So True a Love (Proper Romance Regency) Kindle Edition
London, 1803
As the daughter of a renowned actress, Verity Travers is a privileged lady of high society —and the last woman one would suspect of working as a private investigator. But after one case nearly costs her everything, she makes the hard decision to hang up her hat and live the uninspiring life of a gentlewoman. However, when she and her dearest friend become victims of a harrowing armed robbery, Verity finds herself swept back into the clandestine world of mystery and crime as she seeks to bring the thief to justice. There’s just one complication: the persistent and dashingly handsome Bow Street Runner Nathaniel Denning, who always seems to cross her path.
Verity is confident she could accomplish her work quickly if only Nathaniel would stay out of her way. While she appreciates his keen mind and quick wit on a case, his interference is muddling her progress—and her heart. Focusing on the task at hand becomes more and more difficult as she constantly bumps into Nathaniel, who is determined to keep her out of danger.
When the two rival investigators learn they are both pursuing the same cunning criminal, they must figure out how to navigate the delicate dance of cooperation amid a backdrop of increasing peril and an irresistible passion that sets their hearts ablaze.

About the author
Joanna Barker firmly believes that romance makes everything better, which is why she has fallen in love with writing Regency romances. When she’s not typing away on her next book, you’ll find her listening to podcasts, eating her secret stash of chocolate, or adding things to her Amazon cart. She thinks being an author is the second-best job in the world—right after being a mom. She is just a little crazy about her husband and three wild-but-lovable kids.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024Joanna Barker did it again! 😍 This novel is the perfect combination of Regency, mystery, suspense, and romance! While this does operate as a stand-alone novel, this story follows Verity Travers who we originally met in the novel A Heart Worth Stealing. When I discovered Verity was getting her own story I couldn’t have been more ecstatic!
Verity Travers portrays a beautifully flawed woman with passions and gifts that fit outside the standards of proper society. Having been born out of wedlock, the whispers from society and the rejection from her father stain her deeper than perhaps she even realizes. We see a beautiful depth to her character that grows as the story progresses. Her insecurities marked by her obscure birth and somewhat different upbringing hold her back in some areas while propelling her forward in others. Her loyalty to her family and her friends is endearing. I love how Miss Barker gave us views and insights into her insecurities and how they shaped her and her decisions - especially when the likes of handsome Nathaniel Denning throw a monkey wrench into her carefully crafted (and closed off) future!
Possible spoiler alert? I try hard not to write spoilers into reviews but this IS a romance novel, amiright?! I would think it is obvious that love factors into the equation. I just want to say that I love when the guy falls first in a romance novel! *insert swoon here* Nathaniel Denning is a tender, quiet, and passionate man who seems to know how to say all the right things at just the right time - and I don’t think this is a bad thing at all. 😂 His perceptive ability not only aids his career as a Bow Street Runner but also goes a long way in helping him break down the carefully constructed walls Verity had placed up around her heart. He was certainly the right man for the job and their interactions were such a PLEASURE to read! 😍 I also dearly loved the scene in which we meet Nathaniel’s parents. 🥰
In conclusion: So True A Love is an amazing, clean, swoony, mysterious, suspenseful read filled with enough action and intrigue to keep you reading from cover to cover!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025What is not to love with these characters?
They are both compelling and interesting. The author weaves a world around them that draws in the reader with mystery and danger. I also enjoyed the sub mysteries that bound the characters.
I loved the way both hero and heroine are drawn to make the world better. I also liked how they saw the good in each other and allowed them to be themselves, but better for each other.
The whole book kept me interested as they solved the mystery as well as a the clean romance.
This book is “related” to “A Heart Worth Stealing” and both are great reads! (Each are standalone)
I hope the author writes more of this genre!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2024This was a sweet story with romance and mystery.
Reminded me so much of the PBS series Miss Scarlet and The Duke.
Nathaniel was swoon worthy!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2024A beautiful love story wrapped in just enough intrigue to keep me turning the pages when I should have been turning off the light. Nathaniel makes a charming hero whose past so obviously shaped his manners and decisions. Verity could have easily been too-stupid-to-live, but each action she took was driven by her love and caring for others. From the first time they bumped into each other, I loved the chemistry between them.
Excellent story. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2024Joanna Barker really knows how to develop and write a sweet romance! I never feel like her characters just happen to fall in love because they were with someone for a day. There's true chemistry and depth of character, and I love it all! I loved Verity and her strength, but also watching her tear down her walls. There were twists I wasn't expecting, and the resolution was satisfying. Thoroughly enjoyed!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2024Joanna Barker has done it again! I have been so excited for Verity's story since my reread of A Heart Worth Stealing, and it was worth the wait!
This book has it all. A theft, an adorable meet-cute, a mystery, action, and the sweetest romance!
Verity wants to be a thief taker, just like her brother Jack. She is fiesty and determind, and I just love her!
Nathaniel is a Bow Street Runner, and he is just the best. He's kind and patient with Verity, and so protective from the start.
And there's a hand-holding scene that is SO much better than the famous hand-flex we all love. 😍
This works as a stand-alone, but I would read A Heart Worth Stealing first because it's amazing too!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2024Enthralled from the first page. Thought I had figured out the mystery, but was wrong. A lovely group of characters I look forward to seeing again. I want more!
