- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2020This memoir kept me engaged and reading from beginning to end. The author invites readers to take a journey with her to France and Europe, and brilliantly paints the scenes via evocative language and vibrant imagery. It's as close as one could get to actually being there. The author provides a rich emotional landscape including fear, pain, humor, forgiveness and joy which the reader is able to identify with every step along the way.
There were some especially humorous aspects to the book that made me genuinely laugh out loud which I appreciated, as well as beautiful imagery such as the following example:
"I would miss my fresh croissants and warm chocolate almond bread. I would even miss modest Montargis. As the sun slipped beyond the horizon, leaving traces of orange and red behind, I realized I would also miss quiet evenings watching the sun disappear as it left a menagerie of colors streaking across the darkening sky. France had made a lasting impression on me. We would be a part of each other forever." The entire book is threaded with descriptive and figurative language which makes the book a true journey through time and space.
I especially appreciated the fact that faith was woven throughout, and was a major facet of the book, leading to forgiveness and understanding, despite significant childhood trauma. I highly recommend Unexpected Places as a study in both the genres of Christian literature and memoir. I would be interested in reading more work by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2012How often do women (basically at any age) come to a place in life and wonder "How in the World Did I Get Here"? Whether or not you are running from your past, confused about your present, and worried about your future.......Dionna points out that God is sovereign and know's exactly where we are and why. Having asked myself the question over and over again, reading the book added constellation that God is in ultimate control of my life. With hurts from the past, and uncertainty about the future if we as women (even men) can learn and accept who we are and whose we are; life becomes so much easier. Dionna candidly takes her readers into her past, allows them to travel abroad with her in the present, and encourages them to get excited about her future which is in God's hands. The book is the Chrisitian version of Eat, Pray, Love....with a biblical perspective. Thank you Dionna for taking us on a journey of salvation, healing, and restoration!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2013This book is an inspirational read, it teaches you how to be an overcomer in any situation that face you in life, to seek only God and not humans for approval, to embrace forgiveness and to never give up. There is some laugh out loud moments, moments when you as a reader just have to pause and give God glory for his love and faithfulness, other moments when you feel like crying with the writer. Ms. Latimer-Hearn is a great writer because she makes all of your senses come alive; it's as if you were there with her.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2012Unprotected Places is less of a book and more like the literary equivalent of the bad guy from Temple of Doom ripping out your heart and throwing into lava. In fact, the plot and every second line of Unlaminated Places seems almost a direct throwback to Temple of Doom except for the part that none of the book takes place in India or involves any bug eating, whip cracking magic diamonds or hilarious banter with plucky Asian children. In fact I would've bumped this review up to eleven stars if the plot was less about the heroine trying to make it big as an American cat juggler in Paris and feature more mine cart chases and shirtless Harrison Fords. Ungerminated Places is a tour de force, expect it to be setting fire to the bottom of a donation box near you.
