By Her Grace: A Dell Chronicles Novella (The Dell Chronicles) Kindle Edition
Halfling chef Paisley Dell lives in Aspenwood, a small town at the meeting of two major trade roads. The Dells own the Rosebud Inn and are pillars of the halfling community.
Paisley is happy, but… something is missing. She feels unfulfilled and restless. On her Becoming Day, she meets a mysterious young human, pregnant and on the run, and through her Paisley glimpses a world she desperately wishes she could know. A world of spice, elves, and exotic, faraway places.
With every recipe Prilani teaches her, Paisley’s desire to save her new friend from her pursuer grows, too. Protecting Prilani means facing an evil she has never known. Is the risk worth it?

About the author
HL Bernabe loves storytelling. The first story she ever wrote was when she was seven years old. 'Twas a tale of horror and woe; a nine foot tall stick of celery followed her home and tried to eat her.
That love of storytelling led her to a filmmaking degree with an emphasis on screenwriting. And she has been GM-ing tabletop RPGs for over 20 years.
When the pandemic forced everyone to quarantine, she took advantage of all the extra time she had and put it toward writing. Over the course of 16 months, HL wrote three books in the fantasy epic The Dell Chronicles. Currently, she lives and works in Central Oregon and is learning the book publishing biz while she finishes her series.

For every reader there comes a moment, not nearly often enough, when they realize they’ve discovered a true gem hidden amongst the dross. By Her Grace is just such a work. The pacing is perfect, the writing transparent, with each character skillfully drawn, and set in a world that feels so real it practically jumps off the page.
There are halflings and humans, orcs and elves, all the tropes of contemporary fantasy, but in H.L. Bernabe’s hands they inhabit fresh territory, tell a modern tale. Will our heroine settle for a staid existence, with each day much as the last, or will she answer the call of the wild and carve out her destiny? Let’s hope Bernabe follows her own path and continues such fine work. Voices like hers should be celebrated, and shared with a world of readers.
The author has a light touch in dealing with diversity (humans and halflings) and pregnancy out of wedlock. Good book for teenagers.
This prequel novella acquaints us with a halfling named Paisley and sets the stage for the hero’s journey coming in Book 1. It’s a great little backstory. Paisley could easily stay home and lead a simple yet successful life among her people, but deep down, she realizes she’d be unfulfilled. A new and troubled friend, Prilani, gives Paisley the kick in the pants that she needs to step out of her comfort zone and pursue her dreams.
I really enjoyed getting to know the characters and the microcosm of a bigger world. The market descriptions and cooking lessons really put me into the story in a sensory way. I liked the dialogue; realistic, sweet, and frequently witty and sarcastic. I’m eager to follow Paisley on her adventures in the upcoming book.
Good for readers of epic fantasy/sword and sorcery type books, but with a female focus (read: this is the sort of woman character who would wear fully functional armor rather than a chain mail bikini). Less gritty, more cozy. Lots of mouthwatering food descriptions! Think along the lines of Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree

Things take an intriguing turn on Paisley's Becoming Day when she meets Prilani, a mysterious young human seeking refuge. Through Prilani, Paisley glimpses a world of spice, elves, and distant lands, igniting a longing within her. The novella beautifully captures Paisley's internal struggle and her yearning for something more.
At its core, the story revolves around the bond between Paisley and Prilani. As Paisley learns Prilani's recipes, their connection deepens, and a desire to protect her friend from an impending threat unfolds. The author skillfully blends Paisley's culinary passion with the suspense of facing an unknown evil.
"By Her Grace" prompts readers to consider whether the risks Paisley takes to safeguard Prilani are worth the journey. The novella's charm lies not only in its fantasy elements but also in the relatable themes of self-discovery and the pursuit of fulfillment.
In essence, "By Her Grace" is a captivating novella that invites you to savor the flavors of Aspenwood, experience Paisley's emotional journey, and reflect on the profound question of whether the pursuit of the unknown is worth the risk.
