Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This entry in the National Geographic Kids series gives young children abbreviated facts about Washington and the early days of the fledgling new country he led. It sweeps briefly from his childhood, through the Revolutionary War and his service as America’s first president, and finally into his retirement and death, providing children with facts for those “first reports” about Washington. Yet, interjected are pages containing facts about life during this time period and “Cool Facts about George” that tend to detract from the flow of his life. Short sentences, a large font, extensive white space, and multiple illustrations make the book accessible but uninspiring. No chronology, related books, or documentation are provided. Grades K-1. --J. B. Petty

I love the National Geographic Readers. As a teacher, there is so much I can do with the books to enhance reading skills. There are a number of the readers that are biographical and they are written in a format that younger kids can read. There are different levels of these books but I like this particular one. I have used them with good second grade readers, 3rd and 4th. They are great for pointing out nonfiction elements such as Table of Contents, In dex, Photos, Maps, Illustrations, Diagrams, Captions, and Headings. They are very colorful and contain real pictures that add so much to the interest. They often have a glossary and key vocabulary words. There are a number of these books so it is easy to do some compare and contrast discussions about the key characters.

Great book to introduce George to Kindergarten and higher. There are many facts but in large print. I did not read all the facts but I read most to my kindergarten class. They all know who our 1st president is!:)

My 8 year old daughter loves George Washington. I originally brought it for her book report to cut out pictures and facts but she loved the book soo much that she didn't want to cut it at all! Great read for kids.

I've never had a bad book from this series. They all are written with any gory/violent details of the person's life nicely worded such that the little ones don't get scared, but the books still convey what the person went through to become worthy of his/her own book. The illustrations and nice because it helps the little ones figure out what is going on even if they can't read all the words.
