helping children know they are not alone in the struggles, and that they are brave and strong to keep going when it's hard. It's comforting when it shares that there's many ways to communicate too. It's a book filled with love, support, and encouragement. It's a very special book!
