4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 26,122 ratings

A Thriller Award winner, Best Paperback Original Novel.

For three years, Detective Jude Fontaine was kept from the outside world. Held in an underground cell, her only contact was with her sadistic captor, and reading his face was her entire existence. Learning his every line, every movement, and every flicker of thought is what kept her alive.

After her experience with isolation and torture, she is left with a fierce desire for justice—and a heightened ability to interpret the body language of both the living and the dead. Despite colleagues’ doubts about her mental state, she resumes her role at Homicide. Her new partner, Detective Uriah Ashby, doesn’t trust her sanity, and he has a story of his own he’d rather keep hidden. But a killer is on the loose, murdering young women, so the detectives have no choice: they must work together to catch the madman before he strikes again. And no one knows madmen like Jude Fontaine.

Review

“Absorbing.” Publishers Weekly

The Body Reader is a superb novel full of suspenseful exploits…An electrifying murder mystery—one of the best of the year.” —Mysterious Reviews

“Frasier is exceptional at weaving together the character trauma and the central plot. What the characters experience isn’t brushed aside, but their demons are faced head on and developed to add layers to the story. The result is a satisfying resolution with some hope readers may see the characters return in a future offering.” Beach Reads

“The story is totally engaging and Anne Frasier has a way with words that keeps you hooked nonstop.” —Mystery Sequels

From the Author

Q&A with Anne Frasier, author of The Body Reader
What inspired you to write about a woman who was kidnapped for three years? I liked the idea of following Jude's journey as she comes back from that place. It's a bit of an allegory. Many of us have found ourselves trapped in unbearable life situations that can be escaped with strength and determination.

How did you come up with the idea of a woman who is able to "read" bodies? I never actually saw body reading as the driving force of the book, and considered The Body Reader my working title. I just wanted a cop who was more sensitive to people than the average detective, which is how I wrote her.

How did you create the character Jude Fontaine, and at any point did you find it difficult to write from her perspective?
She was difficult because it was important that she be removed and shut off. It's hard to make that kind of character sympathetic, regardless of what she'sbeen through.

Would you ever consider writing a sequel to this book and if so, do you have any ideas on what you would focus on?I'd love to write a sequel. It would be a bigger story, with a bigger canvas.

Broken family dynamics seem to play a large role in this book. What inspired you to include this topic in your story? I come from a pretty damaged family, so it's hard to keep that kind of thing out of my books no matter how I try.

Chapter eighteen depicts a defining moment in the story for Jude Fontaine. Did you place yourself in her shoes during this part, and if so, was it a difficult moment to write about? I know it sounds odd, but I actually really enjoyed writing that scene because it was the culmination of her search for her captor and it allowed her to finally wake up and feel for the first time in the book.

Is there a message that you hope your readers take away when they are done reading this thrilling novel? At its core, The Body Reader isa story of female empowerment. Jude's freedom and sense of self was taken from her, but she came back stronger than ever.

5 Mind Blowing Stars

Take a chance on a new author if you haven’t read any of Ms. Frasier work this would be a great one to pick but hold your breath it is going to be a bumpy ride. Ms. Frasier will blow you away with another read you won’t be able to put down. Just when I thought I had a handle on the outcome the author sent me on another spin that let me saying WOW. I was hooked from the first page to the last this was not an easy book to lay down. This is one author that has fast become one of my all time favorites that I can’t wait until another book is published. If this isn’t on your TRB list it should be. If you love mystery, thrills and suspense you do not want to miss reading this. I promise you don’t know what you are missing as the author hooks you from start to finish. I have read and listened to the audio I am really having a hard time picking which I like the best. Both have good points but both are outstanding.

Emily Sutton-Smith does an outstanding job of narration. She pulls you in giving you wonderful character voices with outstanding emotions never leaving you guessing how each characters feels. Her tones are right on the money for each emotion that each characters has. She gives you a very rich and clear audio that you get lost in and do not want to put down. Her character voice for Jude is flat like it should be with all this poor women has gone through is there any wonder she shows very little emotion. Emily hits it right on the money. Her male voices are just a wonderful as her female ones giving you an even tone clear listen you get lost in. There are no background noises or any places where the volume is higher or lower that the other. There are no repeats of words, if a break was taken you cannot tell it. This is the first I have listen to this narrator but it will not be the last. She really brought this audio to life for me.

As the story opens you have a lady who is and has been kept in a basement nude, alone with only one person who feeds her and abuses her over and over again. As you turn the pages to start this story your mind will hold a picture of each scene once you close your eyes your mind will replay it over and over again. You will become Jude and feel her pain, you understand her as she takes on a life of hunted to being the hunter looking for her prey at every turn. She can tell what you are thinking by your body language. There are those that think she is crazy but we know her and me that she is most likely the sanest of all. Three years of living this nightmare over and over again each day and night you would think she would have gone crazy but you are very much wrong. When you have nothing but time on your hands for years you watch, look and read before long you know what people are thinking just by the way they hold their head, turn their body or let out a breath. She pulls her inner strength knowing one day somehow some way she will make it out of this alive and when she does someone is going to die. It is kill or be killed so she sets, waits, listen, waiting for the right time to make her move to set herself free. That day is today when the lights go out she makes her move running for her life she is out she is free but for how long and what waits for her on the other side.

I really loved Jude she is so strong yet so cool taking it all in moving around watching reading everyone’s body knowing who is lying and who is hiding things. The author has an outstanding way of making the words flow easy before your eyes taking you in and making you part of the story. Before you know it you are so hooked you can’t put the book down. This is not a story I would want to start at night you really need to start it early so you can give it the time it deserves. As you are drawn in the author will take over and blow your mind again and again. Just when you think you have the answers the author will change it leaving you with your mouth wide open looking back over what your eyes just took in.

The author switches back and forth from today to the past as you learn all that this remarkable lady has went through to become the lovely lady she is today. There is no doubt you will cheer for Jude as you feel the pain she has and must go through to find the answers to so many questions. The ending will blow you out of the water there are so many twist and turns you won’t see coming. Just as you think you have a handle on it Jude takes you down a different road you never saw coming. This is one author who knows how to get control of her readers leaving them handing on asking for more. I so enjoyed the many twist and turns each character adds so much to the read. Some you will like others you will not but by the time you have read the last page you will have relooked at each one over and over again seeing each from a different light.

From the first page you will find you heart beating faster as you turn to the next it is running over time by the time you have finished and turned the last page your find your heart rate is still beating as fast as it was from the start. Leaving your mind in a state of WOW not being able to forget what you just read you play each scene over again and again in your mind as you regroup and close your eyes for the night hoping you never have to life the nightmare this author has given her characters. If you are looking for your next mystery, thriller, suspense read you can stop looking you have found it. This is one book and one author you do not want to miss. I promise this will be your next favorite read!

Always have a mixed feeling about this topic which is sadly too real for so many women. As a work of fiction I thought it held my interest without being too horrifying .. Could have had a little more suspense for my taste but all in all a good book.

First, let me explain why I decided to read this book. I had read the third book in this series, which I received from NetGalley. I enjoyed reading that novel so much I purchased the first two novels in the series. This is the first novel in the series, and I was not disappointed.

The novel opens with the heroine, Detective Jude Fontaine, escaping after being locked in a cell in the basement of a house and used as a sex slave for the past three years. Upon getting to the street, she stops a cab, and before the cab driver could say no, she convinces him with the gun to take her home. Upon arrival, she knocks on the door and imagines her boyfriend passionately embracing her and welcoming her back. She discovers her boyfriend with a new girlfriend. She is devastated and only one other part of her previous life is left. She walks to the Minneapolis Police Department where she showed up, in a knit cap, heavy canvas jacket, boots, a smell of years of no personal hygiene, and a gun. The only Detective, Uriah Ashby, left in the station wanted nothing to do with a delusional homeless woman until he was told that her name is Jude Fontaine. Uriah never met Jude but he knew of her, a missing detective who was presumed dead. Compared to pictures of her she appears much older and with white hair not brown. She also knew much personal details of the squad room that could only be from someone who worked there. After telling how she escaped, she was taken to the hospital.

The novel proceeds as Detective Uriah investigates her case and as Jude tries to put her life back together to include returned to the homicide squad. She succeeds and is assigned to Uriah as his partner. Their first case is an apparent suicide by drowning. From here there are plenty of twists, turns and major bombs in her case as a victim and in those cases she is investigating. These investigations become very personal and test Jude’s ability to act professionally. Jude also, now has some new abilities that help her and confuse her partner at times, especially one that led to the title of this novel. My attention was captured early and kept locked throughout the entire novel.

The B-storyline also is rich. In the beginning Uriah learns much about Jude’s personality and how it has changed from before her abduction to her escaping. This continues throughout the entire novel. The strength of Jude’s character is illustrated by her determined effort to be reinstated as a detective and her perseverance once reinstated. Uriah also has an extensive B-storyline. His life changed with the suicide of his wife, and this fact affects how he interacts with others. Now with a new and possibly unstable partner he is greatly challenged. These characters along with many others were well developed and enriched my reading enjoyment.

The novel opens with a Jude being kept in captivity in deplorable conditions and repeatedly raped. This is not a solitary occurrence in this novel. Vulgar language is quite light, and violence generally is described after the fact. Overall, this novel contains strong adult content.

I was quite happy with my purchase of this novel and am looking forward to reading the second novel in this series. This novel was a quick read for me in that I read it in half of the usually time to read a novel of this length. Some readers may object to the fact that Jude would never be allowed back on the police force after what she experienced, and especially after some of her actions after returning to the police force. Despite in reality that assessment is true, it enhanced my enjoyment in reading this novel. Overall, I rate this novel with five stars.

A rather grizzly tale, imbedded in which are some valuable psychological insights. It’s an enjoyable read despite the macabre nature of the story. Yet it’s fill with hope.

Woody Allen wrote about people, that there two types. The horrible and the miserable. That's mostly true. Very few see this side of humanity like Homicide Detectives. Anne Frasier's Detective Jude Fontaine is an interesting character because she manages to be not only miserable but also brilliant, lucky, wildly aware of body language. Fontaine survives a lengthy hostage situation, returns to work and begins to rebuild her life.

It's a solid story even if some of the parts seem unconnected or fragmented at first. It's very satisfying, reading this and wondering if anything will ever come together.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Immersive read
Reviewed in India on April 12, 2021
I came across Anne Frasier through Find Me. It was a unique murder mystery, and I specifically loved the style of storytelling. The author gets deep into the psyche of her characters and through limited 3rd person pov, gets you inside the head of the character. I was looking for something similar and picked her earlier works. While The Body Reader is not at par with Find Me, it still is as immersive. You'll start feeling for the protagonist after a few chapters. The mystery sometimes takes a backseat as it's more of a character based than plot based. So if you're looking for a no nonsense murder mystery, you'll be disappointed. Also the payoff isn't that great and you'll be able to guess the culprit halfway through the book. But I believe writing a murder mystery isn't the primary purpose of the author.

I almost did not start reading this book because the story was so gruesome. But this is a story about winning not losing. It's about surviving and proving you were right and it's about good triumphing over evil. Bad things happen, but they are dealt with matter of factly. The good guys are likable and believable. You feel good at the end. Like others, I hope this becomes a series.
