The Delco Years Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 17 ratings

Bill Owens has written an irreverent, funny novel about a pandemic mitigated by drinking unpasteurized beer. The Delco Years is the story of how a community of craft beer drinkers flourish and survive after a dystopian event. Hunting and gathering would be at Costco, Target, Home Depot, and CVS. Eventually, they would barter wine for salt, sugar, flour, and hay to feed the horses and cows. From the unhappy Bobby releasing the pandemic to the world in revenge for the televangelists' sins to the various members of the Craft Beer community who thrive in Livermore Valley and beyond, The Delco Years is a darkly whimsical romp.

Having been a fan of underground comix many years ago, I hadn’t followed the subsequent “zines” that replaced them a decade or so later. In fact, the concept of a graphic novel was new to me and I’ve only read one a long time ago. As soon as I opened my copy of Delco Years, the graphics pulled me in and then the narrative kept my attention. As much of an optimist as I want to be, and have never been a fan of “Dystopia” per se, this story was truly riveting. Thanks Bill Owens, for keeping it real.

The Delco Years is a zany, fun-filled graphic novel. Bill Owens has an original mind, capable of the fine observation seen in his Suburbia photographs. Enjoy!

This is a great book. The story is entertaining and off-beat throughout and the illustrations are great. I encourage you to read it!

Reading the Delco Years is an escape into the fertile mind of Bill Owens. His imagination is a boundless journey on a whirlwind ride of chuckles with illustrations to guide you along the way.

I've heard Bill is working on his memoir Maybe we will get a glimpse into the formative years that produced a renowned photographer, brewmaster and author of this dystopian saga.

I originally knew of the author Bill Owens via the world of distilling & craft brewing, then I found out he was a renowned photog and became a fan of those seminal works, so when I heard that he'd written his first novel at the strapping young age of 83 I def wanted to check it out. Owens creates a world where a bumbling young man aspiring to be an evangelical preacher gets frustrated with finances & his libido and embarks on a quest to bring on the Rapture. To this end he travels to Russia where he finds the woman of his fantasies and navigates the dark web to procure anthrax. In the decayed milieu of post-Soviet Russia he ends up with an extremely virulent pathogen instead when his contact fumbles the job. Sans throwing in any spoilers, it's safe to say Owens has a blast describing in graphic detail myriad ways popular culture figures experience death by this quick acting virus. That is, all who weren't imbibers of craft beer, who are protected by a strain of yeast therein.

Owens' writing is to the point and personable... it's as if you're hearing a story relayed firsthand. The book is rife with colorful illustrations that bring a chuckle as you read through this farfetched (or is it?) imaginative tale. I'd recommend it as a book to take on a plane, or if you want a quick entertaining read.

Another Bill Owens original. Bill's latest book is ... very Bill! Irreverance, beer, graphic novel all in one. Love it!
