Celebration of Sisters: It Is Never Too Late to Grieve
Audible Audiobook
– Unabridged
For Judy Lipson, her sisters were her compass, constant, champions, and competitors and for 30 years, she suppressed the grief of losing her two beloved sisters.
Judy lost her younger sister, Jane, at age 22 in an automobile accident, and nine years later her older sister, Margie, at age 35 to a 20-year battle with anorexia and bulimia. It was not until 2011 that Judy began her journey to mourn for Margie and Jane.
Judy experienced the reality that those who lose siblings are the forgotten mourners and they are left to take care of their parents and children. The impact of their loss takes a back seat. Through her participation and work prescribed in a complicated grief study, Judy learned to restore her well-being, happy memories of her sisters, and the passion the three of them had for figure skating. By bringing her sisters and their memories together more present in her life, Judy found peace.
To honor the memory of her sisters, Judy created and continues to hold the Celebration of Sisters, an annual ice skating fundraiser which benefits Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. This is the story of how Judy used her memories and their shared love of ice skating to come full circle. When she performs on the ice, Judy feels Margie and Jane on each shoulder guiding her and whispering in her ear, "Judy, you've got this."
This is a story of love, grief, and moving forward, even years after the loss.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2022Wow! Amazing how a reader can relate to ones’ story when they’ve walked a similar journey. I can agree with what a previous reviewer has stated, “At some point in our lives, we’ll be affected by grief. It may be the loss of a loved one––a parent, a sibling, a relative, a friend, or even a favorite pet. We can’t know exactly how grief will affect us … until it does.” Those words were well-spoken! What's so comforting about it all is, “When walking the journey, no one walks alone.”
Readers, this is a heartfelt journey about one’s losses and her recovery to wellness. Confession time (for me) . . . . “Yes, there were tears shed while turning those pages of this beautiful story.” I won’t reveal to you the full details behind those pages. You MUST read this story for yourself. Nonetheless, I could feel this author’s raw emotions of reliving her journey through “Complicated Grief.” After having borne years of my own suppressed emotions, it was so relatable!
The brokenness, the heartache, the pain, the outbreak of those raw emotions, and much more, there are many who go into that space and never find their way back. But, to discover there is a new light, new hope, new joy, and a new “you,” make it all worth reliving. Judy has rebirth the lives of her losses and shared with her readers their precious gifts. This author has done a remarkable job of putting a reader in the moment. Isn’t that what memoirs are about? Judy, kudos, to you!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2022In her memoir, Judy Lipson tells about her family history and the much delayed grief experienced over the tragic loss of her two sisters, at separate times.
It will take over thirty years of denying her grief, much of it buried over time, before the author decides it's now time to face it, which she writes about in her book. That being said, due to the time between loss and writing about her personal pain, Lipson is honest throughout her book as she confesses, "I don't remember," or "I can't recall."
What I took away from this book is that Lipson is modeling for her audience that grief is a personal and individual experience and it does not have an expiration date. That "it is never too late to grieve."
- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2021An amazing story! I highly recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2024This is an amazing memoir, much more than a story about loss, mental health, and grieving. The title won me because a celebration is a joyous occasion. Judy Lipson writes from her heart while memorializing her two sisters. This honest and sincere story is full of details and anecdotes and her comforting words and gentle tone take you from page to page. So gentle you may cry (I did) as well as smile! Judy takes us to scenes about growing up in the 1950s-1960s (I found many parallels to my childhood – right down to walking a mile to school with other kids from our neighborhood). Judy's and her sisters' passion for ice skating adds another story arc and comes full circle at the end of the book. While there is much heartache as the writer comes to terms with unblocking memories and then finally grieving for her sisters, Judy has bravely completed a long journey and I was so happy for her that she now has peace and can move forward. The cover art is perfect for this story. I could not put the book down and read it in two sittings. It’s a book everyone -- especially those who have a sibling or two -- needs to read. Thank you, Judy!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2022What a lovely and moving story of true love. Anyone grieving will appreciate the heartfelt honesty of this book. And to all figure skaters, this story captures the true essence of the power of the ice to heal and of the warm and loving skating community. I learned of this book having met Judy at an adult skating camp, and I only wish that I would have read this before I got to know her- amazing woman and amazing story of courage and love.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2022I truly loved this book and could relate to so much of Judy’s stories. While death brings feelings and memories of other death, I still found so much comfort in her words. There were stories that made me laugh and ones that made me cry but mostly it made me really want to go hug my sister, and buy a copy for my mom who lost her sister. A+ read.. highly recommended
