"Because of the Hate" is the true story about the murder of Jerry Bailey, a beloved high school football coach in Oklahoma. In 1976, Jerry Bailey had resigned as the Sapulpa High School head football coach but was murdered by his assistant Paul Reagor Jr. The book goes into detail about the day the coaches went missing, the murder, the trial and the fall out from it. Five years removed from winning a state championship in Nowata, Jerry Bailey had ended his run as the head coach at Sapulpa and was ready to move on to another high school and another football team. However, Bailey and his assistant, Reagor, left school on a January morning and never returned. An exhaustive search eventually found both coaches the next day but only one was still alive. Reagor was found inside of an abandoned farmhouse several towns away from Sapulpa and Bailey was dead inside of the truck of Reagor's car. Why did Reagor kill Bailey? Why did they leave the school that day? The town of Sapulpa has never really discussed the murder out of respect for Bailey's wife and children. It left nothing but rumor, speculation and questions, but now, over 40 years later, every question can be answered.

I live in Sapulpa today. I didn’t know anything about this story but I enjoyed the book. C So sad. So many lives affected because of misinformation from the people involved in the hiring process at Sapulpa schools.

I was a student of Jerry Bailey, graduating in 1974. I joined the Army and was out of country in 1976. I found out about the event in the stars and stripes. The book is well written and answers a lot of question for me. Coach Bailey was a good man who inspired a generation. The question "why" can not be answered.

The author was very concise in their style. For me being from the area and knowing some of the individuals, had me feeling like a stranger in my home town. The story is compelling due to the intense examination of the historical findings. Being a true story, the author did an excellent job at keeping the story interesting.
This book is for all readers and will leave one feeling its hard to believe it is a true happening. This should be on the History Channel!

This would be a good book if you lived in Oklahoma and followed high school football back in the day.. The author spends 2 chapters discussing Oklahoma high school football teams from the 70's, which is nothing a casual reader would be interested in. As a true crime book, it is just OK. Since the killer is revealed early in the book, it becomes much less of a "whodunit," and more of a "why did he do it?" Unfortunately the author never gets around to dealing much with that issue, which is a major drawback. The book is often repetitive and could do with better editing. No pictures, either

Personal Experience. I need to talk to this author! I played under, and had Paul Reagor Jr as a Coach at Okmulgee, OK. I can tell you much about this man that was an accident waiting to happen, from as early as 1971. He was crazy, mean, and a racist...a divider, not a solution man. He insulted white players. I would have been All-State, and quit football forever, because of this man.

This book was very badly written and it could have been so good. What a disappointment. There was NO research into the why this event occurred or the impact into the families who suffered. I thought it was racist in that NO concern, consideration or caring was exhibited toward the killers family. Just very bad.

Very good read. A page turner. I read it in 2 days. Tried to make it last longer, but there were chapters I could not stop reading. I had heard stories about the case, but never knew the whole story until I read the book.
