This book although fiction does depict how hard life was for soldiers in the war. It shows the death of friends, the poor food, worn out clothing. My only complaint was a soldier from TN, the author wrote his words as it would have sounded with an Appalachian mountain accent. I found those words hard to read. But the book is a worthwhile read
