American Government
Really. This isn’t going to hurt at all . . .
If you’ve hated every book on government you’ve ever had to open, get ready for a pleasant surprise! This book explains the functions of the United States Government by using down-to-earth examples, adding a touch of humor, and demonstrating that exercising your citizens’ rights can be a very satisfying experience. You’ll also learn about political parties, how public policy is created and shaped, and how each citizen can become involved in the process of self-government.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021I’ve used this book in homeschool for two high school students. My son with ADHD excelled with Painless Government. The information is in small bites, easily understood and interesting. I’m currently using it as a high school course for a reluctant student. Because the information is in small bits and then just a few questions, it gives the student the necessary course material for graduation.

I purchased Painless Earth Science, History, Study Techniques, Grammar, Life Science, American Government, Spelling, Pre-Algebra, & Geometry for my daughter to help prepare her for high school. She hated me for weeks, but this series has tremendously helped her with her transition from middle school to an advanced magnet academy for high school. These books are one of the best educational tools I have ever purchased. By week 2 she was excited to show me what she had learned each day. We will fortunately be using these for my son when he is old enough to use them.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2017It's very straight forward. No frills, but it has plenty of additional projects to use to enhance each section. In researching the book, I saw it listed as a high school book, but the back of the book states it's geared towards middle school. We used it for high school anyway and it worked out fine. My homeschool student liked the format.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2023I have used this when teaching a government class at our homeschool co-op. Found it to be fair and balanced. Was concerned the newer edition would be woke or left leaning especially when addressing the past few years of political craziness. Pleasantly surprised and the updates were great! Highly recommend!!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2017I bought this to read so I can learn more about the US government as well as help my 9th grade daughter. This book covers the essentials without being weighed down by too much detail. This enables the reader to keep focused on the big picture concepts and more important facts. It's fun to read. Little tests throughout the text provide an entertaining way to check your knowledge.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2017I got this for my seven years old daughter who has been asking a lot of political questions, due to the news. Sure we could look stuff up online but I was hoping she'd take it and run with it. For now, she is using it as a reference source. It makes it painless to dig for information and easily answer a question. Maybe someday she'll read it straight through. ;-) In the meantime, its fun to hear my little news-junkie use "oligarchy" properly in a sentence.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2013BUT... it says it's for middle school grades, I would suggest it's more early high school level. There is a lot of good basic information about how our government is set up, but it definitely puts a liberal slant on a lot of it. The "self-check" type exercises that are scattered through the chapters are set up to check just the past few pages of reading. There is not really any overall reviews or things that build upon the past readings. The reading level is definitely somewhat higher than typical middle school.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 14, 2012This book is great. This is not college material. It was designed for those who weren't paying attention in school, well, they were paying attention to the clock with one ear cocked for the bell, but certainly not the teacher. Now, you're feeling a sense of adult responsibility thinking "How can I not know more about my own government?" In a succinct, straightforward, unembellished and pretty much politically unbiased format (chapter summaries and questions included for reinforcement), this will get you on board with the origin, evolution, structure and function of our government.

4.0 out of 5 stars
