#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • In Atlas of the Heart, Brené Brown writes, “If we want to find the way back to ourselves and one another, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories and be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.”

Don’t miss the five-part Max docuseries Brené Brown: Atlas of the Heart!

In
Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.

Over the past two decades, Brown’s extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives.
Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as on Brown’s singular skills as a storyteller, to show us how accurately naming an experience doesn’t give the experience more power—it gives us the power of understanding, meaning, and choice.

Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

Living a brave life is not always easy: We are, inevitably, going to stumble and fall. It is the rise from falling that Brown takes as her subject in Rising Strong. Brené Brown taught us what it means to dare greatly, rise strong, & brave the wilderness. Based on new research conducted with leaders, change makers, & culture shifters, she’s showing us how to put those ideas into practice so we can step up & lead. A timely and important book that challenges everything we think we know about cultivating true belonging in our communities, organizations, and culture. In hardcover for the first time, this tenth-anniversary edition of the game-changing book features a new foreword and brand-new tools to make the work your own.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of December 2021: In Atlas of the Heart Brené Brown unpacks the complex web of emotion, behavior, and thoughts that are triggered by our experiences, and gives us the nuanced language to fully understand our feelings and express them to others. At first glance, this seems like a very thorny subject, but Brown engages the reader through anecdotes, humor, and data to create a narrative that makes total sense. The book’s map metaphor and chapter titles guide readers through the places we go when we are experiencing different emotions, illustrating how a seemingly singular emotion or experience—regret, for example—has multiple categorizations (six in this case), each of which feels distinct from the others. As I read Atlas of the Heart I had the overwhelming sense that Brown “got” me so clearly it gave me the chills, and I think others will also feel seen, understood, and changed for the better by what this book has to offer. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

aka The Encyclopedia of Emotions
5 out of 5 stars
aka The Encyclopedia of Emotions
This book might best be described as ‘The Encyclopedia of Emotions.’ It covers (pretty much) all the emotions we might feel in our lives, including the ones that make us feel good, like joy and wonder, and the ones that make us feel bad, like shame and envy. We are all human, and therefore susceptible to feeling any and all emotions on a daily basis, and it is therefore paramount for our personal growth to understand our feelings. What is the purpose of Brown’s toil in these expansive emotional fields? The desire to help people better connect with one another. (After all, what is life without other people to experience it with?) She defines connection as “the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued, when they can give and receive without judgment, and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” We are all emotional creatures, and being able to communicate our thoughts and feelings to one another is what strengthens our social bonds.Brown helps us achieve emotional understanding via her focus on language. “Language does more than just communicate emotion, it can actually shape what we’re feeling,” she writes. “When we don’t understand how our emotions shape our thoughts and decisions, we become disembodied from our own experiences and disconnected from each other.” Our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors all work together, and a large part of their connection is our own understanding of their relationship inside of us. This understanding hinges on our ability to properly label our emotions—the central theme of Brown’s work.Developing this social communication starts with our own self-communication because if I don’t know and understand who I am and what I need, want, and believe, I can’t share myself with you. “I need to be connected to myself, in my own body, and learning what makes me work” in order to develop the grounded confidence I need to move through the world and cultivate meaningful connections with others. This is one of the oldest philosophical maxims—the words “Know Thyself” having been found inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in the Ancient Greek precinct of Delphi. In this emotional encyclopedia, I found some definitions for emotions surprising and thought-provoking. For example, Brown describes shame as the birthplace of perfectionism. Healthy striving is internally driven, she correctly observes, meanwhile perfectionism is “externally driven by a simple but potentially all-consuming question: What will people think?” For another example, she defines narcissism as “the shame-based fear of being ordinary.” This really gave me much to think about: When we fear that society will judge us improperly (or negatively), we might attempt to control the narrative ourselves, which can often lead to narcissistic behavior. Fear and shame dictate many of our behaviors, a sentiment I plan to try and observe within myself going forward. With over eighty different emotions defined and discussed in this tome, it is designed to be revisited whenever we need a refresher. This book can help us put words to feelings, aiding us in understanding both ourselves and others. As it says on the cover, Brown’s work is designed to help us understand the language of human experience and use these tools to further develop meaningful connections. It is a wonderful guide to the emotional world and an excellent almanac for increasing our emotional intelligence.

Dr. Brene has done it again! This is one of the most profound books she has written in terms of its emotional impact on individuals, couples and relationships. Her correlation and comparison of emotional pairs, and the insights of near enemies and distant enemies was a goldmine insight I had never heard before. I have invited my wife of 52 to read it through together aloud. It is the cheapest therapy I know of! It is my new on my top 5 books list! Dr. Steve

In total, I had gotten 3 of these books: me for me, one for a friend and then had to replace that one since it came messed up. The book itself is so good! I’m learning so much. Giving in depth language to emotions and experiences is the first step to being able to work through your life from a healing lens.
That being said: WHAT is going on with packaging?! My book came perfectly fine in a book box “made to fit” the book. The first book I ordered my friend came in a regular box, with the pages totally smashed up (first two pictures). And then when I ordered her a replacement copy, the book sleeve was damaged because of the same carelessness in packaging (third picture). A hard copy is worth it, but I would say there’s a 50/50 chance it might come damaged.

I had heard the name Brené Brown for a long time but I’ve only recently finally purchased her book (and audible). The book is visually beautiful — worth the purchase — but I’m so, so glad I also got the Audible version too. Dr. Brown doesn’t just read you her book, she talks to you about it. She is expressive, personable, passionate — it feels like you are in a conversation with her. On several occasions she’ll pause and say, “I’m going to reread those sentences. They are really important and I want you to understand them.” And then she repeats them. It made the book that much better. Of course the topic, emotions and making connections, is thoughtful and thoroughly researched. Some topics were rough to go through but learning isn’t always easy. This is a book and Audible that I will return to. Highly recommended.

Brené Brown has been one of the most important teachers in my life, so I’m biased in this review. Her books have taught me about myself and helped me traverse the daily struggles of being human. Her podcasts have introduced me other teachers that have helped me too. She has been my gateway to studying about and hopefully becoming a better human, and for that I will always be grateful to her. Her books are always a resource I go back to when I need them. Her books give me the language to help me understand my hard feelings and experiences. I’ve passed on this knowledge to the students in my class and have seen how this knowledge helps children as well. So, I’ve been excitedly anticipating this book, since it was announced. I am not disappointed.

This is a beautiful book and exceeded my expectations. The first thing I noticed was the size, it’s a little wider than her other books. Then I was excited because it’s in color. The layout and design of each page was thoughtful. The addition of pictures and diagrams add meaning and tone to the emotions, strategies, and research being shared.

I appreciate the set-up of table of contents. Each chapter is listed with a title Places We Go … followed by the experiences and emotions that will be discussed. This gives you the ability to choose your own adventure. You can read it in order or go to where you need some knowledge. It also helps with rereading and making your way back to something you want to be reminded of. 87 emotions and experiences are a lot, and they’re written concisely so you can spend a small amount of time reading and still walk away with some new learning. Lastly, the Cultivating Meaningful Connection section at the end of the book is a useful and actionable guide to using Brené’s research to improve how you interact with yourself and others.

This book is like a textbook for being human and a resource that I plan to come back to. It is written in Brené’s authentic, comforting voice. As I read it, I hear her voice in my head like we are in conversation. I did wish that some parts were expanded, but this is a manageable useful book the way it is. Also, what I’ve learned about Brené is that this book does not end her research or conversation on these topics. They will come up on her podcasts, her research will continue, and the learning will never stop.

This hardcover book is absolutely amazing and Brene (as always) offers incredibly helpful insight in life. However, it arrived with some damage due to inadequate packaging. While the content is fantastic and highly recommended, I hope Amazon can improve its packaging to ensure books arrive in good condition.

It seems the only option offered to rectify the issue is to return the book. I don’t wish to go through the return process for a damaged item — I would have preferred a partial refund or a gift card instead.

The issue could have been avoided by putting a cover on the book so that the packaging doesn’t damage it. Paying $30 for a hard cover book and it arriving like this is disappointing.

One of my favorite books that I read in 2024!

I loved how the book is divided into different chapters around situations and then further categorized by emotions.

I learned some new emotions, I had some clarified and I spent a lot of time reflecting on my experiences/connections with others.

I highly recommend this book. You can easily spend 10-15 minutes reading through easy "chunks" while giving yourself time to reflect, or quickly read through.
