Father, Son, and Soldering Gun: Stories That Forge Us Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

5.0 5.0 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Do you embrace your life and how you came to be who you are today? While that can sometimes be painful, it could be the most powerful thing you ever do. Witness this power through the legacy of Victor Mycynek (1943-2004).

Victor-an engineer, craftsman, and forestry enthusiast-was not a politician, celebrity, CEO, or business owner. He wasn't an artist or in the military. He didn't live through the era of social media influencers. Still, just by being himself, he inspired the richest and fullest life possible for many who knew him. It would be an understatement to say he used his time well.

Victor's son, Steven, proves through stories about his father, some happy or sad, some funny or just plain odd, that accepting who you are and where you came from, quirks and all, can unleash an awesome force to impact the world around you for the better. Following Victor's example, we all can learn to use our time well.

Part memoir, part musings on fatherhood. Funny and a little sad. I read this a few weeks ago and find myself reflecting on the stories in quiet moments. It got me thinking about how to share who I am with my daughter, and wondering how she will remember me when I'm gone, and how she'll remember me to others. It's good.

This is a great little book. More importantly, it’s a great story! This is a celebration of fathers and sons. I started following Steven on Instagram awhile back, and became very interested when he hinted he was going to be publishing a book about his relationship with his father. I too am somewhat of a geek, but I’m considerably older than Steven. I was very close to my dad, who also had the same DIY leanings as the elder Mycynek, so I eagerly awaited the book’s publication. It doesn’t disappoint—well-written, at times really sad and at times hilarious. Which makes sense since, among his other talents, Steven is a standup comic. The chapter called “The No-shaking Section” alone is worth the price of admission. If you’re a dad, a son, or a husband it’s the best ten dollars you’ll ever spend! I have only one gripe, and it's minor—I wish there were more photos... I know he has them!

Father, Son and Soldering Gun: Stories That Forge Us was a quick and satisfying read. The author balanced just the right mix of philosophical introspection with lovely vignettes. It is the portrait of a unique and complex father, with a universal mix of love and sorrow that will resonate with anyone who has lost a parent. I especially appreciated the thoughtful love that fills each page and the clean, refined writing style.

I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys memoirs, has an engineer in their life, or who has lost a parent.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-read tale about father and son relationship

Father, Son, and Soldering Gun" is a deeply moving memoir that centers around the author's relationship with his father and the profound impact it had on his life and the lives of many around them. Narrated in the first person, the book is beautifully written, flowing effortlessly and peppered with inspirational quotes. It's a perfect pick for those who enjoy immersive storytelling.

I found myself barely holding back tears at several points. This isn't to say the book is overly sentimental, but certain chapters, like "Pinewood Derby" and "The Last Movie," struck a particularly deep chord with me, reminiscent of the emotional depth in Tim Burton's "Big Fish." Perhaps it's because I too am a son with a notable father, or maybe it's my perspective as a father myself—I'm not entirely sure. It's evident the author's father played a significant role in shaping his life, instilling in him a love for science and professional discipline. From this aspect, the book also serves as an insightful guide for those aspiring to be great fathers. The examples of quality time the father spent with the author and his sister highlight the importance of nurturing meaningful relationships with one's children.
