As our dog's muzzle turns grey and their footsteps begin to wobble, we often wonder what more we can do to ensure our aging dog's well-being. Based on more than 15 years of veterinary visits with her senior dog patients and their families, new studies in animal and human health related to aging, and a lifetime of heartfelt tales about her own beloved senior dogs, Dr. Mary Gardner answers vital questions pet parents ask about how to extend and enhance older dogs’ lives and better manage the pressures of caregiving for aging dogs.

Breakthroughs in veterinary healthcare and deepening people-dog relationships have helped dogs live longer. Yet it seems our canine family members reach their senior years after only a few fleeting moments. Keeping our silvered-muzzle friends physically comfortable and emotionally engaged sometimes brings struggles that pet parents may not be fully prepared or equipped to handle. We may juggle tasks that involve alleviating pain, meeting special nutritional needs, creating a senior-dog-friendly home, and cleaning up frequent messes—along with learning to recognize and successfully manage our own caregiver-related stresses.

With warmth and a steady dose of humor, Dr. Mary Gardner’s go-to guide is perfect for dog parents who want to ensure their furry family members continue living their best lives throughout every stage of their golden years. From cloudy eyes to crusty noses, knobby knees to achy hips, picky eating to tucked tails—and everything in between—parents of senior dogs will learn which ailments their dogs will commonly confront and how these impairments may affect their lives.

Dr. Gardner guides pet parents in supporting geriatric dogs' well-being and navigating the complexities of providing elder-dog care at home, including:
  • watching for age-related issues,
  • identifying health warning signs that may require veterinary assistance,
  • implementing simple home hacks to ease dogs' daily activities and pet parents' caregiving,
  • selecting tools, products, and resources that soothe aging dog ailments,
  • choosing the veterinary medical care that best aligns with pet parents' goals,
  • asking key questions during veterinary visits,
  • anticipating the trajectories or patterns that certain illnesses follow,
  • assessing life quality,
  • managing caregiver fatigue,
  • evaluating options for aftercare,
  • experiencing and coping with loss, and
  • honoring your dog and their impact on your life.
Drawing on her veterinary medical expertise and focus on geriatric pet healthcare, Dr. Gardner helps us walk our wagging-tail family members through their twilight years with dignity and celebrate the deep relationships we share with our dogs.

I'm a Veteran Veterinarian...and Even I Learned A Lot From This Amazing Resource!

I'm a Veteran Veterinarian...and Even I Learned A Lot From This Amazing Resource!
When I was on the Dr. Oz Show, I was introduced as "America's Veterinarian." I've written 23 books and have hundreds of pet/vet books on my bookshelves. Why so many books? Because I'm a veterinary medical correspondent and have done network TV for over 25 years, have penned a nationally syndicated pet/vet column with Universal Press for over 20 years, am part of several popular websites such as VetScoop.com, am the founder of FearFreePets.com and do lots of national media interviews. Plus, I'm still a practicing veterinarian. But this review is not about me. I only list these platforms because I HAVE to have the current best information on pet health and happiness so that I'm a credible messenger and a great veterinarian.Despite being a greybeard myself (age 68) and a veteran veterinarian with over four decades of experience, I learned so much from my colleague Dr. Mary Garner's book, "It's Never Long Enough." This book is filled with practical, proven techniques that will help you beloved geriatric dog live a happy, healthy, full life. Like taking care of an elderly parent, the geriatric phase of a dog's life is when we get to give back the most to them. To return a portion of the unconditional love, limitless affection and to-die-for loyalty that they've blessed us with.Containing information not available online, this book will help you comfort your aging dog, mitigate pain and sensitivity, make wise food choices, and even teach the proverbial "new tricks." Plus, the book is an amazing guide on when, and how, to give the final grace. This book receives my top recommendation of any pet book that I've purchased in the past three years.

This book is exactly what I was looking for! So many chapters about everything you need to know or helpful tips for certain things when it comes to owning a geriatric dog. There are even chapters that help with the loss and knowing when it's time and how to help kids and other animals through that loss.

This is truly the how to manual I feel like every dog owner needs! How to help my boy navigate life and how to assist him and when it's needed.

She even goes over potential health issues to look out for for different parts of them!

This is over 500 pages of information, care, tips, solutions, and more! So well presented, easy to understand, and full of deep care and wisdom. I purchased several books and this was by far the best. Look no further.

I highly recommend this book for any owners of senior dogs. Unfortunately my dog passed before I got through all of it but what I read was a comfort. Reading about what your little one is going through gives you a sense of control but there’s also a lot of good advice.

As a veterinarian whose patients are mostly senior dogs, I've been looking for this book my entire career! I'm so thankful that Dr. Mary Gardner decided to write it! Dr. Gardner does a masterful job of covering a huge scope of topics that are important for senior dog owners, but she does so through stories--of her own dogs and her patients--which makes the book a wonderful read. The pictures and diagrams are invaluable, as are the home hack tips and product recommendations. The whole book is so well thought out and written with so much insight and empathy, I can't recommend it enough!

Without this book, I would be lost and wouldn't know what to do to care for my aging fury babies... I really appreciate Dr. Mary Gardner to put all elderly care in a one book.

This book has so much information. The things I knew in this book were only because of the professionals I reached out to about my aging dog (which has been pricey). Understanding and knowing what to try makes such a difference in an aging dog's last stage in life! I highly recommend this book! Your pup will be thankful too!

This came recommended by my vet and has great ideas on how to help a senior pet on a budget

Nothing is lacking in this book. I read it cover to cover, which I rarely do for non-fiction. Start reading anywhere and you will be immediately engaged in the combination of medical information and interesting real stories and experiences. Tons of reference material, lists for various situations and QR codes. Above all is the warmth and understanding.

I bought this for my daughter, a registered vet tech who adopts senior dogs. The book contains serious information and is more like a textbook resource than a story book. My daughter is delighted with it and includes it in her veterinary information library. Highly recommend for keeners on the subject of seeing dogs through their senior years. Highly recommend.
