The Dead Girl's Guide to Terminal Cancer: A True Tale of Anxiety, Horror, & Hope Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

"This darkly humorous and poignant memoir chronicles her defiant journey through misdiagnosis, medical apathy, and the
harrowing realities of end-stage cancer care.... A book that will show you to never doubt your intuition and hand your power over to others. A book I couldn't put down. Gina's story will inspire you to fight for yourself, even when all seems lost."
- Taryn Gray, Centred Magazine (Australia)

This is not a normal cancer story. It has some sad parts. It has some moments of joy in random and odd places. It has terror. It has an abundance of anger, ego and self determination. I suppose I could name all the adjectives and they’d fit somewhere that year.

I spent a lot of 2019 with my heart in the wrong place. Not metaphorically, but physically. My tumors created their own black hole, and it was moving my organs across my chest. I lived most of the year with my lung either partially or fully crushed. I was a list of medical problems too long to fix.

If we were to meet in January of 2019, and not again until January 2020, you wouldn’t know I had survived eight different death sentences. In fact, you might think I took the year off, or had just returned from an extended vacation.

But I went to hell. It was a trip—not sure I’d call it a vacation. Which begs the question: How did I not only cheat death, but come out of cancer healthier than I went in?

Honestly, it’s not all that complicated. Anytime someone asks me what saved my life, I answer truthfully.

Pudding.

Eugenia Mancini Horan is an artist, lifelong anxiety sufferer and an early patient of humor and laughter as her medicine. She spent 2019 finding, then fighting stage 4 lung cancer and defeating it by 2020, most likely one of the coolest things she’s done. That year in the medical system as an end-stage cancer patient with a doctor sworn promise of 0% odds of living through August 2019 gave her a unique perspective about illness and survival. She proudly mothers two questionably behaved dogs and is married to the man who carried her everywhere that year she couldn’t walk.

As Gina has affirmed “it’s a chonky bite to swallow.”
And after reading her book, I completely agree. But it’s also interesting, enlightening, informative, relatable for some or many, heart wrenching, maddening and funny…yes, funny, but that’s not due to the circumstances but rather her writing style and ability to see the lighter side of a dire situation, and convey it-so welcomed by the reader. To become aware of the circumstances surrounding her beginnings, subsequent illness leading to her hospital stay, and events following, is to sadly, become aware of a broken healthcare system and inhumanity surrounding it and society. It makes one wonder if this is the way it’s always been or a reflection of current times. You’ll wonder where we went wrong and what can be done to remedy it. Not a spoiler, since the outcome is known- The fact that Gina ultimately thrives and survives despite a harrowing and seemingly hopeless situation, being continuously reinforced by many involved, might be construed by some as a miracle. There were those who encouraged and assisted in her recovery whom she sees as mentors, caregivers and loved ones. Her Seth whose love never wavered literally carried and cared for her throughout. But the driving force behind her recovery was her incredible perseverance, tenacity, belief in herself and her instincts and utter refusal to give up! I give this book an A+ rating and recommendation.

This book brings light to so many topics. Right away, the author’s depiction of anxiety was the most relatable depiction I’ve read before - especially related to medical appointments, procedures, etc. This progresses into a perspective we rarely get to hear - the viewpoint of someone dying of cancer, as well as the perspective of their caretaker/spouse. Throughout the entire book, both Gina and Seth do a beautiful job at conveying what they’ve gone through. Though many readers may not be able to relate with firsthand experience, the authors write in a way that somehow make it relatable. As a reader you’ll be cheering, yelling, laughing, and crying with them. And while the book isn’t about you, you may even find yourself questioning many of your own personal experiences with doctors, medical professionals, insurance, and health care in general - as this book brings light to a very flawed and broken system. If nothing else, you will leave with a renewed importance and appreciation for standing up for yourself and your family members, without a blind trust in a system that does not always protect us. While it’s not a light read, and I knew how it ended before it began, i still found myself unable to put it down. Bravo to the authors for providing a space for people to feel understood and supported, and for putting a difficult story out there so that others may have a better outcome.

This is the memoir of a girl with more determination than is typically found in humans.
It is a gritty, page-turning look at the ugly side of human beings, of healthcare, and ultimately of this thing we call life. And cancer? It has no pretty side anyway. Certainly not in Gina’s case.
Her school of hard knocks was the background that made her tough enough to withstand a downward spiral into some of the worst healthcare you can imagine, all while being characteristically witty and delightfully sarcastic.
And while a cancer survival story could seem ho-hum in a sea of mystery and suspense novels, I promise you I’d rather have read this in my precious spare time than anything else.
There is a reason it’s number one in it’s category on two platforms.
    Buy the book.

A scathing indictment of the U.S. healthcare system from the perspective of an advanced-stage cancer patient trying to navigate a devastating diagnosis and be seen as a human being. A darkly humorous tale of exactly what is on the cover: Anxiety, Horror & Hope.

Wow. A story that needed to be told. You are about to go for a ride. This book was so intense. At times I felt like I was driving in the wrong lane or looking over a cliff.
Gina was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and given zero chance of survival. She embarks on a course of treatment -but what she receives instead will send chills down your spine. The senseless suffering Gina endures will leave you speechless and heart broken. It will make you question everything, and you may think differently at your next Dr. appointment.
A captivating story that I not only learned from but could relate to. Gina teaches us that "navigating" Drs and the medical system is scarier than cancer itself.

Gina's engaging style of writing grabs you from the first page. A truly horrifying life or death experience with a mix of humor and wit. This book will stay with you long after you read it.
I hope this book gets in the hands of a million readers. The insight into our flawed medical system is an eye opener. Anyone that has ever stepped foot in a hospital or has gone to a Dr. should read this.

There are power in words. Even more when they are written and read. I recommend this book!

    Buckle Up.
