It could happen to you. It happened to the girl next door…

When Theresa was 15 she moved to a new school and fell for an older pupil, Daniel. Theresa was thrilled when one afternoon he asked if he could drive her home. But this simple decision would hold her captive as a sex slave for two long years.

Daniel was part of a criminal ring that bribed and trafficked Theresa out of her own house, unknown to her parents. Theresa would go to school alongside these boys in the day and be called into service at night.

Heart-rending, shocking and totally gripping
The Slave Across the Street is the incredible true story of how an ordinary girl was lured into the sinister world of human trafficking – and how she eventually escaped and rebuilt her life.

What an eye opening and terribly sad book. Very well written

I heard Theresa speak at an awareness seminar and am amazed that she has been able to heal from her experience and use it to help others. This book is definitely worth the read.

I am a CASA... court appointed special advocate... we are assigned by the court to work closely with a child or family that has suffered abuse or neglect. This book explains how the perpetrator gains a hold on their victim and the trauma suffered. It’s very well written and I have passed it on to be read by others.

This is a horrifying book but one I couldn't put down. It made me very angry. Thank God we usually we get away with it when we make a rash decision as teenagers but Theresa didn't. The outcome for her was horrifying beyond belief. It makes me feel ill how cruel people can be

Very chilling book - I hesitate to say "story" because I don't want to denigrate this girl. Very important lessons to be learned in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story of victim to survivor to thriver
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2020
Anyone who questions why Theresa didn't just walk away from this insidious situation needs their head examined. This book smashes the myth that it's only a certain type of vulnerable young person who can be targeted by evil people. In fact, some of what made Theresa vulnerable to these creatures is exactly what we, as parents, subconciously install in our kids; not wanting to disappoint parents, a love so strong and loyal that the child can't bear to hurt the parent by letting them know what's going on, a fear of messing up, discouraging vanity (which I agreed with entirely until I read this book - i now realise what is required is balance where vanity is concerned). An absolute must read for anyone with children, written by a true warrior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Human Trafficking Exposed
Reviewed in Australia on September 24, 2014
The gruelling tale of a young girl, barley into her teens, being coerced into sexual slavery to seemingly protect her family. All this happening while leading an apparently normal like at school and at home. If it happened in your neighbourhood would you recognise the signs. If you did, would you do anything about it. The author did by, surviving, and writing this book. She describes the PTSD that followed, and the empowering actions taken to bring more awareness in the community.

A long, horrific read, that I left for a while. Rather than abandoning the read, I persisted, and am glad that something positive came out of her experience. Suicide didn't seem an option for her. There is a worse story in my unread stack, which I need to get back to and see how it ends.

The story. I hope it will help other young people in that situation. I hope that that Theresa will have happiness with her children for the rest of her life.
