The Woman in Me

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Emerging radiant through the chaos . . . in Britney Spears’s memoir, she’s stronger than ever. . . . [It's] presented so cleanly and candidly that The Woman in Me seems designed to be read in one sitting. It’s nearly impossible to come out of it without empathy for and real outrage on behalf of Spears, whose admitted bitterness over the dire circumstances of the last decade-plus of her life . . . is tempered by an enduring, insistent optimism."The New York Times

“Moving."
Time

"Powerful in its vividness . . . much has been made of the 'bombshell' revelations from this memoir . . . but vastly more interesting are the quiet revelations about herself. . . . Spears has always been funny and so unequivocally herself, even when recounting her mistreatment by most of the men in her life. . . . You can sense Spears gaining her power back, inch by inch.
The Woman in Me is a worthy act of self-resurrection." Los Angeles Times

“Breathtaking.”
The Independent (UK)

“A miracle.”
The Guardian (UK)

“Poignant.”
Vogue

“Britney Spears holds nothing back in her short, bittersweet, and extremely powerful memoir. . . . A testament to Spears’s essential fortitude of spirit—something that burns off these pages.”
The Telegraph (UK)

The only memoir I'd ever read
5 Stars
The only memoir I'd ever read
Ive always been a Britney fan since I was a child. The very first CD I ever owed was her baby one more time album. I'm was so elated to finally be able to read her story. I devoured this book in just under 4 hours without putting it down once. There has always been a light around Britney, she's mesmerizing. Every celebrity always speaks about her kindness. After all that she has been through she's still held onto her kind demeanor. I cried a few times and felt very empathic of her pain, over not being able to see her children when her divorce was happening. The mental breakdown was heartbreaking. I hope she is able to mend the bridge with her sons. If anything to take away from the book is that even at her darkest hour her children were always her number one. There is obviously a lot trauma and abuse she went through at all ages of life, but the stages of conservatorship was hard to read through. Yes, she may have been spiraling during 2007-2008, but her family took advatage of the situation. Instead of getting her on the right path and really helping her get her life right and kids back, they basically made her a prisoner and only viewed her as their cash cow. Trusting the wrong people was always her biggest downfall. She has such a big heart and the betrayal from all sides she endured was crazy. If I were her I wouldn't talk to my family ever again either, especially her father and mother. From her childhood stories alone, they are the ones that needed therapy. Jamie Lynn just sounds so spoiled and self entitled. She acted oblivious to what was really going on with her sister, and just kept riding the gravy train. Even though she complained about what Britney had given her family so she could have a better childhood than the one Britney grew up in. Her mother Lynn has zero parenting skills. She is just one of those parents who push their kids to become trophy children, so she could live through their accomplishments, reap the benefits, and accolades that comes with it, due to her own life failures. It's extremely sad. Her dad is just the absolute worst human being ever, and the things he did to her over the last 13 years is simply cruel and unimaginable. There is a lot more to her story than just the bad. I found some chapters very light and funny. She talks about her early childhood, other family members, finding fame, relationships, tours, performances, and also expresses things she wishes she had done differently in her first few years of fame. I'm still reeling from her Chicago role turn down. One of my favorite movies, and Britney would have crushed it. Overall a very good read.

This book is eye opening, heartbreaking, and honest. Britney doesn’t narrate the whole audiobook, just the prologue, which is understandable. She even mentioned it would have been too hard to read. Mad respect.

This story was genuine. I could practically hear Britney’s voice (even listening to Michelle William’s excellent narration) throughout the book.

Some of my key takeaways and thoughts:

(1) Britney had a rough childhood. No, her family isn’t perfect…no family is…but it speaks to the times amd how families were years ago which is unfortunate. I haven’t and still don’t think very highly of her family. I know there are two sides of the story but dang…family shouldn’t act that way. Looking at you Lynn and Jamie Lynn. You should have done better. Way better. Not even going there with her dad.

(2) Justin is not innocent. Being a man in the music industry, he got away with ALOT. Not surprised though. Again, there are two sides to every story and I respect that but I can’t see past the unfair treatment. Really Justin…a text message break up!? And the Cry Me A River video!? The shaming narrative you created?? Not cool dude. I know he apologized a long time ago but he really should come forward again and address this.

(3) Shame on Kevin (K-Fed). He used Britney for fame. He also used her kids against her.

(4) Britney is goofy and unique. I have always known that and I love love love that about her. She also addresses some of her more recent Instagram posts and that made me look at things differently.

I keep seeing that people wanted more from Britney and this book…why!?!? This woman lays out everything. She handles it with grace and even provided perspective and will call out when she was wrong!

Again, I can “hear” her words and her story. This doesn’t feel made up or dishonest. The details of major events are spot on. Everything lines up in my eyes.

Kudos to Britney for stepping forward and telling her story. I am sorry you went through all of this. You are strong. You are incredible. Most people wouldn’t be here, alive, after this type of control and this type of life.

I am a Britney supporter always.

"Woman" is a wonder. Though it's a quick read it's also utterly riveting and fascinating. It's tragic that a woman that has given the world so much through her art had her freedom to live a somewhat normal life stolen from her by her father, a first-rate creep if there ever was one. The rest of her family doesn't sound all that wonderful either. It sounds like she's finding peace by the end of the book and I truly hope she does. I understand that this book is primarily about her trials and tribulations but I wish she would have shared more of her artistic career, mainly the albums. One of my favorites, "Circus" wasn't mentioned at all. I could have done with more of this and less of the many iterations of Mr. Federline and other scumbags' wrongdoings. All in all, I loved the (handsome hardcover book version) of "The Woman in Me".

I'm only a third way in. Shipped lightening fast.

The print quality of the book is very good. I like the rose and the purple foil, they captured her taste here and will look bomb on my bookshelf.

As for the writing it's good. Amazing, no. But they painted an incredible picture of her life. Much better writing than I thought to be honest. I was expecting more scattered blurbs throughout the book but the way it's presented does honor her experience, and sounds like her up to an extent. Now, I do think the ghost writer went verbose in some areas that were unnecessary which derailed her voice in my head but I imagine getting the whole picture would be difficult.

I was hoping for a thicker book as she's been through a lot. So I am a bit disappointed at that but nevertheless it's an interesting read thus far.

As for Britney's life story. I have to say they were smart in starting with her lineage and she didn't hold back keeping her family accountable from the gate. Good on her for having conviction.

I suddenly found myself understanding little quirks, connecting the dots, certain things would suddenly click in my head. For example her British accent and her relationship with a lynchpin matriarch elder.

Very cool build up. Laying the ground work for her future decisions by presenting us with complex childhood family dynamics really has me understanding her choices and quirks much better than I ever realized I needed to be deep in thought of.

Sometimes we judge from a place of pity or outsider perspective instead of compassion. Now I see the soft gentle feminine side of her mindset that we knew when she was younger start to peek through the pages. It's that sweet part of her soul that she doesn't show much nowadays, for good reason of course as she's been deeply hurt and damaged by other's greed, but that delicate nature is part of why most of us were charmed by her. I hope she finds her way back one day.

She's been through a lot and I found myself relating to things she'd been through, and feeling deeply saddened by her sense of insecurity in childhood. Her insights correlate along with many of my own life experiences and traumas. I was taken aback by her growth in reflection, as one would believe anger would be the easy way to portray her story, not the case here, it's her appreciation for her past that has earned my deep respect beyond what I thought I had possessed prior to reading.

Her story with her brother was touching and softened my distain for his participation in the matter of handling her affairs. Although I hope he is held accountable someday. It shows how loving and innocent she was and how grave a loss she has suffered, for it is those who are selfless that don't speak up only to suffer the most.

Such a contrast to the presentation of her character in the media. Thus far this book is an excellent read!

------ To be Continued

* I'm looking forward to reading through this book in it's entirety and will update when I'm done. One star for the writing not sounding like her in some places. I will change accordingly.

I had no idea the extent of the abuse she faced. She is incredible. She is going to help so many others spot the signs and find courage to leave bad situations and relationships. She shed light on the entertainment industry and power and control. Shows the evil of civilization when it comes to putting the almighty dollar above human life. I think it was well written, easy to read and captivating.
