How to engage in productive conversations with those who challenge your Christian convictions.

Gregory Koukl's best-selling book of practical apologetics, Tactics, wrote the game plan for discussing your Christian convictions with skeptics. In this follow-up, Koukl—a leader of clear-thinking Christianity—reveals the fundamental flaws in common, current challenges to Christian beliefs and values and provides step-by-step strategies to question and reveal those shortcomings.

Street Smarts offers model questions and sample dialogues to help guide believers in persuasive conversations about hot-button issues like:

  • Relativism
  • The trustworthiness of Scripture
  • The claims of the Gospel
  • Abortion
  • Marriage, sex, and gender

This book will teach you how to tackle those discussions that believers often avoid because they feel out of their element, vulnerable, or exposed. Lucid, well-organized, and easy-to-follow, Street Smarts provides a specific set of questions—the same questions Koukl uses in his own encounters—that are embedded in sample mini-dialogues that you can use to have fruitful debates with non-believers.

Gregory Koukl is the founder and president of Stand to Reason (www.str.org). Greg started out thinking he was too smart to become a Christian and ended up giving his life for the defense of Christianity. A central theme of Greg's speaking and writing is that the Christian view of reality can compete in the marketplace of ideas when it's properly understood and properly articulated.

Koukl's teaching has been featured on Focus on the Family radio, he's been interviewed for the BBC, and did a one-hour national television debate with Deepak Chopra on Lee Strobel's "Faith Under Fire." Greg has been quoted in U.S. News & World Report, The Philadelphia Inquirer, and the L.A. Times. An award-winning writer, Greg is author of "The Story of Reality: How the World Began, How It Ends, and Everything Important that Happens in Between," "Tactics: A Game Plan for Discussing Your Christian Convictions," "Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air" (with Francis J. Beckwith), and "Precious Unborn Human Persons." Koukl has spoken on 85 university and college campuses both in the U.S. and abroad.

Koukl received his Masters in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics at Talbot School of Theology, graduating with high honors, and his Masters with honors in Christian Apologetics from Simon Greenleaf University. He is an adjunct professor in the graduate program of Christian apologetics at Biola University.

Koukl hosts Stand to Reason's talk show advocating clear-thinking Christianity and defending the Christian worldview. Find more of Greg Koukl's resources at www.str.org.

Creates a Much-Needed Bridge from Seat Work to Feet Work
5 out of 5 stars
Creates a Much-Needed Bridge from Seat Work to Feet Work
Many Christians want to do their part to help non-Christians consider the case for Jesus and Christianity but they spend too much time doing "Seat Work" (listening to sermons; listening to teachings on how to engage people; taking notes; listening to podcasts; taking some more notes; listening to lectures; taking some more notes) without the important corollary of "Feet Work" (learning by doing; engaging those who disagree in conversations; starting the conversation). What these Christians need is a bridge from the important things they begin to learn in "Seat Work" to using those things in "Feet Work" conversations. They need leaders who emphasize the "how to" of starting conversations and what to say once you're there. With this new offering, Greg Koukl does a beautiful job of beginning to create that necessary bridge. With characteristic emphasis on only the most important issues for mere Christians across the denominational spectrum, he gives sample dialogues we can practice in order to begin to feel more comfortable engaging people in conversation. This is an essential activity for most Christians I've trained. They need to role-play sample conversations in order to take the step of creating real conversations.Check out, for example, pages 154-155 (image) which features a Christian attempting to explain the Trinity to a person who thinks it doesn’t make sense. Greg shows the reader exactly the analogy and phrases he might use so that the reader can then practice the dialogue to become conversant in both the ideas and the manner. The goal then is for the reader to start putting these concepts and phrases “in her own words” so that God can use her unique personality to reach the people in her sphere of influence. Greg is clear in the book that these sample dialogues are compressed for space, so readers should not expect the sample dialogues to encapsulate full conversations “word for word.” Rather the reader should use each of Greg’s sample dialogues as a gentle but firm nudge to start a conversation and start working out precisely what to say in the context of real conversation. This book picks up where Tactics left off, but Greg gives a helpful recap on Tactics in the first four chapters so this book can function as a stand-alone for your church, small group, or family devotions. (I also highly recommend Tactics and Story of Reality, both available at Amazon.)I think the most important thing to note about Greg, though, is that he is serious about representing Christ and the Christian worldview with what he calls the “character of an ambassador.” Qualities such as being patient, fair, honest, humble, clear, dependent, ready, and attractive -- he models these qualities throughout the book in a way that will help you start to assimilate what is better “caught than taught.”This book is a gem. You won’t regret taking Greg up on his invitation to allow him through this book to come alongside you as a mentor. He’s an able guide who will help you start to turn the “Seat Work” you’ve been doing all these years into “Feet Work” in which you start sharing the hope that is within you with gentleness and respect.[Note: I currently serve as the Executive Director of Justice For All, where we'll be using this book to train our staff, and I had the privilege of serving with Greg at Stand to Reason for seven years, so I'm not a neutral reviewer. I received an advance copy of the book from the publisher.]

Street Smarts by Greg Koukl is a practical and applicable guide for Christians navigating tough conversations about their faith. A follow-up to his bestseller Tactics, this book highlights the flaws in common objections to Christianity and offers strategies to address them through model questions and sample dialogues. Koukl emphasizes the difference between “gardening” (sowing seeds of thought) and “harvesting” (reaping conversions) in evangelism, focusing on how to have meaningful, non-confrontational discussions with non-believers. Each chapter tackles specific challenges Christians face, showing how to expose the weaknesses in opposing arguments while maintaining a genial tone. With clear instructions and user-friendly tools, Street Smarts equips readers to confidently defend their beliefs and engage in thoughtful, persuasive conversations.

Koukl has a great writing style, making this book accessible to anyone. He uses clear logic and does a good job anticipating objections to the points he is making. He has a passion about training others to have courage in their Christian worldview, as it is the best explanation for the way reality is. I highly recommend this book to anyone who desires to have conversations with others about controversial topics but do not have the courage to engage. Great sequel to Tactics. Blessings to Mr. Koukl and the staff at STR!
