"Karen Poppy's much anticipated debut poetry collection, Diving At The Lip Of The Water,is to be published on May 1, 2023 by Beltway Editions. Poppy, a poet and lawyer, has written a book “that will rough a reader up and then wrap their scrapes in silk,” according to Francesca Bell. Scott Ferry observes that Karen Poppy “wields the power of the immortal in each word, each song.” Sonia Greenfield writes that “ the poems...are wide-ranging...whether they're leaping off from the lines of Whitman or Plath, exploring failures of intimacy, or gathering animals in a menagerie of the symbolic, their untamed characteristics bristling at the book's edges and representative of the speaker's own wild sense of self.” This book confronts family systems and societal gender expectations, to reclaim what makes us powerful and whole. It revels in and demonstrates what Judy Grahn calls “paradox and power”. Hence, the diver dives at the lip of the water. What waits for her when she enters? You will find the answer in these luminous, arresting poems."

A stunning collection of poetry whose cover image perfectly captures the power, strength, practiced poise and chilling immersion by the poetry within, describing the life within.Karen Poppy’s poems sing with images, sounds and stories that circumscribe deep pain and betrayal, raw tenderness, love and healing. Many poems took my breath away, but the poem “in that place “ about a fox, keeps me enthralled, rereading and rereading. The book is masterfully organized, the sections drawing an arc from origins and trauma, to an invitation for all of us to “mark each other with freedom, ” to the deep dive and finally, in part 5, to healing.Karen Poppy’s collection does all this with verve, poise, raw truth telling and lines in every poem that moved me deeply with their wisdom, freshness and ultimately a tribute to the beauty of this life and world, the beauty of true courage, of “trusting nature’s agenda.”

Karen Poppy provides a deep Dive into the Lip of the Water of their life. They paint vividly with poetry, of their family's strengths and tragedies. Karen breaks it down, Grandmother to Mother to Father to Lover. Like An Oyster on the Beach, Crack Crack Open Emergency or a snail shell. Life's changes emerging. One non-binary Badass Mermaid taking on life's love to nurture their non-binary place. Like an antelope marking it's loved ones.
