「 WHAT IS VG-10 DAMASCUS STEEL？」

An outgrowth of laminated or piled steel, a similar technique used to combine steels of different carbon contents, providing a desired mix of hardness and toughness. This laminating process, in which different types of steel together produce patterns that can be seen in the surface of the finished blade, forms the basis for pattern welding. There is a VG-10 steel core forged with 33 layers of Damascus steel on either side. The steel is laminated in the mold which layers of steel and steel core are sandwiched together. After more than one thousand degrees high temperature heat treatment and minus 100 degrees ice forging process. Make it looks exotic and downright gorgeous. Damascus steel knives are stronger than their historic counterpart, as they contain less impurities and are made with homogenous layers. The blade edge can reach to HRC 60±2 (Rockwell Hardness Scale).

「 HOW TO RECOGNIZE REAL AND FAKE DAMASCUS？」

In some rare cases, people will try to pass off regular stainless steel with no layering as Damascus by laser printing a design on the blade. These are pretty easy to spot because they either don’t look like Damascus or the pattern could just rub off. Real Damascus is intrinsic to the steel itself but fake Damascus is only a facade. You can use sandpaper to get that satin look. Once it’s nice and polished, etch it with ferric chloride or muriatic acid. If the Damascus pattern comes back, it’s real. If not, you have a fake on your hands

Excellent set of knives! My husband is very satisfied. He is the cook in the family. He had some fun slicing through paper just like on commercials for high end knives. Be careful to not cut yourself accidentally as they are very sharp!

I’ve never really been prone to buy expensive knives. I’ve always felt that the $20 set from Costco seemed to do the job just fine. Besides, if something happened, I could just go back and get another set. Well, my husband got me these knives for Xmas (with some prodding from me) and I was ready to give more expensive knives a chance. Of course if you wander through the knives section at Williams Sonoma you’ll see that these are, comparatively speaking, still inexpensive knives.

Well, the knives arrived today and I couldn’t be happier. They have that layering seen in good knives and weapons, they are balanced nicely, they are sharp - boy are they sharp - and they’re nice looking. I’m pretty happy so far, but let’s see what happens after some time using them.

I need to look to see what the warranty is on these knives, I never checked and that might be important and certainly important when selecting a knife set like this.

But, back to the point, the knives seem to be very good quality and they are being sold at a good price compared to this quality elsewhere.

These are like mini samurai swords. They are probably 3x heavier than a normal stainless blade. Feel like you are ready to do battle. The feeling of actually cutting a carrot, not chopping ... wow . The instructions say need to keep a light oil on them to prevent slight rusting, yet dishwasher safe (?)
.hmm.. if you are lazy cleaner perhaps not for everyone. These are real steel .

Love this set!! Knives come SUPER sharp and ready to use. Block is nice and sturdy. Great addition to any kitchen. Make sure you hand wash the knives after each use and putting them in the dishwasher will not only dull the blades, but may also leave spots depending on your water.
I had a set of Henkels and I like that set and used it for more than 5 years. But it was time for an updated set and the value for this set with all the pieces is great! The scissors cut through chicken bone without problems. I'm a huge fan of the Santuko, the Chefs, and the pairing knives. Been using for 6 months and have not had to sharpen them yet. Great set!!

Yes, the blades are layered steel aka damascus, i tested them.

I actually did the test to see if this in fact is damascus, and the blade is, but the handle is not. I sanded down the metal on one side of one blade then polished that side, then put drain cleaner acid on that side for a minute and the damascus pattern came back. They have welded the blade to the handle like many knife makers do. The blades are thin and very very very sharp. There were a few chips in a few blades but they were very small, and not in an area that requires immediate resharpening. Also the fact that there are tiny chips on a few spots is proof these blades have a high hardness and were tempered. Overall these are a good value, and i am happy with my knives and my wife was happy with them even before she knew they were real damascus.

The Damascus pattern is visible on all the knives and looks incredible. The scissors aren’t Damascus and aren’t really great for much. The block was black but there’s already flakes coming off. The knives are too nice to put in a dishwasher. The knives are very sharp
