Margaret E. Anderson, aka “The Persuasion Coach,” helps people learn how to get what they need from others in ways that build bridges, rather than burning them. And guess what? The bridge-building method doesn’t mean lukewarm compromise. It actually wins you more of what you want than a competitive approach. An award-winning author of both non-fiction and fiction, Margaret has now mined the very best short stories and poetry she has written over the years for lessons on dealing with others, then, included both stories and lessons in this unique anthology. The stories:•In “Duet for Flute and Phantom,” the protagonist certainly doesn't settle for a loser, but her method of removing him from her life is far too extreme.•“What Would Help?” rewards a man who seems to be on the road to rejection until he proves that he understands what respect really means.•In "Can We Talk?" a promising couple places hurdles on the track to love by texting rather than talking.•“Dinner Date” is a poetic snapshot of how not to get a second date.•"The Package" features a young man who’d like to eradicate his girlfriend's aversion to routines and schedules, while she wishes he’d loosen up and be more spontaneous, but a crisis teaches them to appreciate the same traits that sometimes drive them crazy.•“Peaches” shows us a woman's mental and emotional journey to happily walking away from a man who jilted her.•In “Surprise.com,” a woman learns to value an exceptional man who’s not much to look at.•And in “You’ll Get over It,” our protagonist must not only deal with rejection by a man who doesn't appreciate her, but with even greater pain inflicted by a former friend.Readers can enjoy the fiction while also learning skills to apply in any situation, from your personal life to the business world.

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Learning productive discussion skills changed my life, inspiring me to switch careers to teach these skills to others. My sister told me I seem able to get a communication skills lessons out of anything. That inspired me to mine some short stories I had written for my own amusement. The result was this collection, with stories followed by lessons on what the characters did well, or could have done better, in the way of communication skills. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it!

I'm normally not a fan of short stories, but each of these tales contained characters whose traits I easily recognized in myself and in other people I know. The conflicts in each story were everyday ones experienced by thousands of humans, yet it seems we still can't figure out how to circumvent these disagreements or the puzzling behaviors they produce. Not to worry! At the end of each fictional encounter is a thorough, non-fictional explanation of why the characters acted as they did, and more importantly, tips on how they could have avoided their self-induced pain. This is a book those who are newly in love can learn from as well as one for those who have been in love with the same person for decades.

Margaret's stories made me smile. They also made me reflect on ways I can deal with a difficult situation. I especially liked the one about the couple who disliked each other's habits until they found they needed the differences! Now if I could just learn that my husband's habit of keeping every piece of paper he ever touches had a benefit in my life, I'd be set! But since that isn't likely to happen, I can recall the lessons of Love on the Rocks With a Twist that will help me be more patient and accepting. Thanks for the wisdom, Margaret!

Principled negotiations, persuasion, consensus building. Love on the Rocks with a Twist is delightfully informative and instructive. The pitfalls of interaction apply to the author's personal "stories" as well as the reader's take away in a more general sense. The study notes remind the reader that acceptance, understanding, or even a clean walkaway is always an alternative to plunging deeper into a burgeoning morass of adopting and defending a position. It all takes time, and Anderson allows the reader to arrive in time and hopefully on time to the end that shows us new possibilities. From the standpoint of business and/or personal relationships, purchase this book.

As a Unitarian Universalist, I was fortunate to have become a friend of Margaret through our Facebook network. In fact, while she was writing "Bridges to Consensus" I was among the volunteers who gave her feedback about how her "persuasion coach" strategies would work in our UU Congregation. That is why I was so delighted that Margaret was encouraged to write this novel. Not only will it appeal to her students at Rice University, but we all recognize ourselves in these situations regardless of our age and experience!

Delightful fiction, indeed! Each of the stories is a standalone pleasure. I especially enjoyed the well-crafted characters. I could easily relate to their feelings, responses, and situations. The story endings were often surprising, yet satisfying. I had previously read Ms. Anderson's excellent "Bridges to Consensus". "Love on the Rocks" helped me see how to apply those same good communication methods to my personal relationships. Her study notes enhance each tale, opening one's eyes to the interactional skills used by the characters.

A delightful twist on stories you read and move on .... these stories are jumping off places for guided contemplations of what happened in the story.

So, you have enjoyment and you get some self-enlightenment.

And trust me, you will see yourself in some of the stories because they are about the human condition.

And maybe, just maybe, you'll be a better, kinder, more genuine person because of the questions the book asks.

I've spent a lifetime reading stories, and I'm not easy to please. This little pocketful kept me pleasurably engaged all the way through. I love the way Anderson gets right to the meat of a situation with an economy of words and well placed spots of humor.
Not only do her stories entertain, they each also strike a chord that resonates with memories of my own turbulent relationships, reminding me that I'm not the only one who feels inept at times, or inconvenienced, or downright ticked off.
This is a great read. It's engaging and fun.
That said, I've always believed that we can learn much about real life from reading fiction, and Anderson gives us a bonus in the excellent "study notes" that briefly explain how the characters might have handled their situation differently for a better outcome. Even if I was not already knowledgeable of Anderson's teachings in her nonfiction book, Bridges to Consensus, I would have learned a few things from the study notes.
This is a book I'll read again.

I would have enjoyed this book even if it was just the short stories – which are entertaining and compelling in their own right – but the added study notes really do give this truly unique book that extra something. It made me stop and think about the stories in a different light (and from the perspectives of different characters), and of course it also made me apply these view points and lessons to the relationships in my own life. As a big fan of making lists and working through things step by step, I found the author's methods of how to make decisions regarding relationships (and how to come up with a plan depending on the outcome you want) truly insightful, and I shall definitely be using this in my own life! My favourite stories were 'Duet for Flute and Phantom', 'The Package' & 'Suprise.com'. Highly recommended!
