Abuela says, “plátanos are love.”
I thought they were food.
But Abuela says they feed us in more ways than one.
With every pop of the tostones, mash of the mangú, and sizzle of the maduros, a little girl learns that plátanos are her history, they are her culture, and—most importantly—they are love.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Cooking plantains with Abuela, young Esme grows to appreciate her family lineage in this intergenerationally focused first-person tale . . . Rahman’s digital illustrations use bright, warm colors for contemporary spreads and desaturated greens and browns to delineate scenes occurring in the past, contributing to a thoughtful story of legacy." -- Publishers Weekly
"Text that incorporates unitalicized Spanish throughout and warm and inviting illustrations convey affection for both food and family and will leave readers hungry for plátanos.…A cozy story for the stomach and the soul." -- Kirkus Reviews
About the Author
Mariyah Rahman was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. She spent her earliest years climbing trees, digging for fossils, and drawing on walls with crayons. Today, she is an illustrator for children’s books and entertainment but has still never found a fossil.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2024I read this book to my second and third grade students and they really liked it. Even younger students would love having the story read to them, but the text is for 7-9 years old readers. The book is in both English and Spanish. The story is meaningful and the illustrations are lovely!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2023“Platanos Are Love” is extremely heartwarming, and delightful. Its illustrations contribute to our connection with the characters and vividly bring the story to life. It’s about a young child who discovers the lineage to her heritage through food and special cultural traditions in a refreshing fun way. Many people can actually relate to this story as this at least is the one thing we all have in common within our own families.
It really is such a remarkable, touching, and thoughtfully written and illustrated book. All of my students wanted their very own copy to take home and share with their families.
✨I highly recommend having this book in your personal or school library! Your children will LOVE it & THANK you!!!!

Images in this review - Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2023Plátanos are Love is a warm, inviting, and wonderful story full of cultura. From start to finish this sweet book displays the positive aspects of community, tradition, and intergenerational love that exists in latino households. It’s a loving exploration of identity and how it is shaped by the stories we share through food and the members of our family that came before us. The bond that abuela shares with the two girls is very representative of the strength and support that exists in women lead households.
The illustrations are stunning and every page feels like it was crafted with so much thought. The meticulous nature of this book assures that each time you read it you can come across something new. A particular favorite of mine is the recipes you can find inside to try with your family.
An absolute must read and a great addition to your bookshelf! Plátanos are Love is an homage to the connection that exists between identity, family, and the sense of connection we all share to our ancestors. It truly is filled with love and 100% worth the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2023Familia, Food, and Lots of Love are powerful beacons in Alyssa Reynoso-Morris’ book, Plátanos Are Love.
Esme goes shopping en el mercado with Abuela. They purchase plátanos, and Esme is transformed by the knowledge her Abuela imparts on her.
“Plátanos feed us in more ways than one,” says Abuela, and page my page we learn of the legacy of the plátanos.
Esme’s ancestors planted and cultivated the crop, they picked and cooked them, they passed down recipes en secreto, and they passed down their love and resilience to their future generations.
They cooked mangu, tostones, and maduros. And now abuela shares those recipes with her grand daughters, and with it love, history, and culture for years to come.
The illustrations by Marita Rahman are captivating and engulf you into Esme’s world, her thoughts, and her experiences. I particularly liked the wordless spread that keeps you wondering and thinking of what will come next. It’s a beautiful surprise for Abuela.
I was mesmerized by the weaving of history and storytelling that came across this beautiful story. And I was reminded that we are our ancestors’ wildest dreams come true. They overcame oppression and colonialism, and they nurtured us with love, resiliency, and grit. And now we flourish from their sacrifices.
For many Latinx, food is our love language. Aromas, recipes, and flavors can transport us “home” with our family, or bring back a memory of a loved one. And passing down those traditions to the next generation honors our ancestors, our history, and our culture.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2023"Platanos is Love" is a captivating children's book that celebrates the importance of family and Dominican culture. The author does a remarkable job of weaving in the beauty and deliciousness of platanos, a staple food in many cultures. One of my son's favorite lines from the book was about frying the tostones until they resemble sunflowers, and it reminded him of his mom's favorite flower. It brought a smile to both of our faces and every time we see sunflowers, we are reminded of this heartwarming story. The illustrations are also captivating, bringing the story to life and immersing readers in the rich culture of platanos. This book is a legacy that celebrates traditions rooted in family love.
