Review

"The Beast Hunters, by Christer Lende, is the fun tale of Ara, a young girl whose family is killed by a monster. She is rescued from the same fate by a pair of strange Beast Hunters who take her on as a sort of unofficial apprentice." - dominish_books

"Packed with spirit, imagination and adventure,The Beast Hunters is a fantasy lover's dream, just waiting to be explored! Ingenious and original creatures inhabit the pages and populate your subconscious as you discover the unique beasts in Ara's exciting world, including beneficial iron snails, loyal gnurgles, charming shinies, murderous spikers, and dreaded heartflies, critters that lay eggs in the mouths of unfortunate people and, eventually, feed off their hearts." - Indies Today

"The Beast Hunters is a thrilling read from start to finish. Christer Lende weaves together such a fantastic and compelling tale." -
Beth

"Christer Lende's The Beast Hunters is an enjoyable fantasy book that will appeal to a wide readership. It has clearly been written out of love for stotytelling, because it's delightfully fresh and enticing." -
Risingshadow

"I'm really glad to have found this book, and to pick it by the cover, because it hasn't let me down, being absolutely amazing (I only have one complaint: it's too short), a novel that I would define as The Witcher meets Sherlock Holmes. There are so many things to love on these pages, to be fair." -

Christer Lende began writing in a library, which sounds fitting, only he was supposed to be there working on his engineering degree. He's a professional screenwriter, working with the Norwegian movie producer behind “One Love”, “Who Killed Birgitte” and “All about my Father” Bjørn Eivind Aarskog. Together they are developing the manuscript for a Norwegian thriller. Bjørn hired Christer after reading The Beast Hunters, trusting Christer could bring his vision to life. Christer lives in what Norwegians call a city, but people from actual cities would call a town. Of proud Viking blood, he honours his ancestors by heroically sitting in front of a computer writing Fantasy and Science Fiction books. He believes in writing a little bit every day, through weekends, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, even his own birthday. When he’s not writing, he takes care of his two dogs and tries to broker peace with his girlfriend. He’s often found at a gym, trying to compensate for his height issues, or lazily playing video games.

Monster Fantasy/ Mystery
This was such a fun and unique read! It was filled with adventure, found family trope, high stakes fights, characters who are more than what they seem, and two mysteries! This was like a fantasy mystery. I always have a favorite character in any book I read but in this one I honestly can't choose. Khendric- who is the older, wiser, beast hunter, Topper- his young apprentice who tries to comes up with clever little sayings and who is also super kind, or Ara- the rescued orphaned teenager who balances out their trio, and is eager to learn and escape her horrible past!Plus all three characters are a lot more than what they seem! They really are a group that makes the reader long to join them in their adventures.I really enjoyed the beast descriptions! They were surprisingly intricate in detail. The two mysteries in the book were really fun too, I found myself trying to figure them out even though they were most likely creatures I had never heard of! And they were both surprise twists!I can't wait to read book two!

The Beast Hunters is one of those rare but fantastic Fantasy novels that can be enjoyed by anyone. I cannot tell you how many times I thought, “OMG! This book is GREAT! Hans (my husband) and Garion (my 11 year old son) need to read this! They would love it!” There are just so many amazing and wonderful aspects to this story. There are a ton of crazy cool creatures/beast, enough death and fighting to intrigue those readers who enjoy action and battles, but the overall tone of the story is light enough to avoid extreme amounts of angst or anxiety. I absolutely adore how Lende was able to incorporate certain types of storylines, for example abuse victim mentality, but was able to portray it in a way that was both completely believable and yet extremely relatable. The mental battles, as well as, the physical battles the characters wage in this story are excellently written and I appreciated how well done it was.

At 17, Ara spends her days doing chores, running errands and taking mental, as well as, physical blows from her father. After a tragic accident some years before, her parents and her life have never been the same. But when a vicious beast attacks her home, leaving both her parents dead, Ara finds herself being rescued by two friendly, but extremely strange men. They call themselves Beast Hunters and Ara finds herself being drawn into their world of crazy beast and unimaginable creatures. Now she must decide whether to become their newest apprentice or search for a new life somewhere else. But as strange happenings and vicious murders begin to take place around them Ara realizes her decision may be made for her.

The two Beast Hunters were perfectly written! They were extremely compassionate (and if you know me at all you know I enjoy a well written compassionate character). But they were also fierce and knowledgeable and able to take on the wickedest of foes. I, also, really really enjoyed Ara. Her mental battles where extremely well written and believable and I loved how Lende was able to portray that aspect of her personality without causing the reader tons of anxiety. He wrote her extremely strong, compassionate, and overall very relatable.

Another thing I found extremely enjoyable in this book were the acknowledgments before the book started (which I found beyond hilarious…how do I get my name among them?! Lol) and the Beastiary at the end of the book that served as a glossary of the different types of beast. Both added some fun and interesting aspects to the book, other than the story itself. So don’t miss out on exploring either one!!!

So if you love a fabulous story with a ton of cool beasts and creatures to discover, enough battles and danger to intrigue any reader, amazing characters that were compassionate, honorable, and loyal, enough mystery and intrigue to keep you on the edge of your seat and searching for the next great secret, and is perfect for any reader of almost any age or gender, than you Simply MUST Read The Beast Hunters!

I found this book a quick, easy and super fun read. It’s quite short but the author packs a lot in to the small page count. The world building is fairly light but the detail given to the bestiary and the descriptions we get as the characters go along is wonderful and definitely one of the highlights of the book for me.

Even though the story focuses on some well known concepts I found them all fleshed out really well and the author puts his own spin on things. I’m always a fan of the Master-Apprentice vibe in any story and it’s fun here because Ara is quite an unlikely candidate in my mind for a hunter in the beginning. There’s a great amount of camaraderie and humour too. The characters all stood out on their own and had great backstories. I liked the way Ara’s emotional trauma from her hard upbringing was dealt with too.

The only things I would have liked more of was a bit more depth to Khendric and Topper, but I got the feeling that will be coming in the next book. And the cover made it seem like there might be some bigger beasts. That hopefully is coming too.

If you are looking for a fun read you can devour in a couple of days, then this one is recommended by me!

Can't wait to read the next one! The reading went along smoothly. Sometimes a book will hang in one spot to long hung up on to many details. This book gave details needed to move forward and not to many. Great job!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's got some great worldbuilding and some really fascinating monsters, I was really invested in the characters and this trio of beast hunters kept on surprising me with their unexpected backstories and hints at even more. So, why did I give it three stars?

Unfortunately, even though 98% of this book was a wonderful story that would have easily earned 4 stars from me, the final scene is so flawed that I am morally offended and find myself compelled to make a stand for humanism. The three characters make a decision at the end of this book which is essentially taking the law into their own hands and, because they are overpowered beast hunters, is an evil act of its own. I cannot condone that and I am really upset the author decided to take the "easy" way, which turns the characters evil in my eyes, when there was scope for other alternatives that could have played on the themes already featured throughout the book: light vs dark, good vs evil, survival vs death, law and order vs lynchings and chaos.

I am not going to rant. Here is everything I actually liked about the book.
Ara's character has great development and I am grateful to the author for having a focus on domestic abuse, how it affects psychological processes and, as a result, influences victims' actions. There was scope to go a little deeper, but all in all I feel it was pretty well done.

I also enjoyed the two supporting characters, Khendric and Topper. The way their backstories were revealed (or left unrevealed) was really great and kept me guessing. It was fun and unexpected and there were some great moments. The dynamics of the group were also really well done.

The monsters were cool and the detective plotline with the serious consequences of messing up definitely kept me turning those pages. Although it is dark and gory, this book manages to stay on the side of detective novel with some bloody bits, rather than crossing the line into thriller or going right over into horror. I appreciate that since those are my least favourite genres. I really enjoy a good detective novel and having the investigation aspect in this story definitely made it worthwhile for me. I enjoyed that aspect of it very much.

The worldbuilding is unique and intriguing. I would have appreciated a little more description of the landscapes as it was hard to visualise some of the places, but overall this world is really fascinating and I'd love to spend some more time in it. Perhaps I will. I'll have to see if I can shake of the distaste from the way this first book in the series ended.

This series is amazing!
This book does a fantastic job of setting the scene for the series and introducing characters.
This by no means means the book is sub par and doesn't have any action or stakes .
By the end of the book you'll live world and love the characters

I spotted this book after seeing on Twitter that the author recently made the change from traditional to indie publishing, and I’m so glad I gave it a go!
The Beast Hunters is a small book of only 180 pages, and I believe it was initially written as one giant novel and then split into three, which I think works for the story.

I was surprised with how well done the world building was considering the smaller size, the author doesn’t go into great detail in each scene, the whole plot is father fast paced, but what he does do well is make those small details matter. For example: there is a beastiary in the back of the book with some (rather awesome and even humorous) descriptions of each beast mentioned in the story, this then links to one of the characters as they keep their own journal about the kind of beasts they encounter.

There is nothing particularly new about the characters and premise, but the characters were well fleshed out and I enjoyed the ‘master and apprentice’ sort of vibe, added to that there is some really good banter and quirks given to each of them which really makes the experience more immersive. There was also noticeable growth and character progression which was fun to read!

My one gripe is that because of the cover I was expecting a dragon and one never came 😅 but there was some hints at some big monsters which are coming, one in particular a big ‘Ho-oh’ type bird I’m super keen to see, and excited to see where Christer takes the story!

Already bought the next book! And you should too!
