From Sound to Summary: Braiding the Reading Rope to Make Words Make Sense Paperback – January 7, 2024
Purchase options and add-ons
In this instructional guide, reading specialist Harriett Janetos provides a practical, hands-on teacher's manual to explain literacy practices in elementary school using illustrated lesson sequences from the classroom. The book reframes the Five Pillars of Reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension) through the strands of Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope. It draws upon the brain activation—hearing, speaking, seeing, understanding, remembering, and analyzing—involved in processing each of those strands as the subject of the six chapters. Specifically, hearing words builds vocabulary prior to schooling and beyond; saying words (slowly, especially while writing them) accesses and develops phonemic awareness; seeing words develops letter-sound (grapheme-phoneme) connections; understanding words bolsters text comprehension; remembering words facilitates automatic word recognition (orthographic mapping); and analyzing words in sentences and paragraphs promotes the ultimate goal of reading: making meaning from text. This reframing of the Big Five makes this guide different from other books that are based on the science of reading.
Although research is cited, the emphasis is on sample lessons related to this research in order to make it accessible to all teachers at all levels of experience.
Key features include:
- A brief recap of the research and recommendations
- An explanation of the research and its translation to teaching through step-by-step lessons
- A summary of how each chapter connects to the one before it and the ones to follow through an emphasis on braiding the strands of the Reading Rope
- A list of recommended resources, including a book, a blog, an article, a podcast, a webinar, a video, a website, and online training (sometimes more, depending on the chapter)
- Summary charts that consolidate the reading recommendations for quick access
- Colorful infographics that concisely capture the essence of reading components and processes
Everything is at your fingertips to guide and support you through your literacy lessons. Change is just a few simple steps away. This instructional guide to reading will help you follow these evidence-based steps to help you align your instruction with the science of reading.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024As a first grade teacher of 28 years, I’ve read more than my share of professional development books. From Sound to Summary stands out as one of my favorites. Janetos demonstrates a profound respect for educators' time by providing just the right amount of research to grasp foundational educational concepts before transitioning into actionable practices for the classroom. She references my favorite researchers and introduces a slew of new-to-me scholars.
Her approach mirrors brain-based learning principles, as seen in the organization of the book, which is structured to assist with comprehension and retention. One of the book's standout features is Janetos' skillful synthesis of research findings, offering educators clear guidance on what to teach (green lights), what to avoid (red flags), and areas in which research has not shown clear recommendations (gray areas). The inclusion of well-chosen visuals enhances comprehension, while the Golden Sentences at the end of each chapter serve as invitations to deepen understanding.
From Sound to Summary isn't just another professional development book; it's a precious resource for time-challenged teachers who need quality research at their fingertips. With ready-to-implement routines applicable regardless of adopted curriculum, this book empowers educators to take immediate actions in improving literacy development in their classrooms.

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2024Reading is about making meaning--about sampling enough of text to get to that meaning, or one of several meanings. All cueing systems are important; why would we want to discourage children from utilizing every tool at their disposal? As a long-time reading specialist and university professor, I am distressed to read texts based on one-sided research: nearly 80% of the references listed deal with decoding only; not a single reference is by one of the many reading researchers who emphasize the ultimate goals of reading: to understand, to critique, to enjoy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2024This book really delves into the areas of vocabulary development and retaining knowledge. Hearing, Speaking, Seeing, Understanding, Remembering and making sense of everything, are quite important in building patterns of better communication skills, while also delivering ways to foster greater brain activation. The author is very passionate over this subject, and brings tremendous expertise to really create a book that breaks down the art of analyzing sentences, and deciphering the individual nuances of language. Fully recommend this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2024Author Harriet Janetos’s book, “From Sound to Summary,” is a most helpful guide for teaching children to read and write. While the book is quite technical, there are concrete examples, anecdotes, and strategies that can be implemented in the classroom. The author’s writing exemplifies her deep passion , experience, education, and knowledge about supporting children’s reading a writing development in meaningful fun ways. I would hope she considers presenting and sharing more in person. This is a must read for teachers.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2024I am a 30-year veteran teacher of K-2, and I was given this book as a gift. I am so happy I was! This book is well-researched, comprehensive, easy to follow, and appropriate for any K-6 teacher. It combines the importance of phonics, phonemic awareness, and decoding with the “so then what” piece of what to do once kids are able to read.
There are lessons on how to teach reading, making sense of reading, vocabulary instruction, morphology, teaching multi-syllabic words, paragraph writing, and more. Included are websites, anchor charts, student samples, routines, word lists, an appendix with specific examples, and how to differentiate for many types of learners.
I have purchased many books on literacy over my career. This is not only a keeper, but one I will highlight, dog-ear, attach sticky notes to, and actually use in my 2nd grade classroom. I will also be recommending it to teacher colleagues. I only wish I had access to it earlier in my career.
