Troy Urdahl's "Chasing Influence" is more than just a book about a small-town baseball coach; it is a story of how the actions of one person can influence and entire community. The story of Stick Olson is universal. A small-town baseball coach who suffers a pair of setbacks only to have generations of his players rally around him. If you've ever been around the ballpark, the characters are not only relatable, but you feel you actually know them and may have played with them in a past summer in the sun.

Not only is this well-written, it is an homage to all that is good about the game, mainly everything that surrounds the game. One can almost smell the fresh cut infield grass that Coach Stick obsessively maintains. You can almost hear the infield rakes dragging across the footprints in the dirt as well as the click-clack of the steel spikes on concrete as players move about the ballpark. At some point you recognize that this is not about baseball, but about life, and the profound impact a quality coach can have on people.

"Chasing Influence" allows you to recognize that what happens on the field pales in comparison to the relationships it helps build off the field. We have all had a "Coach Stick" in our lives in one way or another. As a coach we all aspire to be a "Coach Stick" in someone's life. This book is a must-read for any sports fan, especially those who love the smells and sounds of the ballpark. This is a book I will be sharing with others in both the coaching and teaching professions.

The book is full of stories of people who made a difference in others' lives by being a model for others. There was the baseball coach who cut his honeymoon short to coach a baseball game because he knew his kids needed his quiet, caring ways at the game. His wife, helped out at the snack shack and she wouldn't have it any other way. They were following a dream, and their love of life was contagious.
The author takes a through a someone's story and then has a teaching moment. It is an interesting way to bring to light what transformational coaching is and looks like.
I found it helped me see things I could do differently/better in my own coaching practice.
