From acclaimed and award-winning financial adviser Ric Edelman comes a modern-day fable in the spirit of The Ant and the Grasshopper that teaches kids—and their parents—the value of spending money, saving for the future, and giving to charity.

Financial habits form early. Children learn by observing a parent’s behavior and through their own experiences. That’s why it’s important to make sure your children are treating money the right way. From allowances and birthday money to cash they’ll one day earn babysitting or mowing lawns,
The Squirrel Manifesto provides a platform to set your children on the path to a lifetime of fiscal responsibility.

Just as a squirrel gathers nuts to prepare for the winter—eating some now and storing some for later—kids can learn the value of money by spending some of their allowance now and saving the rest for later using animals as examples.

Wonderful Message for Young Children

Wonderful Message for Young Children
The Squirrel Manifesto is a delightful read, complete with beautiful illustrations and a valuable lesson! As a parent, what I love most is that it provides the perfect opportunity to start talking to our kids (even at a very young age) about smart spending habits, the importance of saving...and giving back! There's even a guide for grown-ups in the back. I love giving books as gifts for all the little ones in my life and I'll do that for sure with this one.

To me the easy-to-read "Guide for Grown-Ups" at the end is a prerequisite for parents, prior to reading with (or to) the children. It explains easy ways to help guide children through the story to learn some things about character as well as personal finance. The illustrations are so beautiful that they themselves offer opportunity for discussions with the kids. For most parents this will be a perfect book to read TOGETHER with the children. Reading aloud for them will give parents opportunity to relate the solid financial and social concepts to children....and at a child's level of understanding. They will soon be turning the pages and re-reading on their own! We as little children DO learn good things (as well as new words) through stories and even fables, pictures and narration. Well, maybe parents need to read with their children more these days. Fascinating and impressive information about Dave Zaboski the illustrator at the end of the book. Finally: So many adults and children in our country are sadly lacking in personal finance abilities. It's becoming disastrous. Children need a better and observable foundation at home for financial responsibility, in preparation for adulthood. Very good book, thank you Ric Edelman and Jean Edelman!

This is, hands-down, one of the best of the new children’s books. First, the pictures are stunning and can tell their own stories they are so striking and creative. Kudos to illustrator Zaboski and the hidden surprises. Second, the rhyming flows and is a pleasure to read out loud. The authors gently help children step into a friendly, busy community and landscape that will both awe and charm your youngsters. They’ll want to echo your words if they don’t read yet. Third, the financial lessons? Clever to use squirrels as teachers. Especially the squirrel with his cheeks stuffed full of nuts – just right and hilarious. And I can’t think of a more ridiculously perfect way to teach about money.

So, yes, some other commenters are right; there are a few words that will need to explained, starting with “manifesto”, but I don’t see them as overwhelming and it’s never too soon to introduce a few new words. Step forward, not backward. A suggestion for the authors/publishers; for future books please apply the marvelous writing skills in the story to the book description, too. The current one doesn’t do justice to a remarkable experience that inserts a life lesson in the most charming way. (This librarian loved the book.)

It was a fabulous book. It truly did show and teach children,as well as adults, of how we should treat each other and the world by showing kindnesses. It also taught children lessons in life.
The illustrations are wonderful and very colorful and kept my grandchildren interested in the story. Bought 3 books already.
Thank you Ric and Jean Edelman for writing such a fantastic book.

I really enjoy Ric Edelman’s work, and this book is no exception. Great kids book. The art is just fantastic; beautiful rich watercolor illustrations. Very engaging and eye catching. Good message, good story, well delivered.

One star down for the clunky poetry. The rhyming was fine, but the rhythm and meter of each phrase was off beat. Honestly I think this book would have worked better with straight prose instead of poetry. Or it could have been edited by a poet. Ymmv.

Fantastic book with a fantastic message, check it out.

The book is written and illustrated beautifully, My husband bought this for our 8yr. old granddaughter to teach her the value of money. To use and invest it wisely. They say down and she read the book to him and then they talked about it. They also talked about the way the book was written and illustrated. It was a bonding moment. My granddaughter is very smart and my husband worked wall street at one time, he is very interested in money shows and investing and he is trying to instill this in our granddaughter for her future, if there is going to be one for her.

I love this book and the message but unfortunately it did not pass to my kids

Excellent, beautifully illustrated and concise and informative book about handling money. We gave this to our grandson with a monetary gift. Suggested that before he read the book he write down how what he wanted to do with the money. Read the book. Make another list. Compare. His list had changed to include donation to a homeless shelter.

I love that this book can not only teach children that they need to save some money, but also introduces the concepts of paying taxes and charitable donations, as well as spending money on yourself. It’s a cute story and is subtle about what to do with their nuts (money), but parents can talk about the book with older children who will understand. For younger kids, just read and enjoy!
