Everyone says vampires aren't real. Tommy Lucas isn't so sure.

Nine-year-old Tommy Lucas needs a bone marrow transplant to survive. But he’s convinced his disease is a curse on his bloodline, that he’s a vampire. His mother’s an oncologist, but Tommy’s convinced only magic can cure him—or the same synthetic blood substitute developed for urban legend Viscount Claudius Fallon.

Tommy's stoked when he discovers a five-part series about Fallon in an online pulp fiction magazine called Philly’s Argosy. Descended from a ruling class of vampires in Cardiff, legend has it that Fallon traveled to Eureka Springs, Arkansas seeking a cure for his own leukemia during WWII.

Tommy’s quest leads him to befriend local artist and gallery owner Callan Masters, who struggles with his growing affection for Tommy’s mom, June—for he is Fallon, cured in 1939 at Norman G. Baker’s Cure-for-Cancer Hospital.

Dedicated to living off-grid and as a human, Callan must decide whether he will take the risk involved in helping Tommy or falling in love with June. His bite is no longer capable of turning anyone—or so he thinks.

What readers are saying:

"This is not the average vampire story. As a matter of fact, it’s not an average story at all. The fresh and memorable plot will have you cheering for Tommy. The details dance off the page and transport you into another world. All this is done in a dual timeline of the past and present which flows naturally. I was captivated by the author’s ability to orchestrate a beautifully written story rich with imagination. By combining love, sacrifice, hope, and loss, this is a story that will remain in your heart long after you close the book. I will definitely be reading more by this gifted author."

—Kim Wilch, Reviewer @onemoreexclamation

"A young boy’s belief in the supernatural builds to the ultimate payoff in Rogers’s surprising, discursive, deeply heartfelt novel, an urban fantasy that edges into warm family drama."

—Booklife Reviews by Publishers Weekly

Falling Stars held my interest from the beginning, with a wonderful story set in my hometown of Eureka Springs. The story within the story comes together in such a way that leaves you wanting more. This is a ‘don't miss’ book by a very talented author. I can't wait to share it with my book club.”

—Jane Derden, Owner of Beaver Pet Boarding, Eureka Springs

“As a lifelong English teacher, I so admire Rogers’s richly drawn characters, the manipulation of past and present, the juxtaposition of stark reality and mysticism, the descriptive and precise word choices. My reading preferences tend toward historical fiction, biography, mystery, and suspense.

What have you done to me, Julie Rogers? This book isn't even a genre I'd particularly gravitate toward, yet I thought about Falling Stars constantly when I couldn’t read, and the book stayed with me long after I finished. I couldn’t stop seeing Tommy in his high-tech casket. Am I obsessed? Well done!"

—Becky Hoag, Coauthor of Letters to Rose: A Holocaust Memoir

I admire the amount of research Ms. Rogers had to do to write this book, and it gave me pause as to how it might be classified. Is it historical fiction or fantasy? It's a good combination of both. As a teacher educator of future secondary English teachers, I'm always looking for books for my pre-service teachers to read and consider for their classroom libraries. This is a great choice for adolescent readers because even the sex scene is metaphoric with language no parent would censor. Ms. Rogers gets that. I do think the historical fiction readers will appreciate her tenacity in the research about the Queen Mary and the passage via ship in the last 1930s. I found this detail very interesting, but some readers might feel bogged down by it. It really depends upon the reader. I haven't been a fantasy reader, but I do like a good vampire story, and Ms. Rogers gives us a great story line with the interplay of the past and present. I loved that. I've also visited Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and her descriptions are on point. It was fun to recognize places I've been to! Her descriptions are authentic. She also develops the characters of June, Tommy, Gaye, and Callan well, and the reader gets caught up in their stories. There were a few places where I had to suspend my disbelief, but I suppose that comes with the territory of fantasy. She definitely studied the vernacular of the past, so that gave authenticity to her narrative from the past. I had more trouble with the modern vernacular of a young boy. Do 21st Century boys say, "Donkey balls"? As noted, some fantasy readers might struggle through some of the very detailed language if they are accustomed to quick reads through a novel's plot. I appreciated the attention to details. Congratulations to Ms. Rogers for her devotion to history and vampires!

“Falling Stars” introduces June and Tommy Lucas, mother and nine-year-old son, as they struggle with Tommy’s cancer diagnosis. June’s an oncologist struggling to find the best treatment for her son. Tommy’s just struggling to survive until he happens upon an urban legend…

Overall, I enjoyed this story. It is told through multiple POVs including the main characters of June and Tommy as well as through the online story as they each read it. The pacing of the present POVs was really good and with enough suspense to keep me flipping pages. However, the past timeline through the telling of the online story was a little back and forth. Some portions were really drawn out and while clearly researched, seemed to focus more on what was going on historically than on any meaningful plot. Other portions were the most interesting and suspenseful in the whole book. But it’s the relationships in this story really make it.

This was such a compelling read. The author did a wonderful job of weaving together fantasy and historical fiction elements, taking readers on a journey between magic and reality. The story's profound atmospheric nature and the imagery of the author’s writing style brought the reader into the narrative, keeping them brilliantly immersed in the characters' lives.

Yet despite the fantastic depths of the fantasy and magical realism that the author imbued this story with, the true heart of this novel was the immense and profound humanity found within these characters. The themes of family, love, and what we are willing to sacrifice to save or protect those we love all play a vital role in the story. These characters' relatable nature and journey made the story feel tangible and heartfelt.

The story is like a story within a story talks about the pass in the present. Tommy’s belief in the paranormal leads him to believe that his blood disease is really that he is a vampire. He loves to read about Fallon he believes was a vampire that cured himself in 1939. He reads about him a lot and unknown to most people ,Fallon now Liz is a human and is in love with Tommy‘s mother June. He doesn’t believe that his bike can change anybody so he’s considering helping Tommy, but will it cost him his relationship with Tommy’s mother June who he has fallen in love with redefined what happens between fallen and Tommy’s mother and Fullon helps Tommy by curing him or turning him, it’s a must for everybody it will keep returning the pages until the end of the book and still wanting more

Well-written, interesting idea. But overwritten: too many tangents and unnecessary words--both scenes, events, and descriptions. The interspersing of the present-day action with material from the past is a common technique, but fell flat for me here. Nor did the whole set-up of this being a project of a team of goth writes at a small lit/fan mag.
