"A thrilling sea-faring fantasy packed with swords, magic, inhuman foes, and endearing heroes."-BookLife (by Publishers Weekly)

Captain Murdoch has the chance of a lifetime in his grasp…or is it just a fool’s errand?

Zale “the Gale” Murdoch, one of the greatest seafaring merchants in the kingdom of Tuscawny, is at the top of his game. No one has reached the guild’s grandmaster status in generations, and he’s but one job away, with his biggest rival right on his heels. When a mysterious stranger approaches him with information that will seemingly ensure his success, Zale is tempted. The mission: to retrieve the Grimstone, a mythical artifact obscured by the shadows of history and religious folklore…an object of immeasurable value…if it’s real. The journey to find out could cost him more than his reputation and a leisurely retirement. He’ll have to battle dark magic on a perilous voyage to the hostile land where the Grimstone is reportedly hidden…a land very few sailors return from alive.

Starlina Murdoch, Zale’s estranged daughter, wants nothing to do with the sea. But Jensen, the boy she loves, is a member of her father’s crew and determined to make a career as a sailor. As she becomes unexpectedly entangled with her father’s voyage, she must find her bearings amongst the crew and decide for herself where her dreams truly lead.

Join Zale, Starlina, and the rest of the crew on an epic adventure of daring, danger, and magic! This is just the first installment of the “Heroes of Time” series, and you won’t want to miss the rest!

The Heroes of Time series

Are these books for teens or adults?

The Heroes of Time series is full of action and adventure, and is recommended for ages 12 and up. While it's categorized as "Young Adult," we recognize that this label can be a bit nebulous, so it bears further clarification. If the Heroes of Time books were made into films, they would likely be rated PG to PG-13.

Expect comic-style, "Marvel"-level action with no explicit sexual content. Any scenes that might suggest mature themes are handled with discretion, quickly fading to black without lingering on them.

Wholesome, quick read
I loved the story and significance of family wrapped in it. Quick read and fast paced with action, adventure, turmoil and triumph. I love how it ended. I think it's definitely a fantasy unlike many of the ones I have read in that it feels very much like the target audience is children or just a very conservative style of writing. If I chose one word to describe the book and story it would be "wholesome." Great one to read to your kids or with them. You’ll definitely have to help them with some words as there are many “out-there” names of items, times, and places as you’ll find in any fantasy novel. I will definitely read this and any upcoming novels with my son!

If you're looking for a fun adventure yarn, look no further than "Murdoch's Choice!"

If sailing ships, sea battles, sword fights, magic, and mystery are your thing, you'll love the story and characters in store for you in this quick (but substantial!) read.

You will probably find it hard to pick a favorite character -- I know I did. Most of them have hilarious nicknames ("Wigglebelly" has to be the winner on that front).

I also appreciated the hints at what is sure to be a much larger world in future installments. I'm eager to see how the religious, political, and cultural elements play out. That being said, there is more than enough that we're given in this volume to make it satisfying by itself.

This feels something like . . . Guardians of the Galaxy by way of Pirates of the Caribbean. If you see that red panda on the back cover and are tempted to wonder if he's basically Rocket, fear not. The character is entertainingly original and will make you laugh.

Murdoch's Choice has a little bit of everything in it and was a delightful read. Congratulations to the author on an auspicious debut -- here's to much more down the road!

Murdoch is a mighty captain, but has been given a challenge that could put him and his crew in grave danger. Worse yet, that challenge was also given to a rival captain who doesn’t always play fair. As luck would have it (or not) his estranged daughter ends up aboard his ship as they narrowly escape the harbor that is being consumed by a mysterious purple freezing fire.
The crew also includes a healer/chaplain who carries a dagger that can combat the mysterious fire (and other things). Along the way they encounter grimkin (fighting birds) and other foes, as well as a friendly red panda anthropod. The panda, aptly nicknamed Boomer, is a great help to Murdoch and the crew.
Murdoch will need to make many choices during this adventure, including wealth vs family.
I’m looking forward to reading the second book, Murdoch’s Shadow.

Captain Zale Murdoch, owner of the merchant ship Queenie, accepts a challenge in order to achieve grandmaster status from the guild. He sails away after the famed magical Grimstone. But does this relic serve the Light or the Dark forces? Murdoch will have a difficult choice to make once he finds this coveted object. Along the way, he’ll learn more about his own heritage and what’s truly important to him. Starlina, his spoiled daughter, inadvertently finds herself aboard his ship. She’s a rather one-dimensional figure who doesn’t have much of a role. She comes across as a bit whiny until the end, when she pitches in with the crew. Nonetheless, the action and adventure on the high seas are exciting enough to keep your interest.
