Also, it appears that there is a software update out there that will allow you to program DIY GMRS repeater channels from 30-54. This is a great feature. I just couldn't get it work for me.
It works very well. That said, audio quality is not what it is on my Wouxun KG-805. Then again, the GM-30 costs 1/3 of what the other unit does.
I did not keep it for long because I needed a unit that was more water resistant. A friend of mine who is a very experienced ham radio operator bought it off of me for exactly what I paid. He also saw the "bang for the buck" this unit delivers.
Great entry level GMRS radio and not a bad back up unit either.
The short version is this is my go-to radio to toss to my family members when we are out on hikes. The major issue is the programing of channels is a bit limited.
The things I love about this radio is how reliable it is. It doesn't have any water or dust protection rating but I have dropped them in puddles, been in downpours, lost them in a snow bank while skiing, been dropped in the sand and these things keep right on ticking. They just won't die. They are very simple to use I have 3 that I keep programmed for family use and when we go on an outing I know I can just toss one to whoever and it'll work. I just make sure the channel is set, lock the keypad and we are off and running. I had swapped the rubber ducky antenna for a larger folding antenna but I realized that for 90% of the uses the stock antenna worked perfectly fine. I was able to get reliable signal strength at about a mile while hiking along Michigan's Pictured Rocks hiking trail. That's over rough terrain through thick trees. The only issues I had was if we happened to be on opposite sides of a larger hill or in some of the more iron rich areas, which you can't really fault the radios for.
The battery life is fantastic a full day use of about 12 hours was no issue and we had plenty of battery power to spare and the USB-C charging option was perfect!
The only issues I had was that while you have plenty of repeater channels and "DIY" channels listed you can only edit the main 22 channels for simplex use. I live that I can add multiple repeaters on the same channel with different PL tones but I wish I could have more custom channels. For our use it isn't a huge issue. The other minor issue is that the interface and software are a little slow to react. Not a deal breaker at all but something to note. Something else note worthy is the display backlight is very bright. The LCD is beautifully readable in direct sunlight but at night that thing is like the sun. Having an option to dim it would be nice but again not the end of the world My biggest annoyance is sometimes when you turn on the Roger beep the keypad beeps turn on too. The solution to that is just keep the Roger beep off. Having it on or off doesn't really matter to me, I know that the Roger beep is a big deal to people in both the GMRS and HAM communities but honestly I couldn't really care one way or the other, we basically use these as awesome walkie talkies in our family so we are perfectly fine with no Roger beep.
In summery
Pros:
Ease of use
Battery life /USB-C charging
Durability / Reliability
Cons:
Laggy user interface
Limited simplex programming
Weird beep bug
Neutral:
No backlight dimming control (seriously that thing is impressively bright)
I opted for the pack that includes extra mics and accessories, and it turned out to be a great deal. The additional microphones, although not extensively tested yet, appear to be of good quality, boasting a long cord for added convenience.
One standout feature is the incredible battery life when the radios are on but not actively transmitting. They can last for days, which is a huge plus, ensuring reliable communication during extended outdoor trips.
However, it's worth noting that the battery life takes a hit when using the FM radio feature, especially in cold winter conditions. While the radios perform admirably for regular communication, continuous use of the FM radio may last only a couple of hours. It's a minor drawback, but something to keep in mind if you plan on using this feature extensively in colder temperatures.
Overall, the Radioddity GM-30 radios are a reliable choice for outdoor enthusiasts, offering excellent range, additional accessories, and impressive battery life for most scenarios.
